My Visit to L.A. Ink
Dec 31st 2011, 11:16

This was the tattoo Yede and her niece both got. It's very well done, but I shudder to think that the shop minimum is $200 so you know this small tattoo cost at least that much.

Needless to say, this was a disappointing visit. TV show or not, celebrity or not, when you run a business it should be handled professionally and potential clients should be treated with respect. If you are ever treated this way in any tattoo studio, walk away. There are other shops out there with better people. Never settle and never assume all tattoo artists have rock star egos. Don't give people more credit than they deserve just because they are on TV or have celebrity status. We're all just people.

Just a few miles away from L.A. Ink, we visited a fantastic shop with the warmest and most welcoming crew. Next week, you'll be able to read about them!

Guide to Body Piercings

Body piercings are considerably more simple than tattoos, because they're not as permanent, so the commitment isn't as great. But they can also be more complicated because there are so many different types to choose from. There are different pain levels, risks, and healing difficulties with each one. Knowing these factors can help you to make the right decision when thinking of getting pierced.

This guide will serve as a source of information for some of the more well-known piercings. It will inform you of where they are located, what they look like, what kinds of jewelry are best and the expected healing times. It will help you to choose the right piercing artist, and provide instructions on how to care for your new piercing.

Consult this guide when you consider a body piercing, and pass it along to your friends if they are thinking about it. Your best defense against a piercing disaster is knowledge.

Ear Lobe Piercings
Dec 30th 2011, 11:08

Definition: Ear lobe piercings are obviously the grandfather of all body piercings. They can be traced back to ancient civilizations and have a vast history. The lobe is the easiest place on the body to pierce and has the highest success rate when it's done properly. It heals well, and can be adorned with many different styles of jewelry. Lobe piercings can also be stretched, an ancient practice that continues to have great influence in modern society.

Unfortunately, the invention of the piercing gun has made modern ear piercings even more risky than tribal ritual piercings done hundreds of years ago. No piercing, including the earlobe, should be done with a gun or squeeze trigger piercing apparatus. Please avoid department store and mall kiosk piercing stations - the people there are not trained on proper sterilization methods and everything about gun piercings is the exact opposite of how a piercing should be executed and treated. For more information, read Piercing Gun vs. the Needle.

Recommended Starter Jewelry: You've got plenty of jewelry options for a lobe piercing - CBRs and circular barbells come in a wide range of styles, colors, and sizes. I don't recommend anything smaller than 16 gauge for a lobe piercing, and even if you want to stretch to a larger size eventually, your first piercing shouldn't be any larger than 12 gauge.

The earlobe heals pretty well, but exposure to bacteria is high risk so proper cleansing is essential. Earphones, telephones, pillows, makeup, and hairspray are just a few sources of bacteria and irritants that can make healing any ear piercing more difficult. Initial healing, allowing for jewelry change, takes about 6-8 weeks. That doesn't mean it's completely healed inside and out, though, so you can't stretch your lobe that quickly.

If you're interested in more information on stretching a lobe piercing, please read How to Safely Stretch a Piercing.

A lobe orbital is two lobe piercings connected with one CBR loop, so the jewelry looks as if it "orbits" the ear, like Saturn's rings.

Lost or Swallowed Jewelry
Dec 28th 2011, 11:08

Although most body piercing jewelry â€" especially CBRs and barbells â€" are usually pretty secure, it’s always possible for them to come loose. You should give your barbells a little twist every few days just to make sure they’re holding tight. CBRs should be checked occasionally to ensure that the bead is still held snugly in place.

But, if you should happen to lose the ball off of your CBR or the end off your barbell, don’t panic. Since some piercings, especially new ones, can close up quickly, it’s important that you don’t remove the jewelry. Instead, you need to find a way to temporarily hold it in place until you can get to a piercing shop and have it fixed.

Lost CBR Bead
CBRs usually tend to stay in place pretty well even if the ball is missing. If you have to wait a couple of days before you can get a replacement bead for it and you’re afraid the ring may fall out, wrap a piece of tape around the open section to close it up. This is not a healthy long-term solution, but you’ll be fine for a day or two until you can replace the bead.

If the CBR is in your mouth, take a small piece of chewed gum or dental wax and mold it to fit in place of the bead. Keep in mind that sugary gum kept constantly in your mouth isn’t good for your teeth; sugar-free gum would be better. Spicy gum like cinnamon or mint might burn against oral tissue, so go with something that isn’t harsh. And don’t go more than a day like this â€" get to the piercing shop as soon as you can.

