Breaking the Stereotype
Aug 31st 2012, 11:02

Many "minority" groups have long complained about being judged solely on their appearance. People of these groups are automatically stereotyped into a class of certain expectations. The body art community is no exception. From schools to the work force to every day life, people with body art are generally perceived as rebellious, irresponsible, unintelligent and sometimes even criminal.

This kind of prejudice is no more acceptable than judging a person based on the color of their skin, their religion, or their gender. However, it does happen and those with body art are inspected under a close microscope of scrutiny. How we, as members of this community, react to the scrutiny is what will make the difference.

Gaining Trust
We learn from childhood that trust is something that must be earned. We were also taught that losing someone's trust is much easier than gaining it. Tattooed and pierced gang members and criminals have caused the general population to lose much of its trust for the illustrated people. It is also no surprise that humans tend to be wary of anything that is different from what they are accustomed to.

We are quick to admonish that these people need to change their attitudes, but we need to realize that we are responsible for bringing about this change. A child does not overcome their fear of dogs by being thrust into a cage of angry canines.

Cut the Attitude
I hear myself saying this to my kids a lot. "Cut the attitude." What does it mean? It means get the scowl off your face and stop acting like you're the most important person in the world. No wonder "mundanes" ("blanks" - people without bodyart) are afraid of us - if you walk around looking, acting and talking like a punk, you're going to be perceived as a punk.

We all know you're pierced and tattooed as a form of your self-expression. That doesn't mean you have to be angry at the world. There is obviously a side of you that appreciates creativity and art; nurture that side and stop always being on the defensive. Don't assume every person you meet is going to judge you, and don't assume you're better than them if they do.

Above & Beyond
Maybe you're not the angry type that walks around with a chip on your shoulder, but do you go out of your way to break the stereotype? This is something I personally am conscious of every day, especially when my body art is clearly visible. One time I moved a shopping cart out of the way of a lady that was trying to park her car. Another time I held a door open for an elderly man with a walker. Recently I returned a wallet that was left behind by the owner. These are not extraordinary things, but the look of pleasant surprise on the faces of these individuals proves to me that it made an impression. I did exactly the opposite of what was expected of me, and I earned a point of respect for the body art community.

The Power of a Smile
The simplest thing you can do everywhere you go and to everyone you meet is share a smile. It's really contagious - if you give someone a genuine smile, they are going to smile back. Dogs that walk around with their tails wagging and their tongues hanging out aren't scary. And a person walking around with a big smile on their face isn't going to pose any threat to strangers.

Random Acts of Kindness
There used to be a television show where the hosts would go out to commit "random acts of senseless kindness". They would go out of their way to help someone or just make them smile. For someone who is not outgoing in nature, this isn't easy, but the benefits to yourself and the people you reach will be immeasurable.

I would like for everyone that reads this article to try to go out of their way for just one individual this week, and remember to do it with a smile! Then, email me about it at tattoo.guide@about.com. What did you do? What was their reaction? How did it make you feel? Do you think this could help change the world's perspective on body art, and would you do it again? Your experiences and reactions will be published in a future article for all to read. Good luck!

Top 5 Animal Tattoo Designs
Aug 29th 2012, 11:02

From pet memorial portrait tattoos to old school wild cat and sparrow designs, the following top 5 animal tattoo designs lead the pack for wild inspiration.

There are many reasons people choose to tattoo animal designs. Whether to depict legend and myth, honor sacred pets or to embrace zodiac and astrology symbols, animals have universal lure.

Before you tattoo your favorite beast, take a look at some of the more common meanings and associations of the top 5 animal tattoo designs and avoid any danger ahead.

1. Cats

Image CC Miss Pupik@Flickr

Go ahead and call her fancy. She's picky and knows exactly what she wants and will turn up her nose to almost anything unsatisfactory. Sound like you? Meow, a cat tattoo may be the perfect top 5 animal tattoo design for you. Cats have a mysterious and playful disposition but they also harbor a dark side and association with the other worlds. From black cats to old school tiger tattoos, if only the best will do, you might want a feline design.

2. Dogs

Image CC Lucy Boynton @ Flickr

He's loyal alright and this tattoo is going to be there for life, so go ahead and pay ode to man's best friend in a tribute dog tattoo piece. Dog tattoos include wolves and coyotes so feel free to pair up a wild beast with a dreamcatcher for Southwestern inspiration or opt for a simple dog sihlouette of your beloved. Black and grey portraits make for realistic and memorable dog tattoos.

