Tongue Piercing Experience With Pictures

Tongue and Tragus Photo Experiences
Part 1: Renee Gets her Tongue Pierced

After moving to a new state, I was really nervous about the idea of looking for a new piercer. I was really attached to my guy Steve in Dallas, Texas, so the idea of having to find someone new to trust with my skin was something I positively dreaded.

I had been wanting to get my tragus pierced for months. I had visited a few studios in Indianapolis and everyone seemed nice enough, but I was still hesitant. Well, they say that word of mouth is a very powerful tool of advertising, and I guess they're right. Here is how it all went down...

Renee talking with Billy before her piercing

Renee getting "clamped"

My friend Renee had been wanting to get her tongue pierced. She already knew exactly who she wanted to do it - her problem was getting up the guts to go through with it. She said this guy Billy at Metamorphosis (Indianapolis, Indiana) had pierced her husband's lobes a few months back and was just "the greatest". I told her I could provide her with the moral support and motivation to get her piercing if she could promise me that "her guy" was really good. She said absolutely, and we made our appointments together.

The day finally arrived and I was totally psyched. I met Renee at Metamorphosis and we filled out our paperwork. Billy was there to greet us and talk to us while we did all that, and I had to admit he seemed really cool! After we did all that, we went back to his work room (which by the way was decorated with some really cool statues and a soothing water fountain).

Ouch! The needle goes in...

Putting the barbell in and securing it

I expected to hop up on the table, get a little pep talk, do the piercing and be out of there. Uh-uh. Not with Billy. Renee was up first for her piercing. The "little pep talk" was a full 15 minutes. Billy took the time to explain absolutely everything Renee should expect with her piercing - what problems she might encounter, how to deal with them, how to care for it, and of course a little chit-chat to keep things friendly and fun. During the piercing, Billy explained every little thing he was doing and why. He took his time to make sure the marks he made for the piercing were absolutely perfect and admitted he is a bit of a perfectionist (which we had no problem with!).

By the time he was ready to actually pierce her tongue, I am confident there is no way she had any unanswered questions. Her only fear remaining was how much it would hurt. That was answered in less than a second and she barely even flinched. She said it hurt, but it was nothing like she expected. It's now been just over a week and she's already talking and eating normal and getting used to her new addict...er, addition.

The finished product!

Happy Birthday Mary Shelley, writer of the novel Frankenstein. Today Mary would be 216 years old.

Mary began writing Frankenstein when she was just 19 years old. The first version was published in London in 1818 and was anonymously credited. It wasn't until the second print in 1823 that Shelley received due credit for her brilliant gothic novel. Do you have a Frankenstein or a Mad Scientist tattoo to share? Send it my way...tattoo@aboutguide.com, and provide a photo credit of course. I don't like things coming back to haunt me.

Earth Day Tattoos
Aug 30th 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

You can pay ode to the world with an Earth Day inspired tattoo. Whether you want to show some love for your planet or ink for environmental causes or awareness, the following design ideas can all pay respect to the universe. From a happy and spirited circle of sunflowers to a feather tattoo, all of these tattoo inspirations honor Mother Earth.

1. Planets

Planet and space scenes are a really neat choice for Earth Day tattoos. Not only can these designs be colorful, they can be cosmic as well. Imagine a back piece with a night sky complete with star tattoos. You can even incorporate astrological birth signs and constellations. Or opt for a traditional earth tattoo and add a phrase such as 'Save Our Planet.'

2. Flowers

Another Earth Day tattoo option is flowers. You can certainly opt for any sort of flower and pay tribute to Mother Nature's beautiful bounty, or you pick something a little more spirited. Common wildflowers include daisies, Bachelor's buttons, yarrow, Queen Anne's lace and happy sunflowers. Imagine a wildflower scene or a circlet of blooms around the quote from Henry David Thoreau, "All good things are wild and free."

3. Birds

From a pair of peace doves to a scene of birds in flight, an avian tattoo is another natural choice for a nature inspired tattoo. Wing and feather designs can take so many different forms. You can opt for a single red cardinal or a bird fleeing its' cage. Popular phrases may include 'Hope' or 'Believe.' Awesome birds include owls , Old School sparrows, Blackbirds and peace doves, in which case you should add an olive branch from the olive tree to represent a universal peace offering. Mourning Doves mate for life, making this avian pick a unique love and couple's tattoo idea as well.