Lost Barbell End
If you lose the ball end off of a barbell, you’ve got a good chance that the bar will manage to wriggle its way out quickly, so wad up a piece of chewed gum or dental wax and stick it over the end. Again, not a healthy long-term solution but should be sufficient to hold the jewelry in place for a day or so until you can get to the shop and have it repaired.

Whole Jewelry Fell Out
If the entire ring or barbell fell out and you’re afraid the piercing will close up on you before you can get to the piercing shop, you can try to re-insert the jewelry. If your piercing is healed, this shouldn’t be a problem at all. If it’s new, the tissue inside the fistula may still be raw and can easily be damaged by a misaligned insertion. You need to be very carefulâ€"move slowly and follow the exact angle of the original piercing. If you encounter any resistance, stop! You can realign the jewelry and try again, but don’t force it.

If you can’t get the jewelry back in, don’t try shoving anything else in there to hold it open. Just keep the open piercing as clean as possible (so you don’t introduce harmful bacteria inside the fistula) and get to the piercing shop as soon as possible. Even if the hole closes up a little bit, your piercer can sometimes use a taper to gently pry it back open so you don’t lose the piercing. Worst case scenario is that it closes up and you have to wait and have it repierced.

Swallowed Jewelry
If you have an oral piercing and something comes loose, it’s possible to accidentally swallow part or all of the jewelry. If you just swallow the bead from a CBR or a ball end off a barbell, which are both about the size of a pea, I wouldn’t worry too much. They are mostly smooth except for the tiny screw end on an internally threaded bar-ball, which doesn’t pose much problem and usually passes without incident.

Swallowing a whole CBR, depending on the size, may or may not cause a problem. Since the bead has to be missing to have swallowed it in the first place, then there is a small opening that could, theoretically, get caught on things on the way through the digestive system. But, since the edges are smooth and most of it is circular, it should pass without posing a risk of puncturing anything. If it’s too large to pass through the more narrow passageways of the digestive system, though, it could become lodged and create an obstruction.

Swallowing a barbell is a little more risky, and still most barbells pass through the system without incident. But because it’s longer and will have at least one small end that could poke through soft tissue, it is more likely to create a problem on the way through the digestive system than other types of body jewelry.

If you feel like you’re choking, gagging or can’t breathe, you need help to dislodge the jewelry immediately. If no one is around, you’ll have to perform the Heimlich on yourself. Now is a good time to learn how to do that, before you find yourself in danger.

Danger Signs
It may not be pleasant, but the only way you’re going to know for sure if the jewelry has passed through your body is to check your bowel movements. But unless you plan to go sifting through stool for a week, which may be necessary if you’re really worried, it’s very possible that you won’t see it.

If at any point â€" even a week after swallowing the object â€" you feel any pain or tenderness anywhere along the digestive line, have a fever, bleeding, or vomiting, get to the emergency room. If you’re a teen whose parents didn’t even know you had a piercing, this is no time to worry about getting in trouble. Internal damage can kill you.

Conventional Piercing Guide
Ear - Lobe & Non-Cartilage Piercings

Ear Lobe

The lobe piercing is obviously the grandfather of all piercings. It can be traced back to ancient civilizations and has a vast history. The lobe is the easiest place on the body to pierce and has the highest success rate. It heals well, and can be adorned with many different styles of jewelry. A lobe piercing can also be stretched, which is something practiced in modern times as well as in some primitive cultures.

No piercing, including the ear, should be done with a gun or squeeze piercer. For more information, read Piercing Gun Vs. the Needle.

Recommended Starter Jewelry: 16-12 gauge CBR (stud jewelry is not recommended as it is a breeding ground for bacteria and is too tight to allow for proper cleaning and healing)

Estimated Healing Time: 3-6 weeks

Lobe Orbital

The lobe orbital is a rare piercing, but interesting nonetheless. The pierce goes side to side through the lobe, rather than front to back. This kind of piercing should be done only by a very experienced, professional piercer.