3. Fish

Image CC Sabotrax @ Flickr

Japanese koi fish tattoos are the fastest swimmers in the fish tattoo category and it's no wonder why. Beautiful koi are believed to be brave much like Samurai facing the sword. Koi can swim up waterfalls and will await the chopping block without so much as a quiver. For men, the koi is a strong and masculine tattoo design. Other fish tattoos include the seahorse, which is happily portrayed as erect and entirely present, or salmon, which are widely celebrated in the Celtic culture for being wise. For the fierce, bring on the gore with a shark tattoo, just be ready to scare off a few people from time to time.

4. Snakes

Image CC The Guy Who's Going Places @ Flickr

While Snakes have an ever-changing reputation and will always be linked to temptation and sinister traits, don't let these negative connotations stop you from inking a serpent design if your heart desires. Snakes can also signify rebirth, renewal and change thanks to the shedding of their own skin. They're also very wise and are said to bear secret knowledge. Celebrated in many cultures and sacred to Native American tribes, consider a tribal or Celtic snake tattoo for hidden meaning or a coiled design for something realistic and traditional.

5. Birds

Bird tattoos can symbolize many different things. From flight and freedom to the beauty and fragility of life, birds are a nature's pick for one of the top 5 animal tattoo designs. Hummingbirds make for pretty shoulder and hip tattoos while owls are a wise choice for a masculine back piece, arm or leg sleeve. Add a few branches and get inspired by a tree tattoo and give your bird something to chirp about.

The Dangers of Black Henna
Aug 28th 2012, 11:15

A black henna tattoo may seem benign compared to a real tattoo. For those wanting the look of a tattoo without the permanence, a henna “tattoo” is a great way to enjoy temporary body art. Henna paste is applied to the skin in the pattern of your choice, and slowly leaves behind a stain as the paste dries. That stain lasts from 2-4 weeks and gradually fades and disappears over that time period. But black henna actually isn't henna at all, and can leave lasting damage to your skin.

What is REAL Henna?
Henna paste is made from a natural substance derived from a small shrub called Lawsonia Intermis. The plant is crushed into a powder that is used to make the paste. In its natural state, there is nothing in henna powder that can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Sometimes, the ingredients that are added to the powder to create the paste â€" such as eucalyptus oil â€" could possibly serve as an irritant to those with sensitive skin, but that is very rare. Natural henna paste leaves behind a stain on the skin that is a burnt orange or brown color.

What is Black Henna?
A lot of people don’t like the natural color stain created by henna, maybe because the color itself gives away the fact that the “tattoo” is not real. Or maybe they simply don’t like the color. So, they seek out henna art that offers a black color, which looks more like real tattoo ink. Black henna, however, contains an additive that is extremely dangerous. It’s called paraphenylenediamine, or PPD for short. PPD is a chemical that contains a compound that is derived from phenylenediamine, which is a toxic substance. PPD is clear until it is infused with oxygen. The partial oxidization is what seems to cause severe allergic reactions in some people.

Black henna is not â€" and never was â€" intended for use as tattoo dye. Actually, it's hair dye. It's not meant to come in contact with skin for long periods of time and even the hair dye can be dangerous to those with an allergy to PPD. The problem is that most people don’t know if they're allergic to it until they have already received lasting damage from a reaction.

Black Henna Horror Stories
In January of 2007, two families filed a lawsuit against a distributor of black henna after their children were scarred after receiving black henna tattoos while on holiday. The PPD burned and blistered their skin so badly that the children have been permanently scarred. So, don’t assume that black henna must be safe just because the tattoos are offered to children.

Some companies also sell henna in a rainbow of colors such as red, green and blue. While these henna pastes pose no danger due to the mild color additives, it should be noted that they are still a waste of money. The henna only retains the color while the paste is on the skin. Once the paste has been removed, the stain left behind will still be the orange/brown shade you would get from natural henna.

Henna art is meant to be what it is â€" a beautiful, natural, temporary stain. If you want a henna tattoo, appreciate it for its beautiful, earthy colors. If you want a tattoo that looks real â€" get a real one!

Ear Lobe Piercings
Aug 28th 2012, 11:02

Definition: Ear lobe piercings are obviously the grandfather of all body piercings. They can be traced back to ancient civilizations and have a vast history. The lobe is the easiest place on the body to pierce and has the highest success rate when it's done properly. It heals well, and can be adorned with many different styles of jewelry. Lobe piercings can also be stretched, an ancient practice that continues to have great influence in modern society.