4. Peace and Love

Peace symbol and heart tattoos can be appropriate Earth Day inspired designs. You can shape the earth into a heart, add a pair of wings and tattoo the word 'Mother', or create a peace symbol with a global vibe using blue and green ink. Map tattoos are another unique choice that take on a large presence. Consider a back piece and create a map of the world and add the phrase 'Love the Earth' or a quote such as "Not all those who wander are lost" from J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring.

5. Insects

Insects are the most diverse organisms on the planet. With over 900 thousand known species, insects are credited for aerating our soils, controlling pest population and pollinating the flowers that produce such beautiful blooms. From busy bees making honey to spiders spinning silk, even the caterpillar adds beauty to the world as it transitions to a butterfly. Researchers are just now using spider silks in addition to caterpillar silk to produce protein and eco-based materials for use in cosmetic, medical and textile applications. What a lovely way to honor earth and a sustainable future. For my Top 5 Insect Tattoo ideas and suggestions, read more here.

How to Design Your Own Tattoo
Aug 29th 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

Do you want to know how to design your own tattoo? A talented artist can make the craft look easy. Television shows like Miami Ink, Ink Master and L.A. Ink brought the world of custom tattoos up close and personal. Forget the tattoo flash.

Whether this is your first, last or some random tattoo number in the middle, make it count and make it custom with a design all of your own. Go ahead and get creative. You can do it.

Difficulty: Average

Time Required: N/A

Here's How:

  1. Location, location, location: Consider your body prime real estate. Location, visibility and discretion all play a key role (as should gravity) when determining a tattoo design. When you start planning your tattoo, explore your available body canvas and take these areas into consideration.

Do you want a tattoo that the entire world can see or just a select few? Semi-private location areas include the lower back, shoulders, stomach and neck, whereas high visibility locations include the face, arms, fingers and legs. Once you’ve determined your desired location you can begin planning the perfect tattoo piece. That’s the fun part.

  2. Get inspired: Even if you have a theme in mind, you should stay open to fresh ideas before getting inked. Tattoo magazines, art books, cultural symbols and botanical images all make for artful inspiration. Spend a day shuffling through library books for style ideas. Search magazines and periodicals for pictures that pique your interest. Take a journal and jot notes. In other words, do your homework.
  3. Stay true: Remember, no matter how cliché it sounds, a tattoo is permanent. Try not to opt for a trendy piece or style. Stay true to your hobbies, special interests and beliefs before you make a lifelong decision. Are you currently interested in a culture or practicing a new religion? Make sure you’ll have the same interests and beliefs down the road as a precautionary measure.

“Safe” tattoos often include zodiac symbols, floral tattoos and tribal styles that don’t pinpoint a particular time or trend in your life.

  4. Draw it yourself: If you have a creative hand, spend some time sketching and let the paper come alive. Perhaps a simple cross could benefit from your true-to-life rose drawings? A basic black tribal piece could be enhanced with a rainbow of color. Rather than opt for a traditional piece of old school tattoo flash, why not sketch your own?

Even if you lack an artistic side you can integrate your ideas into a piece. Start exploring images and consider colors. Piece some of your favorite tattoo styles together and imagine how it would best befit you. Journal your ideas and start putting them together.

  5. Choosing color: Do you dream in color? Before you go crazy over the color wheel be sure you can commit to ink touch-ups down the road, as they will likely be needed. While touch-ups certainly aren’t a necessity during the life of a tattoo, you may find a drab and old tattoo needs a color refresher. The more color you add now, the more you’ll need to add later. Maintenance is always a consideration.
  6. Black and white: Many people opt for solid black tattoos for good reason. Black is basic and looks clean. Black also serves as the prime shade for most tribal and cultural tattoo designs. If you like a single-color theme but would rather go pale, why not opt for a trendy white ink tattoo or glow in the dark ink? Colorless doesn’t have to mean boring.
  7. Find the right artist: Once you’ve created the perfect design it’s time to find the artist who can bring it to life. Don’t cheat here. Take your piece to several different shops for professional feedback. Meet all artists and check out their portfolios and ensure they’re licensed. He may choose to modify your design as he sees fit and you should welcome his expert suggestions. Most will offer free consultations by appointment, so get in the chair. Creativity awaits!

How to Discover Talented Tattoo Artists
Aug 29th 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

You can find a reputable tattoo artist several ways. Word of mouth (in other words, ask). Or you can take it upon yourself to do the dirty work. As in, the inspection of the shop and the portfolios.

Don't buy into the idea that the busiest or most well-known artist in your area is the best. Would you apply that same rule to your hairdresser, mechanic or nail technician? Of course not. So shop around and find the artist that's creative, trustworthy and most of all, clean.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: N/A

Here's How:

  1. Take a tour: Before you start calling around tattoo studios let your feet do the walking instead. There's no better way to get a feel for an artist than to pop right in. See what the artists are doing, who's available to chat, and most importantly decide if you like the atmosphere. You'll be spending quite some time there.

