Creating Henna Patterns
Nov 2nd 2012, 11:02

Before you actually apply the henna, you will want to have an idea in mind as to the pattern or design. There are several ways to do this. You can buy pre-made stencils and use a brush to apply the henna.

This is probably the easiest way, but it also doesn't look as nice and is nowhere near as detailed as a hand-applied design. Last time we discussed making your own henna cones, which leads to applying the paste by hand. Here, we will explore ways to create henna patterns and where you can find free patterns for download. Creating your own henna pattern is really very simple as long as you have an imagination. It doesn't require a lot of artistic skills, just creativity. Most traditional henna patterns are based on very simple shapes - circles, triangles and lines are the most basic. These shapes can be combined to create a very intricate pattern and a very beautiful henna design.

In Western civilization, where henna is used purely as an artform and not a ritual, there are no guidelines. There are no meanings behind the shapes or patterns and there are no "rules" as to what you can or cannot do. Just have fun! I usually like to choose one shape to be the "dominant" in a theme and expand on it from there. To the right is an example of a quick sketch I did using a heart as the basic theme. As you can see, it is a very simple pattern, but also very detailed. This design can be done on the outside or the palm of the hand, or it could even be used in part anywhere else on the body. The idea is to get it clear in your mind how you want it to look, and the best way to do this is to get it on paper first. Henna stains very quickly, and it's very difficult to "erase" mistakes.

Once you get your design on paper, you have two options. You can do the design freehand and use your drawing as a guide for comparison, or you can trace the design using a sheet of carbon paper and transfer the pattern to the skin. This can cause difficulty, though, because unless you created the pattern specifically for the person you are going to henna, the pattern may not "fit" properly, causing you undue frustration.

Again, keep in mind that this is just a guide and you can always deviate from the original, if necessary, to tailor it to your customer. It's the freedom that goes along with henna art that makes it so enjoyable and so diverse from one artist to the next. Find your own style and you'll be creating your own patterns like a pro in no time!

If you're just not comfortable drawing your own designs, you're not ready or just need a little inspiration, you can download these free sample patterns to get you started. Have fun!

Tattoos / Body Piercings: What's Hot Now: Nipple Piercing

Nipple Piercing
Nov 2nd 2012, 11:02

Nipple piercing is by far one of the most popular forms of body piercing and is often considered the sexiest, leading the way before genital piercings. This ancient form of body adornment provides sexual pleasure upon stimulation and also looks pretty interesting too. If you're considering a nipple piercing, read these FAQ first and discover if it's a natural pair for your body art style.

1. Does a nipple piercing hurt?

As with any form of body piercing or alteration, you should expect a bit of pain with the process. Nipple piercing is said to be fairly quick and you should not expect any form of extreme pain during the procedure, although the sensation may be described as "intense."

2. How old must I be to get my nipples pierced?

Body piercing laws and regulations vary state to state. Most require parental consent for anyone under the age of 18, so be prepared to show your ID card and make things legal before getting any sort of body modification. If you're not of age you'll just have to wait. There's nothing worse than risking your health and safety for an at-home procedure in the meantime.

3. Are nipple piercings sexy?

What you consider sexy may not be the general opinion of the word. Nipple piercing, like all forms of body piercing, is subject to the individual. This is exactly why it's so important to have a sound mind and your own ideas prior to altering your body. You don't need approval from anyone but yourself. If you're pleased with the way a nipple piercing looks, why not try it out? Spend time finding a diligent piercer so that you can avoid human error as much as possible. In mass response, our voter poll found here suggests that the nipple is the sexiest form of body piercing.

4. What's the origin of nipple piercing?

Nipple piercing has vintage roots. From the late 1800's, when fashionable Parisian women wore "Bosom ring" nipple piercings paired with low neckline dresses to further entice, to Roman battles and the fighting men who wore armor and capes suspended from their nipples, there's a strange fascination with nipple piercing. Constant stimulation of the nipples can be very erotic, which is likely the very reason so many people are a fan of this suggestive site. During sexual play, a nipple piercing provides your partner with something to do, and the mere sensation can be quite pleasurable and arousing for both of you.

5. Where should I get a nipple piercing?

Most tattoo shops have a professional body piercer onboard who's capable of performing a body piercing. Bear in mind if you have any special requests, anatomical issues or need more attention for the piercing, you may need to go elsewhere. Anyone who's considering a body piercing should first check out Elayne Angel's book, The Piercing Bible, for a more definitive and in-depth look at the piercing process and any special considerations.

6. Can I pierce my nipples myself?

The answer to this question is fairly straightforward. Yes and no. To say you can't would imply lack of ability, which most people likely have. You can also tattoo yourself, perform a genital piercing and even pierce your tongue if you'd like, but chances are you'd rather leave all of these jobs to the professional, as you wisely should. Piercing is not only technical, placement is key as well. Most nipple piercings that have been done at home come with the risk of infection, disease, improper placement and a host of other unattractive situations. If you're going to pierce your nipples, save up a bit of money and have a professional do the job.

7. Should I pierce one or both nipples?

For cosmetic reasons, some people choose a single nipple piercing while others pierce both. For starters, you can try one nipple and see how it looks. You can always add to your body modifications as you see fit. Once you experience the healing process of the nipple, you'll know what to expect should you opt for the other. You can also have several piercings in one nipple and wear different types of jewelry for a customized body style. Be creative with your adornments.

Tongue and Tragus Photo Experiences
Part 1: Renee Gets her Tongue Pierced

After moving to a new state, I was really nervous about the idea of looking for a new piercer. I was really attached to my guy Steve in Dallas, Texas, so the idea of having to find someone new to trust with my skin was something I positively dreaded.

I had been wanting to get my tragus pierced for months. I had visited a few studios in Indianapolis and everyone seemed nice enough, but I was still hesitant. Well, they say that word of mouth is a very powerful tool of advertising, and I guess they're right. Here is how it all went down...

Renee talking with Billy before her piercing

Renee getting "clamped"

My friend Renee had been wanting to get her tongue pierced. She already knew exactly who she wanted to do it - her problem was getting up the guts to go through with it. She said this guy Billy at Metamorphosis (Indianapolis, Indiana) had pierced her husband's lobes a few months back and was just "the greatest". I told her I could provide her with the moral support and motivation to get her piercing if she could promise me that "her guy" was really good. She said absolutely, and we made our appointments together.

The day finally arrived and I was totally psyched. I met Renee at Metamorphosis and we filled out our paperwork. Billy was there to greet us and talk to us while we did all that, and I had to admit he seemed really cool! After we did all that, we went back to his work room (which by the way was decorated with some really cool statues and a soothing water fountain).

Ouch! The needle goes in...

Putting the barbell in and securing it

I expected to hop up on the table, get a little pep talk, do the piercing and be out of there. Uh-uh. Not with Billy. Renee was up first for her piercing. The "little pep talk" was a full 15 minutes. Billy took the time to explain absolutely everything Renee should expect with her piercing - what problems she might encounter, how to deal with them, how to care for it, and of course a little chit-chat to keep things friendly and fun. During the piercing, Billy explained every little thing he was doing and why. He took his time to make sure the marks he made for the piercing were absolutely perfect and admitted he is a bit of a perfectionist (which we had no problem with!).

By the time he was ready to actually pierce her tongue, I am confident there is no way she had any unanswered questions. Her only fear remaining was how much it would hurt. That was answered in less than a second and she barely even flinched. She said it hurt, but it was nothing like she expected. It's now been just over a week and she's already talking and eating normal and getting used to her new addict...er, addition.

The finished product!
