Jackson's Wardrobe Malfunction
Sep 7th 2011, 10:09

The Associated Press released an article on Saturday, February 5, that body piercing interest is up (article is no longer available) ever since Janet Jackson's little "wardrobe malfunction" mishap during the Superbowl half-time show with Justin Timberlake. Before I go forward with this article, let me assure you that this is the last time you will hear about this incident on this site, as I believe it has been blown way out of proportion and has gotten very old very fast. However, I do believe the situation demands a certain amount of attention if for no other purpose than to send out a warning to those who now want to jump the body piercing bandwagon just because of this episode.

Whether or not I believe that the "wardrobe malfunction" was intentional or not is really a moot point, but if you really must know my position on this matter I feel that this was nothing more than a publicity stunt designed to pump up Janet's exposure just before the release of her new album. It was no more a mistake than the Madonna/Britney kiss and the apology is no more sincere. Does that mean I hold anything against Ms. Jackson? Nope. As far as I'm concerned, she and any other woman should be free to bare their boob(s) whenever they feel like, but then again the power of controversy would not have been on her side if this was an accepted form of artistic expression.

Back to the original intent of my article. First of all, let's be clear about what you actually saw Janet exposing that day. No, it was not a pastie (a stick-on nipple covering usually used by exotic dancers). It was a piece of jewelry called a nipple shield. A nipple shield is simply a decorative piece of metal that accompanies a normal piercing rod to surround the nipple with some kind of design - in Janet's case, a sun. You can see some examples of nipple shields at The Chain Gang. This is why there is so much controversy around the exposure, because except for what the shield was hiding, Ms. Jackson's nipple was almost fully visible, a clear violation of FCC rules.

Was it sexy? Hell, yeah. Nipple piercings continue to be one of the most erotic forms of body art worn by women. Paired with an exotic piece of jewelry, the nipple piercing can be a source of sensual arousal. But does that mean you should go out and get one, just because Janet Jackson has one? Of course not - especially if you're under 18 years old.

Celebrities have been credited with the growing acceptance of body art, especially tattoos. People see their favorite celebrities wearing them and soon not only stop despising the art form, but also start to want to emulate the celebrities by getting their own. I suppose I should be grateful that my own website might be so popular because of the celebrities that have made tattoos and piercings so mainstream. And to an extent, I suppose I am - grateful. My concern, however, still falls with the hordes of "sheep" that follow so blindly into a trap of conformism that they insist they actually came upon their body art as an act of individuality.

Bottom line, body piercings are more permanent than many want to believe. The general feeling is that if the piercing doesn't "work" it can always be removed. Of course, this is true - but the mark of the piercing, usually represented by a small scar, will almost always remain. Even body piercings shouldn't be taken upon lightly, as they demand great care and can cause serious health problems if not performed or cared for properly. If you want a piercing, it should be because you want it and not because of any outside influence. It needs to be done by a professional, and it needs to be cleaned and tended to carefully. Janet Jackson and Christina Aguilera are not going to come and help you clean your tattoo, and my guess is that neither one of them care whether you get pierced to imitate them or not.

And if you're under 18 and a piercer touches your breast and/or any other private areas - doesn't matter who they are or who you are, it's illegal almost everywhere and is considered molestation. So for all of you young teen girls out there wanting to get this done, keep in mind that it could land you and your so-called piercer in a whole heap of trouble. As I have said many times before, if anyone is willing to do something so blatantly wrong, they are not going to care about you or your safety and it very well could turn into a sexual assualt. Please do not put yourself in this kind of situation and potential danger.

It has been said recently that it is those without tattoos and piercings who are now the true rebels and individuals. There is a part of me that must sadly agree. But then again, there will always be the lot of us who get tattooed and pierced for the love of the art and not for a show of rebellion or imitation. These are the people that will ensure the longevity of a beautiful art form long after the celebrities have dismissed it for something else more attention-getting.

Bridge Piercing
Sep 5th 2011, 10:09

Definition: A bridge piercing, also called an Erl, is a horizontal bar across the bridge of the nose. It's considered a surface piercing, since most people don't have a lot of flesh for the jewelry to grab onto in this area, so the risk of migration and rejection is high.

The best jewelry for a bridge piercing is a small curved barbell. A straight barbell will cause too much tension on the edges of the fistula and could increase the chance of migration.

Contrary to the rumor that a bridge piercing will make you cross-eyed, no Erl piercees have reported any involuntary eye-crossing. In fact, most forget it's even there. If you're noticing the jewelry out of the corner of your eye, the bar is probably too long. It shouldn't be any more visible to you than your nose itself.

It also doesn't interfere with the wearing of glasses or sunglasses. Just make sure it's pierced up high enough and you should be fine.

The starting gauge of your piercing needs to be determined by your piercer, based on how much tissue you have available in this area. The larger gauge you can comfortably wear, the better (to hopefully prevent rejection).