Next, is the place clean? See a license? Chairs look wiped off? Good. Now introduce yourself and get ready to plan the tattoo process.

  2. Start talking ideas: Here's your chance to interview an artist. Spill your thoughts. Lots of people have fears about tattoo artists as stereotypes have created a certain culture club associated with the craft. Tattooists are human. Don't be afraid to talk to them. Show them your body and let them listen to your ideas. See where it goes. Are they spilling back design suggestions? If yes, keep talking. Explore colors and go over flash or custom sketch options. If not, head out the door. This isn't the artist for you.
  3. Do a trial: Any reputable artist should be willing to create a few sample sketches and even let you test drive a temporary design. This is your body. Don't be in such a hurry. If it's not right, try again. There is no room for permanent errors. This is especially important to note if you're planning a name, cultural symbol or language tattoo.
  4. Get inked: Once you found the guy who has envisioned your tattoo just as you have, it's time to pick a date. Get to your appointment on time and sober. Make sure you have some cash for a tip. Your tattooist deserves it. He's worked hard. An extra twenty percent added to your bill will do.
  5. Spread the word: Celebrity tattooists rely on the same thing. Publicity. If you discovered hidden talent in your local area, spread the word. Fan page your artist on Facebook and social media sites, provide credit and post photographs.

You don't have to be part of a culture club to find a talented artist. You just have to be someone who appreciates a creative, trustworthy and most of all, clean tattooist. You know, just like your hairdresser. (And the chairs are more comfortable!)

The Meanings of Tattoo Symbols and Designs...
Aug 29th 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

Continuing our look at symbols and their meanings, this article will explore the symbolism behind cemetery tombs and gravestone symbols, Astrological signs and symbols of the Zodiac, and the meanings behind many popular flowers. As with the other pages in this series, each link will bring you to the best resources I have found online that illustrate and describe these symbols.

Cemetery Tombs/Gravestone Markings & Statues
I was actually surprised to find out that even gravestone etchings and statues have meanings behind them and are not just randomly selected. Although this may seem an odd set of symbols to include on a tattoo page, I thought many of these would also make beautiful memorial tattoos. When looking for something really special to honor a loved one that has passed on, these pages may prove highly inspirational.

  • Cemetery Symbols
Great photographic examples of many statues and carvings. Click on the photo for a larger picture, or scroll down the page for the symbolic meanings.
  • Tombstone Carvings, Symbols & Icons
Genealogy guide, Kimberly Powell, has even more links to different sources of tombstone symbolism.

Astrological/Zodiac Signs & Symbols
Many of us believe that the stars and our place in them can actually describe or affect our personality, our mood and our future. These symbols also make popular tattoos, so it's good to have a clear understanding of what they mean.

  • Astrological Symbols
About.com's Astrology guide has put together this excellent visual glossary to help you find the meanings of many astrological symbols.
  • Signs of the Zodiac
What do the stars mean to you? Find out with this handy chart that displays the different signs of the zodiac and what each one represents.
  • Sabian Symbols
Holistic Healing guide, Phylameana Desy, helps you find the best resources of all 360 degrees of the Zodiac.

Flower Symbolism
Even flowers can sometimes have certain meanings behind them depending on type and even color. Of course, as pointed out in part one of this article, sometimes a rose is just a rose. However, if you'd like to dig into the deeper symbology of popular flowers and herbs, these sites will help you out.

  • The Lotus Flower
About.com’s guide to Holistic Healing, Phylameana Desy, provides a wonderful database of links to explore the meaning of the lotus flower.
  • The Meaning of Flowers
Even flowers, plants and herbs can have their place in the world of symbolism. Did you know Aloe signifies wisdom and integrity? Or that a violet stands for modesty and simplicity? Find definitions and characteristics that accompany these many beauties.
  • The Meaning of Roses
Even more specific than flowers, this site divides roses by maturity and color, and shares the significance and symbolisms behind them as individuals or combined with other colors.