Unfortunately, the invention of the piercing gun has made modern ear piercings even more risky than tribal ritual piercings done hundreds of years ago. No piercing, including the earlobe, should be done with a gun or squeeze trigger piercing apparatus. Please avoid department store and mall kiosk piercing stations - the people there are not trained on proper sterilization methods and everything about gun piercings is the exact opposite of how a piercing should be executed and treated. For more information, read Piercing Gun vs. the Needle.

Recommended Starter Jewelry: You've got plenty of jewelry options for a lobe piercing - CBRs and circular barbells come in a wide range of styles, colors, and sizes. I don't recommend anything smaller than 16 gauge for a lobe piercing, and even if you want to stretch to a larger size eventually, your first piercing shouldn't be any larger than 12 gauge.

The earlobe heals pretty well, but exposure to bacteria is high risk so proper cleansing is essential. Earphones, telephones, pillows, makeup, and hairspray are just a few sources of bacteria and irritants that can make healing any ear piercing more difficult. Initial healing, allowing for jewelry change, takes about 6-8 weeks. That doesn't mean it's completely healed inside and out, though, so you can't stretch your lobe that quickly.

If you're interested in more information on stretching a lobe piercing, please read How to Safely Stretch a Piercing.

A lobe orbital is two lobe piercings connected with one CBR loop, so the jewelry looks as if it "orbits" the ear, like Saturn's rings.

Butterfly Tattoos
Aug 28th 2012, 11:02

Butterfly tattoos have a spiritual and uplifting feel about them. Celebrating metamorphosis and change, a butterfly tattoo makes a sexy design for girls but can also be fit for a men if its done in the right spot and style.

There are many species of butterflies fluttering about, whether you fancy the idea of filling the wings in a more fantastical spectrum or opt for a realistic depiction of a winged species, coloring or lack thereof will be the first consideration in your butterfly tattoo piece.

For starters there are 6 families of butterflies. They are the Swallowtails, Brush-footed,Whites and Sulphurs, Gossamer- winged, Metalmark and lastly the Skippers. The most common butterflies most people are familiar with are the Swallowtails and the Monarchs that fall within the Brush-footed butterfly family.

Encyclopedias offer vast amounts of knowledge that can help you begin discovering th butterfly type and style you're after. Give this process some time as the wing shapes and sizes and even colors offer much variation in the butterfly's style.

Black and Grey Tattoos

Dating back to the streets of LA in the 1970s, single-needle tattooing done in a fine line style became the stamp of prison tattoos before it hit the streets in style thanks to the artistic efforts of tattoo artists Jack Rudy and Freddy Negrete.

Black and grey tattoos can be a very dramatic choice for a butterfly tattoo because of the variation of shading that will likely be used to create your piece. Rose tattoos done in a fine line black and grey style offer the best example of how a butterfly can look classic, elegant and even mystical.

If you're into lunar and moon tattoos, consider adding black and grey butterflies to create a dark star set scene.

Men can incorporate butterflies into many different masculine tattoo designs including tribal and even Celtic tattoos. You can even opt for a nature theme tattoo with sleeves that carry on with insects.

Greek Mythology and Butterflies

Greek mythology has many connections to butterflies. The Greek word for butterfly is "Psyche" and that is also the translation of the soul.

Cupid married Psyche on one lonely condition. He would visit her only at night and the dark. In these evenings they shares romantic passions that were heated and unbridled. Soon Psyche became fearful that the man in the dark may be unhandsome in real life.

Amongst the pushing of her sisters, Psyche decided to light a candle upon Cupid's face at night only to see the beautiful winged man that he was. Angrily awoken by the light, Cupid took off and broke Psyche's heart, never to return. A lantern and a butterfly could depict this same lore or a moonlight tattoo could offer a romantic translation of their love story; tragic as it is.

Butterflies and Evolution

On a lighter note, butterflies signify change and rebirth. Just as the butterfly begins life as a caterpillar and goes through a mysterious period of quiet transformation, the evolution springs upon a much more beautiful self.

If you've suffered significant loss or have parted with significant loves or people, a butterfly tattoo could help represent and affirm your change and help encourage a positive and brighter future.

Butterflies can be a playful and feminine tattoo and they can also offer much more dark and significant meaning. Whether it be to represent transformation and harmony or love and bliss, winged tattoos are proof that wherever a butterfly lands, beauty always follows.

Protective Gloves
Aug 27th 2012, 11:02

Standard medical latex gloves (or some other type of medical grade protective gloves) should always be used. Another point worth mentioning, though: Do the gloves fit properly? If the gloves are too big or too small, the artist runs the risk of either poking a hole in the gloves or tearing them. All it takes is a pinhole to run the risk of cross contamination.

