Interview with Tattoo Artist Sarah Miller
Apr 30th 2013, 11:11

Sarah Miller is a tattoo artist and co-owner of Wyld Chyld in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. She got her start after a roommate gave her the push to hone her hidden skill. Here's how Sarah went from the college dorm to the stage of SPIKE TV's Ink Master with her machine and unbridled talent.

How has being on Ink Master affected your career:

Being on a show, a lot of people are seeing my work now and they want tattoos from me and it's crazy. The biggest benefit of Ink Master was the criticisms the judges gave me. I kind of needed it.

Would you do the Ink Master show again?

In a heartbeat.

How long have you been tattooing?

This past March was my seven year anniversary. I was going to college for graphic design, and my sophomore year I got a roommate and she was a full time tattoo artist. She saw my drawings and kept telling me "You should tattoo. You should tattoo." I kept turning her down, until one day I came home from school with a machine set up and she said "Just try it." Once it clicked, I thought this is awesome. I was such an idiot.

Do you think the increase in tattoo related television shows have helped educate people in quality tattoos?

I really hope that more people are taking it like that instead of look at how much money they are making and "I can make a quick buck like that." There is a huge amount of people who are getting a cheap Chinese made kit off of eBay and they are going to town with no supervision or formal training in tattooing. With no idea of what they are doing, they are creating a huge mess for us. People are seeing these shows and seeing quality but they are going out sometimes and settling just to get a tattoo.

What's your favorite style to tattoo?

Photo-realism because I love doing portraits. I'm really into art and paintings in addition to tattoos. Over the next few years I really want to discover my niche, my style. I am still growing and I don't want to stop.

Is there any type of tattoo you want to do but haven't found the right canvas for?

Any of my personal pieces. I don't just give them out to anybody. I only do each of my illustrations on one person and that's it, and I want to mesh with the person and make sure everything is cool.

How old were you when you started drawing and realized you were good?

I started drawing when I was two years old. That's my earliest memory. I remember drawing The Little Mermaid. I really didn't consider myself good until the past couple of years. I am probably harsher on myself than anybody. I am my own worst critic. I will finish a piece and think, 'Oh man that sucks.'

Since Ink Master you have been traveling allover the country and going to the top tattooing events. What is the best way for people to get tattooed by you and meet you?

As of right now I have a lot of people on my waiting list and I am not really booking anyone currently in my shop. I do have a few openings at conventions or guest spots, and the best way to get a tattoo at a convention or at a guest spot is to call my shop at (412) 668-2263 and get on the waiting list.

Since Ink Master do you find people approach you for tattoos just because you were on the show?

Yeah a lot of that. My rates have gone up and not everyone can afford my rates when they want to get something really, really small. I want to tattoos to be more than a lick and stick, I want to do an amazing piece. Each artist has their own style and I want tattoos to be an artistic expression. It should mean something to the person getting it.

Is there any type of style you are trying hard to master?

I just want to keep pushing color-realism from portraits to an illustration. Drew Struzan is phenomenal and captures an iconic image without saying anything. I did a fairy tale Sleeping Beauty piece, and its an iconic story and I took it out of context and I put my own spin to it and its one of my favorite pieces that I have ever done.

Any other television shows in the works?

Not really. There is a lot I am thinking about, I would be interested in a TV show, and there have been a few things that could be fun in the future.

Before Ink Master you did not travel as much, has the new travel helped your tattooing being exposed to other artists?

Being around the most amazing artists in the country, yes it is humbling to see them work so effortlessly. It is inspirational. I was just in Germany a few weeks ago and it was phenomenal. I really just want to tattoo more.

What is your favorite tattoo touring event and why?

I think right now between the Ink Life Tour , it is very homey and family and it's nice to just see everybody. I also like the even bigger shows with the huge, big name artists because they are amazing.

Do you think the Ink Master judging was fair and would you have done it differently?

It is subjective. The hardest thing was figuring out what the judges were looking for and how to deliver your art to match what they were trying to get.

Something that one person likes another person will not like. The hardest thing was figuring out what the judges were looking for, and trying to deliver art to match what they wanted. I don't think at the time there was anything I could differently. Now I could do better.