How To Care For a New Tattoo
Aug 28th 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

A beautifully done tattoo can be ruined simply by not caring for it properly. Follow these guidelines, and you will have a work of art you can be proud of.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: 1-2 Weeks

Here's How:

  1. Listen to your artists aftercare instructions. They know more about your specific needs.
  2. No matter how tempted you are to show off your new tattoo, leave the bandage on for at least 3 hours.
  3. Wash your tattoo with mild soap twice daily using only your hand.
  4. After washing your tattoo, pat it dry with an unused towel or paper towel.
  5. For the first 3 days, apply anti-bacterial ointment very lightly after washing.
  6. After the third day, you can start applying lotion to your tattoo after washing.
  7. If your tattoo itches, don't scratch it! Instead, slap it to make the itch go away.
  8. Your tattoo may start to peel. Don't pick at it! Let it peel by itself and apply lotion to keep it moist.
  9. Once it is healed, apply sunblock before spending an extended time outside.
  10. You may want to have it touched up every few years to keep it looking new and vibrant.

Tips:

  1. Do not, at any time, scrub your tattoo before it is fully healed.
  2. Your tattoo's worst enemy is the sun. Protect it with sunblock to keep the color from fading.
  3. A tattoo is considered completely healed when it is about 3 months old.

Tattoos Over 40 - First Time Ink Experiences...
Aug 28th 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

I was 53 when I got my first one and will celebrate my 61st birthday with #4.

Each one has a special meaning to me and are in places that are not visible to everyone because they are a very personal thing to me. I am also a wedding and event planner and I'm not sure what my clients would think about this old grandma with tattoos. When my oldest daughter found out I had a tat she was furious, not because I had one but because I didn't tell her! Funny how that works.

I have never been sorry I have my body art and in fact my birthday tattoo will be the logo of the hotel I work at in Baja Mexico and my boss is paying for it. I love the La Fonda Hotel and Spa where I work so it is only fitting that I have it forever imprinted on my body. If you are interested in seeing my body art I will gladly send pictures because I am very proud of them.

Some will ask why I even bothered to get one at 53. Well that's an easy one. Because I could, besides that if I got one when I was 20 it would probably not look to good now but when I die my tattoo's will still look really good.

Lucky 13 Tattoos - Is the Number Thirteen Lucky...
Aug 28th 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

Why do so many people get Lucky 13 tattoos? The number thirteen has long been considered unlucky and sometimes even dangerous. Friday the 13th is credited with being the unluckiest day of the year, a 13th floor doesn’t even exist in most high-rise buildings, and having thirteen dinner guests at one table is said to have fateful results. The tarot card bearing the number thirteen (Roman numerals XIII) symbolizes death. Over the years, horror writers have banked on peoples’ superstitious beliefs of the number thirteen and have probably stirred the fear that many now associate with it.

How did the number become so stigmatic in the first place? Several sources note different theories, some dating back to early times and ancient mythology. According to Nordic legend, Loki (the Norse god of mischief) crashed a party of the gods he wasn’t invited to. Since he was the 13th attendee and, through trickery, caused the death of Balder the Good, it was determined that the number thirteen was evil. In biblical history, twelve disciples joined Jesus for the Last Supper. Judas, the last and thirteenth member to sit at the table, betrayed Jesus which eventually led to his crucifixion.

"I don't know if thirteen is lucky or not. I've been tattooing for thirteen years and my dog is thirteen, so I guess that's good.....unless I lose my job and my dog dies this year." - Kym T.

It’s no wonder some people felt that Apollo 13 was a doomed mission from the start. But do we consider the number unlucky because the ship crashed, or lucky because the crew survived? I guess it depends on whether you’re an optimist or a pessimist!

“I actually like the number 13. It’s always been rather lucky for me. Several things have happened to me on Friday the 13th that were really lucky, and I even had a friend get married on Friday the 13th. She’s been happily married for 27 years.” â€" Karen P.

There are some cultures, however, that appreciate the number thirteen or even revere it as being a symbol of life, fertility, and good fortune. Judaism celebrates a young man’s coming of age when he turns thirteen. In Punjabi, the word thirteen is pronounced tera, which also means “yours,” which is a devotional pronouncement to God.

Another group of people who widely holds the number thirteen in high esteem is the body art community. You can see the evidence while flipping through the pages of any tattoo magazine or viewing the many attendees at a tattoo convention. It shows up in the form of tattoo art over and over again, almost always as a positive symbol, sometimes by itself or accompanied by other “lucky” symbols. It stems from the days of traditional tattooing and still remains one of, if not the, most popular numbers to have inked on one’s body. So, why do tattoo enthusiasts embrace what others fear?

We embrace a lot of things that others fear â€" including tattoos themselves. We find beauty in what others perceive as mutilation. So, maybe it’s not such a stretch that we would also see fortune in what others see as unlucky. Or maybe we’re just all a bunch of optimists! Whether you consider it a Baker’s Dozen or the Devil’s Dozen is up to you.