Granted, this is more for the safety of the tattoo artist, but no one wants an infected tattoo artist working on them. If the tattooist doesn't care about their own safety, why would they care about yours?

Tombstone & Astrology Symbols
Aug 27th 2012, 11:02

Continuing our look at symbols and their meanings, this article will explore the symbolism behind cemetery tombs and gravestone symbols, Astrological signs and symbols of the Zodiac, and the meanings behind many popular flowers. As with the other pages in this series, each link will bring you to the best resources I have found online that illustrate and describe these symbols.

Cemetery Tombs/Gravestone Markings & Statues
I was actually surprised to find out that even gravestone etchings and statues have meanings behind them and are not just randomly selected. Although this may seem an odd set of symbols to include on a tattoo page, I thought many of these would also make beautiful memorial tattoos. When looking for something really special to honor a loved one that has passed on, these pages may prove highly inspirational.

Cemetery Symbols
Great pictorial examples of many statues and carvings. Click on the photo for a larger picture, or scroll down the page for the symbolic meanings.
Death and Symbolism
Most of these descriptions don't have pictures along with them, but they describe objects most of us would be familiar with anyway.
Tombstone Carvings, Symbols & Icons
Genealogy guide, Kimberly Powell, has even more links to different sources of tombstone symbolism.

Astrological/Zodiac Signs & Symbols Many of us believe that the stars and our place in them can actually describe or affect our personality, our mood and our future. These symbols also make popular tattoos, so it's good to have a clear understanding of what they mean.

Astrology and the Zodiac About's guide to Astrology, Molly Hall, has put together a helpful gallery/glossary of Zodiac glyphs, noting the common astrological symbols and their corresponding signs.
Sabian Symbols
Holistic Healing guide, Phylameana lila Desy, helps you find the best resources of all 360 degrees of the Zodiac.

Flower Symbolism Even flowers can sometimes have certain meanings behind them depending on type and even color. Of course, as pointed out in part one of this article, sometimes a rose is just a rose. However, if you'd like to dig into the deeper symbology of popular flowers and herbs, these sites will help you out.

The Lotus Flower
About's guide to Holistic Healing, Phylameana Desy, provides a wonderful database of links to explore the meaning of the lotus flower.
The Meaning of Flowers
Even flowers, plants and herbs can have their place in the world of symbolism. Did you know Aloe signifies wisdom and integrity? Or that a violet stands for modesty and simplicity? Find definitions and characteristics that accompany these many beauties.
The Meaning of Roses
Even more specific than flowers, this site divides roses by maturity and color, and shares the significance and symbolism behind them as individuals or combined with other colors.

Vampire Bites
Aug 27th 2012, 11:02

Definition: Vampire Bites are really just a strategically placed surface piercings. Since the rod that connects the two ends is invisible underneath the skin, the gems or discs on the surface of the skin simulate the appearance of fang bites in the skin. The piercing is placed in an area around the neck or shoulder that is the typical target area for a hungry vampire. Red jewel ends are usually the most popular choice, because they look like blood.

While they've always been done with surface bars in the past, with the invention of microdermal anchors, a Vampire Bite could easily be done with two microdermals instead. The end result is the same. If you have it done with a single bar, though, it's really important that the connecting rod is made of a flexible material or is an actual surface bar, not a barbell. This reduces the chance of migration and/or rejection, which is a standard risk with all surface piercings. Having a piercer that has a lot of experience with surface piercings is also important.

On a side note, while this is typically a piercing that girls get, there's no reason a guy can't get it, too. There's nothing "feminine" about being bitten by a vampire.

Tattoos / Body Piercings: What's Hot Now: Corset Piercings

Corset Piercings
Aug 26th 2012, 11:02

Definition: Corset piercings are exactly what they sounds like - two parallel rows of piercings that are connected with a string or ribbon in a criss-cross pattern, simulating the look of an actual corset. While it's typically done on the back, it can also be done on the arm, leg, or a variety of other locations on the body. How many piercings and how far apart they are is simply a matter of choice.

Due to their tendency to reject and the fact that healing multiple piercings at one time is rather stressful on the body, most people choose to wear corset piercings temporarily, for a special occasion or event such as a tattoo convention. After the event is over, they remove the piercings and allow the holes to heal up. Since they were only in the skin for a couple of days, there usually isn't too much scarring as a result and the corset can be pierced again some weeks or months down the line.