Watch out world, she can! Thank you Sarah Miller and best wishes for your continued success.

Tattoos / Body Piercings: What's Hot Now: Bridge Piercing

Bridge Piercing
Apr 29th 2013, 11:11

Definition: A bridge piercing, also called an Erl, is a horizontal bar across the bridge of the nose. It's considered a surface piercing, since most people don't have a lot of flesh for the jewelry to grab onto in this area, so the risk of migration and rejection is high.

The best jewelry for a bridge piercing is a small curved barbell. A straight barbell will cause too much tension on the edges of the fistula and could increase the chance of migration.

Contrary to the rumor that a bridge piercing will make you cross-eyed, no Erl piercees have reported any involuntary eye-crossing. In fact, most forget it's even there. If you're noticing the jewelry out of the corner of your eye, the bar is probably too long. It shouldn't be any more visible to you than your nose itself.

It also doesn't interfere with the wearing of glasses or sunglasses. Just make sure it's pierced up high enough and you should be fine.

The starting gauge of your piercing needs to be determined by your piercer, based on how much tissue you have available in this area. The larger gauge you can comfortably wear, the better (to hopefully prevent rejection).

It's important to keep the area free of exposure to harsh cleansers, makeup, and hair products during the initial healing time, which will take about 8-12 weeks. At that time, you can change to a shorter curved barbell if needed, but it will take an additional period of several weeks for the inner tissue to heal.

Butterfly Art for Tattoo Ideas
Apr 29th 2013, 11:11

"From lips, onto the skin

Oh! Memories you lead me through

And resting there, you shall find

the butterfly tattoo..."

By Wieslaw L Kalinowski

Butterflies, second only to dragons, are one of the most popular tattoo subjects today. You will find small butterflies, large butterflies, tribal butterflies and full-color butterflies. Some are more animated and some very true-to-life. However you like your butterflies, finding just the right design can be easier said than done. There are so many different species of this winged insect that one could spend days searching through pictures to find what they are looking for. For that reason, this Inspiration feature will help you find some of the best butterfly resources on the Net. First, we'll take a look at real butterfly photography, then we'll explore simpler, more animated clipart.

One thing I have discovered while searching for butterfly pictures is that there are some really great photographers out there posting their photos on the Net. When searching for a butterfly tattoo design, nothing beats the beauty of Nature. The following galleries will lead you to some of the most breathtaking butterflies caught "in action" doing what butterflies do best.

Photos From Nature - Butterflies
This page of thumbnails loads very quickly, and each of the thumbnails leads you to a close-up photo. These close-ups are just awe-inspiring. There is so much detail and the colors are so vivid you feel as if you can reach out and touch it, but you might fear that it will fly away.

The Butterfly Website Picture Gallery
This photo gallery has over 600 butterfly and insect pictures. Each species is divided by family. Choose a particular family, and that will bring you to a page of thumbnails. Each thumbnail then leads to a full-sized image. Navigation is not quite as easy, but the variety and the pictures are worth it!

Top 5 Tattoo Fails
Apr 29th 2013, 11:11

The following top 5 tattoo fails prove you should really think before you ink a permanent mark on your body. From bad meanings to scratcher skills, the following tattoos are all strange and bad in their own unique way. Before you opt for body art, put a little thought into your tattoo pieces. Don't go to a shop drunk, under the influence, or after a bad break-up just to feed a fix. Remember, tattoos can also be addictive. Once you have one, you'll understand just how easy it is to want another. Tattoos tell a story, and no matter how good or bad, they entice you to turn the page and keep telling it. The following top 5 tattoo fails should have never made it past the rough draft of the design process. Ever. These are just a few small examples of what can happen when you fail to think before you ink. Don't be left with body art that needs to be removed or covered. Be smart and plan your design with diligence and find an artist that can bring a tasteful and well thought design to life. Your body deserves a thoughtful and professional tattoo.