Battle of the Scratchers
Dec 28th 2011, 11:08

I've been reading a lot lately about "scratchers" fighting for their right to tattoo. A scratcher, basically, is someone who taught him/herself the art of tattooing without the benefit of an apprenticeship under a professional artist. This may sound harmless enough in itself, but "scratchers" have been scrutinized under a very close microscope lately, and have been coming under serious attack by tattoo artists all over. I thought I'd give the subject a little attention myself.

The art of tattooing has long been a trade which traditionally was handed down from generation to generation through apprenticeships. A student would work under the supervision and training of the master, and in return for free labor, the master would train the student. Needless to say, that long-standing tradition is gone. Apprenticeships these days are as follows: The student pays (usually a very large sum) in return for his education, and the master, in return....well, he STILL gets free labor. And many times, as I'm seeing a lot of now...the artists offering apprenticeships are NOT masters. Many times, they are new to trade themselves, and are using "apprenticeships" as a way to create revenue, rather than as a way to create future masters of the trade.

So, why apprentice? Well, unfortunately we live in a day and age where tattooing could literally be the death of a customer if proper procedures are not strictly carried out. Needles and equipment must be properly sterilized, cross-contamination and strict sterilization techniques must be adhered to, or disease can spread as quickly as wildfire.Spreading blood-born pathogens is a quick way to kill a client, AND the reputation of the entire profession of tattooing. If you think that the only thing you'd learn as an apprentice is how to stick a needle in someone...think again! There is so much to be learned, and many of these things simply cannot be learned just by reading a book. If you think you're ready to start tattooing on your own, answer the following questions:

  • What are the laws in your city/state on tattooing?
  • What certifications and/or licenses are required to tattoo legally in your city/state?
  • What is the procedure of operating an autoclave? What temperature must the autoclave reach and for how long?
  • What is a blood-born pathogen and how do you prevent the spread of it, and cross-contamination?
  • How do you thoroughly clean and disinfect needles and tubes before autoclaving?
  • What layer of epidermis of the skin must you NOT enter to prevent scarring of a tattoo?
  • What is plasma, and what does the leakage of plasma during a tattoo indicate?

These are only a few of the things that are absolutely necessary for a tattoo artist to know, and if you can't answer all of these questions with concise understanding, you are not ready to be a tattoo artist!Go get an apprenticeship!

Now, don't get me wrong..I don't think all apprentices need to be taught how to draw! Some of the most fabulous artwork comes from "scratchers" and new apprentices. The reason that western tattoos have evolved so much over the years is because so many new faces have been added to the roster, and because they didn't have someone standing over there shoulders saying "You can't do that!", they have found a wonderful world of variety, color, and effects that old school tattoos cannot hold a candle to.

The aforementioned, however, is not a reason to go off and try to learn how to tattoo on your own. Gain experience from a master, pay your dues, put in your time and dedication to the art, and learn how to do it right.

That also puts a burden on the tattoo artists already out there. You cannot look down on a scratcher if you turn away that eager young man/woman that came into your shop wanting an apprenticeship. If you want the next generation of tattooists to be trained in the traditional way, it is your responsibility to make sure that opportunity is there! And remember, too, your apprentice is not a walking cash flow. They are our future.

Body Piercing Aftercare - New Piercing Care and Remedies to Common Piercing Problems
Dec 24th 2011, 12:06

Body Piercing Aftercare and Remedies to Common Piercing Problems T.L.C. stands for tender loving care, and that is exactly what your new piercing is going to need. Slacking off on your aftercare or using harmful products will only prolong your discomfort and the healing process.

Most piercers will give you aftercare instructions, and the general rule of thumb would be to follow their advice. But I have found that about 60% of all customers allow this information to enter one ear and exit the other. Also, 47% of all piercing clients lose their paper aftercare instructions and blame it on their hungry dog. And then there is the 21% that go to a mall kiosk and get pierced with a gun, and then come here to learn they shouldn't have done that. For those of you in any of those groups, or if your piercer really didn't tell you how to care for your new piercing, here are my recommendations.

*Disclaimer* I do not claim to be a professional piercer. Not all aftercare methods are appropriate for all people, but I am recommending what I have found to be best after experiencing and caring for over 20 piercings.