If, however, you wish to have a corset piercing that is permanent, the first rule of thumb is NOT to use CBR jewelry. The pressure on the skin that the rings create, especially through movement and possible pulling from the ribbon used to connect the rings, are not conducive to healing and will most certainly cause the rings to migrate and reject.

Instead, what is known as slave barbells or doorknockers should be used, which are barbells with a ring attached to either or both ball ends. That way, when the ribbon is threaded through the rings, the tension is on the barbell, not the rings, which gives the piercings a better chance at healing without migration and rejection. There is always a risk, but at least the odds are in your favor.

Corset piercings should only be done by a highly skilled surface piercer and the client should have a high pain threshold, because this is not an easy piercing process to sit through.

Healing will take a minimum of 12 weeks.

My Visit to L.A. Ink
Aug 25th 2012, 11:02

This was the tattoo Yede and her niece both got. It's very well done, but I shudder to think that the shop minimum is $200 so you know this small tattoo cost at least that much.

Needless to say, this was a disappointing visit. TV show or not, celebrity or not, when you run a business it should be handled professionally and potential clients should be treated with respect. If you are ever treated this way in any tattoo studio, walk away. There are other shops out there with better people. Never settle and never assume all tattoo artists have rock star egos. Don't give people more credit than they deserve just because they are on TV or have celebrity status. We're all just people.

Just a few miles away from L.A. Ink, we visited a fantastic shop with the warmest and most welcoming crew. Next week, you'll be able to read about them!

Definition: Helix piercings (also known as rim piercings) can be anywhere along the curled ridge on the outer edge of the upper ear cartilage. Even an Industrial is essentially a double piercing through the upper and lower helixes. Helix piercings, like all cartilage piercings, are a little more difficult to heal, but still a relatively simple procedure for an experienced piercing technician.

The Helix Orbital is a piercing that is placed from side to side rather than front to back. The procedure requires piercing two holes rather than one. If pierced with a CBR, the jewelry "orbits" the helix like rings around a planet.

The Anti-helix is like other "anti-" piercings in that it is located directly across from the original. In this case, it would be along the curled ridge on the inner edge of the ear, closest to your head.

The range of jewelry for a helix piercing is as diverse as the piercings themselves. There are so many different ways in which the helix can be pierced, either by itself or in conjunction with other locations. A standard Helix piercing, though, usually starts out with a CBR or a small circular barbell.

A good gauge size is usually 16-14 gauge, but it depends on the size of your rim. You want something small enough to fit inside the curled edge without putting any stress on the cartilage. It's best to let your piercer determine what size would be best.

Aug 25th 2012, 11:02

From dragons and Asian tattoos that are rich in heritage and culture, tattoos have a certain look and history about them that can place them into distinct categories.

While tribal and old school tattoos are some of the more popular forms, black and grey portraits tattoos are a timeless choice if you like fine details.

Refresh your art knowledge and find your true tattoo style and you'll be one step ahead in designing the perfect tattoo.

Fine line black and grey tattoos originated in the Chicano communities of East LA during the 1970s. The use of a single-needle created fine lines with smooth and subtle shading in varied shades of black and grey. Once infamous amongst prison mates, today these artsy sketches include roses, memorial and portrait pieces..

2. Biomechanical

For the hardcore sci-fi or industrial types, biomechanical tattoos are a tough choice. Paired with ripped apart flesh or robotic parts, these types of tattoos look best when placed on muscled parts of the body. Think of your legs, arms, or even a neck tattoo and then get inspired by fantastical machinery for a tattoo design. You may choose to draw the design yourself or shop around for a skilled biomechanical tattoo artist.

3. Asian

Loved throughout the world for their colorful and graceful beauty and designs, Asian tattoos include language symbols to full body art depictions of koi fish, cherry blossom tattoos and dragon and tiger tattoos. Geisha women are yet another popular tattoo design if you want to honor the pin-ups of the Eastern world.

4. Tribal

Depicting rich culture and meaning from Native American history, tribal tattoos became a very popular armband piece in the 1990s and lost much of their significance in the process. True tribal tattoos tattooing practices are often considered rites of passage and may involve monks, blessings, and more painful hand-poked tattooing methods. Rich in spiritual meaning, tribal tattoos mark one part of life to the next.

5. Traditional Old School

Traditional and old school tattoos are often used interchangeably and their designs include eagle tattoos, pin-up girls, ships and anchors. From memorial pieces to love and glory tattoos, one of the most popular artists that specialized in creating this type of tattoo style is Norman Keith Collins, also known as Sailor Jerry. You can read more about Sailor Jerry and explore the history of old school tattoos here.