1. Slot Machines

TRF-Mr. Hyde @ Flickr
Inserting a coin into the slot is a golden choice for anyone living La Vida Loca in places like Las Vegas, rolling high and gambling away the nights. If you truly have a gambling spirit, a tattoo of this genre may make sense. There's lots of lucky casino and jackpot themed tattoo designs but this is not one of them.

2. Fashion Brands

Image courtesy Paul H. @ Flickr
Fashion brands are a tattoo don't! If you must wear a logo, then spend your money on the clothing or the bags, not on permanent body art. This Louis Vuitton print, while classic and stately in design, just doesn't work on anything but waterproof canvas.

3. Car Brands

Put it this way, unless you invented the wheel, try not to wear the tattoo. This Honda brand tattoo is old and faded, but still holds some sentimental value, as most Hondas do. Placed in such a prominent area, this tattoo could be worse. It really could. It could be a Pontiac, or a Saturn and the list could go on. Think twice before you get any sort of name tattoo.

4. Name Tattoos

Inage courtesy teamjimmyjoe

Name tattoos are also a bit of a risk, so why keep making them repeatedly multiple times across your body? This guy obviously likes to go by the name Mr. Ice, and he's even bone-chilling ready to prove it to ya. But who cares really? Do you?

5. Face Tattoos

Let's face it. Nobody really knows what this tattoo is supposed to mean. It looks like maybe this guy is into metaphysical beings, but I'm not so sure. It could be an alien life form, or a simple depiction of the human body in a natural and relaxed state. Either way, he shall live the rest of his life with people squinting, tilting their heads in disbelief with their mouths opened, first in amazement and then in concern, rather than checking out his unique green eyes. Epic fail. Why on earth did this man tattoo this design on his face?

Spiritual Tattoos
Apr 28th 2013, 11:11

Do you want to extend your faith into your body art? Wearing symbols that represent what is sacred can connect your mind, body and spirit. Spiritual tattoos may include Middle Eastern symbols, mystical designs and religious depictions. Which spiritual tattoo is best for you? Take a look at the many ways you can honor your path and spirit.

Types of Spiritual Tattoos

Koi Fish Koi fish are a beautiful example of a spiritual tattoo. Empowering and representing inner strength, the Koi swim upstream battling life's currents. Honored within the Japanese culture, an old fable tells that the Koi tried to climb up the walls in the Yellow River and up to the dragon's gate, where if successful, they would evolve into a dragon. Life is a journey in attaining spirituality, and a koi fish tattoo can reveal your belief in overcoming obstacles amongst the way and encourage your perseverance.

Crosses Whether you opt for a Christian or a Celtic depiction, crosses are affirmations of faith. The Celtic variations represent heritage, as in Saint Luke's Cross. The Egyptian Ankh represents both fertility and life. Christian crosses convey Christ's resurrection, whereas the Crucifix symbolizes Jesus' bound body on the trunk of the cross. There are also gothic crosses that are worn mostly as a fashion statement, popular amongst both men and women and often paired with wings or verse designs.

Buddhist Symbols If you are on the path of enlightenment and compassion, you may seek the truth of many Buddhist symbols which include the lotus flower, the statue of the Buddha, the Bodhi tree, the Wheel of the Law, Buddha's footprints and other cosmic teachings of cause, effect and rebirth.

Butterflies Butterflies make a perfect insect tattoo that also works as a spiritual design. The evolution of the caterpillar into a butterfly represents change and transition. From the bright orange Monarch to Swallowtails, you can study all different species of butterflies and find the wings you favor, there are over 15,000 butterflies to choose from, all who made the journey from caterpillar.

Gods and Goddesses If you want to pay homage to the Gods and Goddesses of old, such as Zeus or Thor or the Sacred Mother, try looking in any Wiccan or metaphysical bookstores for plenty of design inspiration. Greek or Viking mythology can also serve as a muse depending on your preference. Hindu Goddesses include Sri Lakshmi, who represents prosperity and humanity and the greater good. The Ganesha is on of the most worshipped of all deities and is certainly a favorite for a Hindu inspired tattoo. Consider a back piece for a goddess tattoo and read all about henna and Mehndi here for temporary, yet spiritual body painting.