General Piercing Aftercare

What You May Need:

  • Sea Salt
  • Mild Anti-Bacterial or Antimicrobial Liquid Soap/Wash (Like Provon or Satin)
  • Cotton Balls
  • Cotton-tipped Swabs
  • Small disposable cups (2-4 ounces)

Cleaning Your Piercing:
1. First, wash your hands thoroughly. Never touch your piercing or jewelry with dirty hands.
2. Saturate a cotton ball with warm water, and gently wipe away any "crusties" that have gathered around the piercing site. Throw the cotton ball away.
3. Apply a generous amount of liquid soap to your fingertip, and apply to the piercing site and jewelry. Make sure you get the soap everywhere, but rotating the jewelry is not necessary as long as you work the soap around the piercing and jewelry completely.
4. Rinse the piercing and jewelry several times with warm water, ensuring that all soap has been removed.
5. Dry your piercing with a clean paper towel and then dispose of it.>

Cleaning Tips

  • Although it's a very antiquated method, some piercers will still tell you to rotate your jewelry. This is not wrong per say, but I have found that it causes more problems than it solves. Any crusties or bacteria still on the jewelry are then introduced inside the raw piercing when the jewelry is rotated. This can cause irritation or even infection. It's best to just clean the piercing and jewelry thoroughly without actually moving it.
Acceptable Healing Aids and Products
  • Tea Tree Oil - This soothing liquid cools and refreshes an irritated piercing. Use only high quality tea tree oil that has been diluted with distilled water.
  • Emu Oil - A universal healing product that has been discovered to also produce exceptional results when healing a piercing.
  • H2Ocean - Although some would call it "glorified saline solution," most do report excellent healing results with this product.
  • Saline Solution - Less expensive and more readily available than most other products, saline solution is very effective in soothing and healing a new piercing. It's also an acceptable substitute for sea salt soaks.
Do NOT Use:
  • Hydrogen Peroxide - Hydrogen peroxide kills bacteria, but it also kills the white blood cells attempting to heal your piercing. It can cause irritation and lengthen overall healing time.
  • Rubbing Alcohol - Alcohol will dry the skin and irritate the raw piercing, which could actually lead to infection.
  • Glyoxide - This is a product that contains hydrogen peroxide and hinders healing rather than aiding it.
  • Ear Care Solution - Solutions that are provided by jewelry boutiques and department store piercers usually contain alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and other harmful chemicals that only aggravate a new piercing.
  • Ointments - Antibacterial ointments or similar products only clog pores and/or kill good cells trying to heal the piercing.
New piercings and sometimes irritated piercings can greatly benefit from a Sea Salt Soak. This simple remedy can soothe pain and even draw out infection when it's done properly. Visit the All About Sea Salt Soaks to find out if a sea salt soak would be beneficial to you and, if so, how to do it.

Female Genital Piercings Guide
Dec 24th 2011, 11:11

Genital piercings are by far the most erotic, sensual, controversial, and lately...the most popular form of bodily enhancement. There are a wide variety of reasons people choose to pierce their genetalia, whether it be to celebrate a slave/master relationship, to enhance sexual stimulation, or simply to adorn the body with yet more shiny jewelry. Whatever your personal reason may be, it goes without saying that a genital piercing requires a lot of commitment and dedication to baby your new piercing to prevent infection. This requires sacrifices, including sexual limitations, which you have to determine whether or not they are worth. This guide is to help you decide whether or not a genital piercing is for you, and to inform you on the different styles available.

Tattoos / Body Piercings: What's Hot Now: Pamela Anderson - Hepatitis C

Pamela Anderson - Hepatitis C
Dec 23rd 2011, 11:08

This is the kind of publicity anti-tattoo people love. Pamela Anderson finds out she has the Hepatitis C virus, and blames it on a tattoo. She claims that she and Tommy Lee (ex-husband and former Motley Crue drummer) shared a tattoo needle, from which she contracted the disease. Tommy swears he's never had the disease, and tested negative on Tuesday. She says Tommy publicized her condition to make her look bad. Lee's rep says she's blaming it on him for revenge in their current custody battle.

Do you see a pattern here?

It's all the same old "he said, she said" crap, but the problem is, when someone says a tattoo is to blame for disease, people are quick to listen and believe it.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying I'm insensitive to Miss Anderson's plight. But what gets me is that no one seems to be considering the possibility that she could have gotten it some other way, or yes, even from some other person.

I'm not accusing Miss Anderson of anything - but it's no big secret that Hepatitis C is a blood-borne illness that can be spread through unprotected sex and also shared drug needles, not just tattoo needles. And whether or not she even got it from Tommy Lee has not yet been indisputably determined.