It's important to keep the area free of exposure to harsh cleansers, makeup, and hair products during the initial healing time, which will take about 8-12 weeks. At that time, you can change to a shorter curved barbell if needed, but it will take an additional period of several weeks for the inner tissue to heal.

Frenulum Piercings - Smiley
Sep 5th 2011, 10:09

Definition: Frenulum piercings refer to three possible oral piercings - this page provides information about the upper lip frenulum piercings known as a Smiley or Scrumper. If you lift your upper lip and turn it inside out (while looking in a mirror, of course) you will see a very thin line of skin that connects your upper lip to the gum line. That thin line of connective tissue is called a frenulum. You also have one that connects your lower lip to the gum line, and one under your tongue. When the one under your upper lip is pierced, it's usually called a Smiley - which makes sense because it's only visible when you smile - or a Scrumper.

It may not go through a lot of tissue, but frenulum piercings can be kind of painful. Grab your frenulum between your thumb and forefinger and pinch it. It's a sensitive area. But it's over rather quickly, it heals without too much complication, and it's cute. There are a few caveats with this piercing, though. One - not everyone can get it. If your frenulum is too small, it can't be pierced. Two - it can be prone to migration and rejection, because there isn't a lot of flesh holding it in place and natural movement of the lips can put stress on the piercing. And three - it can cause gum and/or tooth damage, which may or may not be reversible. It's important that you keep a close eye on it for any signs of irritation, indentation, shifting of teeth, scratches in the enamel, etc.

Frenulum piercings are delicate and therefore the jewelry also needs to be small and delicate. This is the only type of piercing that I advocate the use of jewelry as small as 18 gauge. An 18 or 16 gauge CBR that is very small around - usually 1/2 inch - is all this delicate area can really handle.

Healing is pretty quick - about four weeks max for a healthy non-smoker.

Also Known As: Smiley, Scrumper

Eyebrow Piercings
Sep 5th 2011, 10:09

Definition: This can be a piercing anywhere along the brow line on either side. It can be vertical (the most common) or horizontal.

Brow piercings do have a habit of migrating if they're not pierced deeply enough or the jewelry is too thin or heavy. They can be irritated by eyebrow hairs, so plucking the hairs closest to the entry points of the jewelry can be very helpful, especially if you're experiencing swelling or tenderness in a healed piercing. Don't use waxes or any other hair removers while you're healing your piercing.

Recommended Starter Jewelry: 16-12 gauge captive bead ring (CBR) or mini curved barbell. The soft tissue of the eyebrow swells quite a bit at first, so your piercer should pierce you initially with a larger piece of jewelry to accommodate that swelling.(CBRs are the most popular starter jewelry choice for this reason) Many shops include smaller replacement jewelry in the price of the initial piercing, so after about 6 weeks you can have them change it out for you at no additional charge. Make sure you understand exactly what you're getting when you get your piercing and what the shop's policies are.

Aftercare: If you're not sure how to care for your piercing, you can follow my aftercare guide.

Estimated Healing Time: You can change your jewelry after about 6 weeks if you haven't had any issues with the piercing, but it won't be considered fully healed (inside and out) for about 3 months, so it's important you continue to treat it tenderly during that time.

Extra Facts:

1. It doesn't matter which eyebrow you pierce. The location of the piercing does not indicate one sexual orientation over another. It's just personal preference.

2. Hairdressers have an uncanny knack for combing over brow piercings. It's a good idea to cover it with a bandage to protect it while having you're hair done.

Cheek (Dimple) Piercings
Sep 4th 2011, 10:09

Definition: Cheek piercings are exactly what they sound like. They are located on the (facial) cheeks, either in pre-existing dimples or in the same approximate area in order to simulate the look of a dimple. Typically, this is a symmetrical piercing, meaning that both cheeks would be pierced at the same time so they match.

This is a popular piercing because there's something about dimples that symbolizes childhood. When a person smiles and has natural dimples, there's an element of innocence that remains even when the person is older. These adorable cheek piercings can give anyone that youthful look.

Your cheeks are a pretty thick area of flesh to pierce through, and there's a lot of blood vessels inside the mouth, so it's not a real pleasant piercing, especially since you have to get two. But it does usually heal relatively well, as long as you follow good aftercare, which is a combination of facial piercing and oral piercing care. Women have to be careful when using makeup and hairspray - men need to take care when shaving, especially during the initial healing stages. Smoking is definitely a no-no!

Standard jewelry for dimple piercings is a 16 to 12 gauge labret stud. The flat disc inside your mouth doesn't pose as much danger to your teeth and/or gums as a lip piercing, but if you have an oral fixation and can't resist the urge to rub the discs against your teeth, then you're definitely at risk for a problem. If you notice your gums flattening out, bleeding, or having any other signs of trouble, you probably need to remove the piercings. Your oral health is much more important than keeping a pretty piercing.

With a healthy immune system and proper aftercare, your dimples should heal up in approximately 8-12 weeks. At that time, it's important that you change to a shorter labret bar to avoid excessive contact with the teeth and gums.