Native American Native American spiritual totem animals such as the eagle and symbols like the dream catcher and even feather tattoos can capture the spirit of the natives. Dennis Avner, aka "Stalking Cat" felt a deep spiritual connection to his native spirit as he transformed himself into his cat-life persona.

Verse and Script Verse and script tattoos are a poetic and romantic choice for a spiritual tattoo, especially if you favor writings. For these designs, spend some time looking at fonts. Cursive and stylized handwriting can really change the way your verse tattoo looks. Remember verse and phrase tattoos have to be of decent size so trust your artist's recommendations. Examples of spiritual verse tattoos may include Believe, Hope, Faith, Love, Peace, Journey, Joy, Trust, and other affirmations.

Fantasy and Nature For some, a spiritual tattoo may take on a fantastical or nature representation. Other worldly creatures or fairies, and even angel wings may be your choice. Tree tattoos, such as the Cherry Blossom and other celestial moon and star depictions can also be chosen. For fantastical design ideas, really spend some time choosing your artist. You're likely not going to select a flash design for a fantastical scene tattoo. Fine arts and mythology would be a better start to look for in the background of your tattoo artist.

Zodiac Tattoos For some, no spiritual connection is complete without some astrological association. If you study your zodiac sign and relate to the traits and personality of your astrological symbol, you may choose a zodiac representation for your spiritual tattoo. For a few ideas, be sure to read Gemini tattoos and Cancer tattoos here.

Spiritual Tattoos can really help connect your mind body and spirit. Revealing your beliefs through body art can further affirm your faith.

Piercing - Gun vs. Needle
Apr 27th 2013, 11:11

Needless to say, use of the needle for piercings is less painful, less traumatic, and much safer to the customer. How does this apply to piercings on children? As a concerned mother of two girls, I asked a few professional piercists their opinion. Even I did not realize that in many states it is allowable for children to be pierced in a professional studio. Although the age of consent is much higher for tattoos, most children can get their ears pierced professionally as long as a parent or guardian is present and signs the paperwork.

Gege, a professional tattoo and piercing artist had to say this in answer to my question; "At the shop we won't pierce a baby, but if the child is like 6 and over and the piercer is VERY quick, the child only cries for a minute or two. I pierced my sons ear at home with a needle because I have two set-ups for side jobs. He cried for one minute until he figured out it didn't hurt. I think kids are geared up that it's a needle and it will hurt".

What if you don't have a piercing studio near you? It has been suggested that sometimes even physicians have been known to be skilled in piercing. In fact, some of them will pierce adults as well as children and some women feel more comfortable going to their doctor for more intimate piercings than to a stranger in a piercing shop. Discuss this with your local family doctor. If they don't personally do piercings, there might be one in your area that does.

Unfortunately, not all states allow minors to be pierced, even with parental consent. So, what should a parent do if they are faced with this situation? The best thing you can do is to drive to an area where you can legally pierce them correctly, or simply wait until they are of age. It's sad that it is perfectly OK to bring your children to a department store and have them unsafely pierced, but you can't let them be professionally pierced in a sterile environment. If you're an activist, it might even be prudent to write your local Congress members about this issue. Take a stand and get the gun banned!

Quotes and Phrases for Feather Tattoos
Apr 27th 2013, 11:11

Adding a simple verse to a feather tattoo is one way to add more beauty to an already elegant tattoo design. Script and font tattoos are demure yet make a statement. They can be a very wise choice if you want a tattoo, but aren't a fan of images or portrait style designs.

How to Apply Henna
Apr 27th 2013, 11:11

Once you have your henna paste ready to go â€" whether it be pre-made, homemade, in a cone, tube or bottle â€" you’re ready to start applying your design. This is the fun part! But it’s also quite time consuming. You’ll want to allow at least 1-2 hours for this part of the process. Rushing it will result in a pale stain that won’t last very long.

Most henna designs are applied freehand â€" you can use a design as a reference, but it’s usually easiest to draw directly onto the skin with the henna paste. If you have a particularly difficult design or one that requires a certain amount of “perfection,” you can use a skin scribe to draw the design on first. Skin scribes are like a marker, usually only come in purple, and they are safe for use on the skin.