I'm not saying it's impossible she could have gotten it from a tattoo needle. Of course she could have. But will someone please tell me why two people who make as much money as they do even need to share a tattoo needle? That suggests that the tattoo artist was a shady character, because no professional would have used the same needle on two people, even if they were a couple. Apparently, the artist in question is quite irritated by this accusation, and says that the couple did not share needles.

Body Art In the News
Have you ever noticed that just about everything about body art that ends up in the news is negative? Or that studies and surveys always manage to twist the facts to blame body art for the problems in the world? The fact is, some people want to believe that tattoos are bad and they'll do anything to prove it. They will turn one case of Hepatitis into a mass-hysteria against the art. The media feeds on negativity, and credibility-bashing stories are a hot item.

It is our responsibility to separate fact from hype. The fact is that Hepatitis can be spread through contaminated needles. The fact is that sharing needles of any kind can transmit the disease. The fact is that conscientious professionals know how to avoid these problems, and when properly executed with a new needle, it is practically impossible to spread infection. The fact is that you put yourself at the same risk when you go to the doctor or dentist. And the fact is that your best defense against Hepatitis is knowledge.

Sharing any kind of needle is stupid. Not going to a clean and sterile professional for a tattoo (or piercing) is stupid. Yes, you can get Hepatitis from a tattoo, but only when proper precautions are ignored.

Be safe, be responsible, be smart, be well.

"Straight Edge"
Dec 20th 2011, 11:09

Throughout my high school years people would now and again bring up the topic of tattoos, and when asked what I would get, the answer was always simple for me. Nothing.

Back in those days I was sure that, since I had a low pain threshold and having anything messing with my skin made me woozy, that I would never even think about getting a tattoo.

High school passed, and during my first year at college I began to ponder the idea of getting a tattoo. The first reason I started thinking about this was the choice I had made for my life back in high school. I live a straight edge lifestyle (for those ignorant of this term, it's basically a choice to live life without the self destructive forces that many in society live by - drugs, alcohol, smoking.. any sorts of poisons).

The letter X often represents this lifestyle. This is because when this movement (for lack of a better word) started in the mid-80's, clubs would put an X on the hand of those who were too young to drink. Eventually the straight edge scene started bringing themselves to clubs with the X already on their hands, 21 or not.

Today, many still ink a single X onto their hand (with a marker) at shows and clubs to show their devotion to the lifestyle. For those of us who feel more strongly, a tattoo is often an obvious way to make the distinction that this IS a life choice, and cannot be taken back. Eventually I decided I would go for it. I was still a little worried about the pain, but a lifetime of dog bites and broken arms had prepared me for the worst.

Finally in April I went and had it done. The tattoo is 3 X's on my upper arm, the common tattoo starting point for many. Why 3 x's? - because straight edge had originally grown from the hardcore scene.. which also uses an X as a common symbol.(ex. p X a = pa hardcore , x X x = straight edge)

The x's are done in an lode english style font and have a thin outline. I love them, and was very happy with the work. However, I knew after getting these that the shop I had gone to left a little to be desired from me. It was small, dark, crowded, and was run by older bikers.. who I just don't feel have a modern tattoo connection. Nonetheless, the tattoo was great, and the addiction had started.

When I decided to get my next tattoo a few months ago, my friend recommended a nearby shop to me, and so we went over there. The guy who runs it is younger, in his 20's I guess, knows his stuff, is friendly, and much more in touch with modern kids. The shop was large, well lit, and very clean all over. I was initially struck by all this and got my second tattoo 15 minutes after walking in. It is a larger piece than my first - the liberty bell on my back below my neck (to show my love for my home town). The work was excellent, and I knew I had found my shop.

Earlier today I went back and spoke with the artist again. I'm going to be getting a nautical star on the inside of my elbow. The price for this one is a little high, but he told me its really hard to do and it will hurt a lot more than my back did. I figured both points before I had walked in, as the flesh is very thin and sensitive at this spot. I told him I'd stop back next weekend when I had the money.

As you can see, the first one is the hardest to bring yourself to get. After you get it, you'll surely be hooked on the wonderful art of tattooing. There's a great feeling of deciding where to put what, even if you can't do it yourself, you are the one who decides what it will look like and what the final result will be. It's a great way to show creativity, character, and just make life a little more exciting.