Conventional Piercing Guide - Ear - Conch & Conch Orbital

Conventional Piercing Guide
Ear - Conch & Conch Orbital

Conch

As with most ear piercings, the conch is is a cartilage pierce. Another nickname for this piercing is the "shell", both named after the way this part of the ear resembles the seashell bearing the same name.

A conch piercing is relatively simple to an experienced piercer. The trickiest part is getting matching conchs even, providing you decide to pierce both ears. Because of its secure location near the center of the outer ear, there is little to no chance of rejection or migration.

As with all cartilage piercings, the conch will be subject to soreness and infection if not well cared for. Learn more about general piercing aftercare on the Piercing TLC page.

Recommended Starter Jewelry: 12-16 gauge CBR

Estimated Healing Time: 2 - 12 months

Conch Orbital

The conch orbital piercing runs perpendicular to the standard conch piercing, and actually requires 2 holes to be pierced instead of just one. This allows the ring to "orbit" the ear's cartilage. Recommended jewerly and healing times remain the same.

blow out
Apr 27th 2013, 11:11

Definition: A tattoo term that refers to an error on the part of the artist when he/she goes too deep or holds the needle at too much of an angle. The result is a hazy or fuzzy (but lighter) shadow of ink either to one side or surrounding the actual line. This is usually the result of inexperience or irresponsible tattooing, although a jumpy customer can also sometimes be the cause.

If the shadow ends up on the outside of the design, there isn't much chance of having it fixed. The only way to really "fix" it is to have it properly covered up, which of course will alter the appearance of the tattoo. An experienced artist, however, can usually think of a suitable way to handle this.

Frenum Piercing Improves Sex
Apr 26th 2013, 11:11

"People get pierced for a variety of reasons ranging from entering a new relationship, expression of individuality, increased pleasure during sex to the ever popular "the devil made me do it". The following is my experience:

About 5 months ago, I was prescribed an anti-depressant medication which one of its' side effects was sexual dysfunction (decreased ability to orgasm). My Doctor assures me this is temporary until I complete my 9-month medication period. As I noticed a substantial decrease in the intensity of my orgasm occurring I remembered reading about how certain genital piercings can increase sensitivity and pleasure.

I discussed this with a piercer (rather embarassing) and she suggested a Frenum might be helpful. The skin under the head of penis is pierced and a straight barbell or other jewelry is inserted. The idea behind this is to improve sensitivity and ultimately gives more pleasure.

The actual piercing went smooth. First the area was cleaned and disinfected, then the entry and exit points carefully marked. This is important as people and their parts are not all created symmetrical. Forceps were used to pinch the two layers of skin together. When ready, Kryss the piercer, asked me to breathe deeply and on my third exhale she pierced me. I felt a bit of pain, but nothing unbearable like I expected. The barbell was inserted and the end ball screwed on and tightened. Nothing to it. I looked "kool" with it. Also received an aftercare kit, verbal and written instructions how to care for my new piece of steel.

Since that fateful day, I have got back to enjoying sex. The added sensitivity of the Frenum has definitely intensified my orgasms. Last week I got a second Frenum about 5/8" lower than the first. Hope I am not getting addicted to this as eventually I plan on adding several more to complete what is called a Frenum ladder.

I hope that you find this information interesting. Maybe a Frenum is what the Doctor should have prescribed to begin with and not the medication."

Top 8 Tattoo Magazines
Apr 26th 2013, 11:11

Tattoo magazines aren't cheap, so the last thing you want to do is spend several dollars on a zine that isn't worth it. Here's my picks for the best tat rags on the bookstore shelf.

Skin & Ink

Although you won't get a heaping helping of pictures in this periodical, you will get enough to satisfy your craving. Along with high quality photos, you will also be able to feed your mind with information and articles that deal with the historical and signifant aspects of body art in society. It's a perfect blend of eye candy and meaty material.

Tattoo Flash

All pictures, NO ADS, all color. If you want flash and tattoo pictures, you will not be disappointed. This magazine is huge and packed full of both photos and drawings. You'll occasionally find some light reading about a particular artist or collector, but for the most part it is all art.

Skin Art

Skin Art is a real "in your face" kind of magazine. The pictures are large, bold and colorful. They feature some excellent artists and are not afraid to showcase art on the dark or wild side. But you do have to shuffle through a lot of ads to get to the good stuff.

TATTOO

This magazine has been around for a long time and continues to meet the demands of its readers. They'll keep you up with who's who and what's hot, along with entertaining you with plenty of pictures and artist profiles.

Tattoo Savage

Wrapped in plastic and packaged like an adult magazine, you'd expect to find hard core modifications and pornographic photos. But it's actually put together very professionally and features some superb tattoo artistry. Some of the artwork may lean toward the bizarre side, but most issues I let my own kids look at.

Tattoo Revue

While this magazine has sometimes been guilty of putting lousy art on their front cover just because the model was attractive, it's still a pretty good publication. With more color photos and convention coverage, it's an enjoyable publication to browse and read. Not a lot of substantial information or content, but good pictures and quality art.

International Tattoo Art

Although this magazine is actually published right here in the U.S.A., it reaches out and gets a much more global feel of body art. You'll read about conventions overseas and all the wonderful artists on opposite ends of the Earth. The only problem with this magazine is their recent decision to take it upon themselves to censor their magazine by covering nipples and genitals of the collectors and the art.

Tattoos For Women

Although this isn't a really dynamic magazine for it's content or pictures, I had to include it in my top picks list. The body art world is so male-dominated, I really appreciate the effort that goes into making this magazine just for women. The pictures are mostly submissions, so the photo quality is sometimes lacking, but the models and the art are as real as life. I'd call this the most "down to earth" body art publication.

Male Genital: Hafada/Scrotum

The scrotum piercing has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that the scrotum can pretty much be pierced anywhere and is relatively painless due to the thin elasticity of the skin. The disadvantages are that the location and placement of the piercings can be irritated easily and make the healing process difficult. Natural perspiration and lack of ventilation can suffocate the piercing and make it difficult to heal. Scrotum piercing placement (depth) is very critical, as the sac cannot be penetrated or it could cause severe infection.

Shaving the scrotum can be helpful in aiding the healing process, but care should be taken to ensure it is rinsed clean of any soap or shaving product afterward.

Recommended jewelry: 14 - 12 gauge captive bead ring.

Expected healing time: 2 - 4 months

Sexual limitations: Caution is advised, as rough sexual play can cause it to tear.

Apr 25th 2013, 04:00

In an effort to sway his daughters from getting tattooed in the future, United States President Barack Obama explained his plot on NBC's Today Show, April 24th, 2013

"What we've said to the girls is, 'If you guys ever decided you're going to get a tattoo, then mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo in the same place. And we'll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo.' And our thinking is that might dissuade them from thinking that somehow that's a good way to rebel." - NBC's Today Show

What are your thoughts? Should the girls (ages 14 and 11) insist Dad keep his promise when they come of age? There are plenty of cool family tattoo ideas. What are yours ? Leave a comment below and VOTE!

Does anyone else recall the 1981 thriller movie The Hand?

I do and it gave me nightmares, although like a train wreck I couldn't stop watching it and soon The Hand became one of my favorite childhood movies. Basically this guy is driving down the road with the windows down and a vehicle blows past and chops off his hand. Later if I remember correctly, the hand comes alive in the field that it landed, and creeps it way home to stalk and basically try to kill its rightful owner.

A Pound of Flesh is a silicone rubber hand designed to mimic the hand tattooing experience. Perfect for beginning artists and apprentices or for the trained professional who wants to master their tattooing techniques or display their finished art, just think of all the ways you can place these hands around the shop and creep people out while practicing your craft.

A Pound of Flesh silicone hands offer a better solution for budding artists to practice their skills without defacing real skin. Complete with lifelike tendons and knuckles, artists can practice on a more realistic medium. Are you considering a hand tattoo? You can read more about the challenges of hand tattoos here and better understand why practice is so important!

Visit APOF on Facebook and check out their artist submitted image gallery of hand tattoos here or to make a professional inquiry.