THE PAIN ISSUE:

Does it hurt? Yes.

How bad? That depends on where you're getting it. A general rule of thumb: Less flesh, more pain. Arms aren't bad. Chests are supposed to be a bit worse. The back wasn't as bad as my arm (I think because I knew what to expect), but it felt a little weird when he did shading over the edges of my shoulder blades. Honestly, the worst pain was that of my foot and leg falling asleep from sitting still for 2 hours.

Also, obviously, sensitive areas like anything that bends (like the inside of your elbow) are going to hurt a bit more. Just keep in mind,.. it's a very temporary pain and a lifetime of pleasure. In fact, once the tattoo is finished, the WORST pain you will feel is a sunburn-like feeling for a day or two.

Another thing about the pain is the adrenaline effect. Like any wound that your body receives adrenaline immediately starts to flow and numb the area, so after you make it through the first minute or two, your body adapts and the pain subsides immensely.

SO anyway, if you're thinking of getting a tattoo, my advice is to think long and hard about what to get, and choose the right shop to do the job, but by all means,.. don't be afraid!

-Eric

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Bottom Line

Brilliantly portrayed action/horror film based on the first book of the Millennium Trilogy by Steig Larsson. This foreign version is spoken in Swedish and has English subtitles, which are easy to keep up with. I wouldn't recommend the books or the movie to anyone who is under 18 or is overly sensitive to graphic depictions of physical and sexual violence.

Pros

  • Wonderful adaptation of the book by Stieg Larsson
  • Brilliant cast portray their characters accurately
  • Very few details omitted
  • Edge-of-your-seat suspense and action film; enjoyable even if you haven't read the book

Cons

  • A few minor omissions and inaccuracies compared with the book

Description

  • You basically get four stories in one, the first being the story of Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who makes a critical mistake and faces jail time for it.
  • The second story is of Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant computer hacker/sociopath whose "guardian", Nils Bjurman, dominates and violates her until she exacts her revenge.
  • The third story is of the well-known Vanger family, which holds a dark and disturbing secret. Mikael Blomkvist is hired to discover which family member murdered Harriet Vanger.
  • The fourth story is how Blomkvist and Salander end up working together on the Vanger case and then find themselves in mortal danger the closer they get to discovering the truth.

Guide Review - Foreign Film Review - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I’ve read the first two books of the Millennium Trilogy, and I have to say that I haven’t been this excited about a book series since Harry Potter. I just got the third book and I can’t wait to start reading it, but I’ve also been very interested in seeing the film versions and had been considering purchasing the DVDs. And then a friend of mine discovered that a local arts theater was actually playing the movie on the big screen, so we went to see it the very next day.

Oftentimes, when you see a film that’s based on a favorite book, the results are disappointing. They cut out a lot of important details, take certain liberties with the plot lines, choose horrible actors, and basically mutilate something you love in print. I’m happy to say that this was not the case with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Casting: The most important character, Lisbeth Salander, was brilliantly portrayed by Noomi Rapace. She pulled off the genius/sociopath role with perfection, teetering between calculated reasoning and complete loss of control and conscience. The second most important character, Mikael Blomkvist, was also skillfully portrayed by actor Michael Nyqvist. He was the perfect example of, as my best friend says, someone who was “ridden hard and put away wet!” And even the evil Nils Bjurman, played by Peter Andersson, was portrayed as the disgusting, foul pig that he was with no apologies. The rest of the actors and actresses that took part in this movie were almost all equally well-chosen for the roles they played, apart from Lena Endre who played Erika Berger, Blomkvist’s business partner and lover. More on that in a bit.

Plot and Details: The creators of this movie clearly read the book and took painstaking care to follow the storyline as closely as possible. There were times that even full quotes by certain characters matched the text from the book itself. I honestly spotted only a few minor discrepancies between the film and the book â€" one was the omission of the polyamorous relationship between Mikael, Erika, and Erika’s husband (who didn’t appear in the film at all) and the fact that Mikael was quite the tramp throughout the story line, spending considerable mattress time with a variety of women whose paths were crossed with his during the development of the story. But I suppose those slight discrepancies didn’t taint the overall picture â€" for the most part, everything I would consider ultimately central to the plot-line were included. Because of this, the run time of the movie was 152 minutes, which in no way created drag and was completely appropriate in order to do the story justice, a concept that Hollywood can’t seem to grasp.
