Lobe Stretching Journal
May 31st 2012, 11:01

On March 4, I had my piercer stretch my lobes from 14 gauge to 10 gauge. Getting them stretched wasn't too difficult, but that might be because I have an exceptionally awesome piercer. The first part of the taper went in easily, and the cool gel (I think it was KY jelly) helped alleviate the minor "burning" sensation as the hole was stretched. But just as he reached the end of the taper on my left ear, it started to burn really bad. So, instead of just pushing it in to get it over with, he stopped and left the taper in my ear for about 30 seconds to let the pain settle down and allow me to catch my breath. Then the jewelry went in and the burning stopped and I've had no trouble with that ear.

My right ear, however, gave me a little more trouble. He was only half way through with the taper when it started hurting really bad. He again stopped pushing and this time let it sit for about 60 seconds until I told him I was ready for him to continue. We just chit-chatted a bit which helped calm me down and then the final push and jewelry insertion wasn't too bad. Unfortunately, though, this particular ear has been giving me trouble ever since. The healing isn't going quite as well as with the other one and I'm to blame more than anything because I don't do the sea salt soaks as often as I should and I know I manage to get hair gel and hairspray on the piercing every morning even though I try to be careful.

It is getting better though. I bought a pair of really beautiful 6 gauge gem plugs from Tribalectic for my next stretch, and I can't wait to see them in. But I'm probably going to have to wait at least another couple of weeks, and try to be better about doing my sea salt soaks and not getting hair styling stuff on my ear.

It should be noted that Billy, my piercer, warned me ahead of time that stretching 2 gauges at a time is a big jump and that it would be a lot easier to just go one gauge each time. But, I think I'll continue 2 at a time at least until they start getting really big. My eventual goal is 00g so I'm not going super-huge. Soft lobe tissue stretches a lot more easily than cartilage. If I was stretching cartilage, there is no way I'd be stretching that much at a time.

I've contemplated this stretching for over 5 years now and finally decided to go through with it. Not only do I really like the way it looks, but I also feel that I am more qualified to write about something here if I have personally experienced it. So, I will share my stretching experience with everyone here and hope that I am able to help someone else contemplating it or in the process of stretching.

nude tattoo Sometimes you just have to give people what they want.

After going through the ongoing internal seach strings it has been brought to my attention once again that many of my readers are merely not satisfied with the ideas and pictures of Pin-Up girl tattoos.

Instead, many of you want the real deal, as in pics of nude girls with tattoos.

For that very reason, I'd like to direct you to a site called Suicide Girls. For a small monthly fee you can register, check out the beautiful gals and even submit your own body art for a chance at becoming a featured Suicide Girl.

Color Portrait Tattoo - Memorial to Nephew Who Died From Drug Overdose

Artist: Nikko - [link url=http://www.ignitiontattoo.com]Ignition Tattoo[/link] - Apple Valley, California

Collector: Bob Weisz

Doing realistic looking portrait tattoos is a skill. Not a lot of tattoo artists can really pull them off. Doing realistic looking portrait tattoos in color is a gift. Even some of the best portrait artists in the world won't touch color because it can make a great tattoo suddenly look fake or cartoonish. That is not the case with Nikko at Ignition Tattoo in Apple Valley, California. Nikko not only does some of the best portraiture in the business, but he does a lot of them in color like this one here. His gallery is really something to behold. [p] The owner of this tattoo is my favorite collector, Bob Weisz. Bob has extensive tattoo work that he has traveled all over the country for, settling for nothing but the best for each and every one of his tattoos. Unfortunately, Bob - who usually opts for wildlife tattoos - was in search for the perfect portrait artist for this tattoo to memorialize his nephew, Brian, who died of a drug overdose in September of 2006. Bob is understandably saddened by the loss of his nephew, but wanted to use this as an opportunity to spread awareness about the dangers of drug use. Please visit the [link url=http://alcoholism.about.com/od/sa/Drug_Abuse_Information.htm]drug abuse information page[/link] if you or someone you know are suffering from an addiction. Don't become a statistic - or a tattoo on someone's arm.

Who's the Best Tattoo Artist?
May 28th 2012, 11:02

Question: Who Is the Best Tattoo Artist in the Country/World?

Who is the best tattoo artist? A question that gets asked a lot. Is there really a 'best artist'? Can that really be defined? What to look for, when you are looking for the 'best artist' for your tattoo.

Answer: I actually get asked this question a lot - who I think is the best tattoo artist. I have a lot of artists that I really like, respect and admire. Several of those artists are highlighted on this site as featured artists. But even I can't narrow it down to one particular artist. If I thought one artist was the best, I would go to them for all of my ink, right? But I don't, because I choose the artist for each tattoo based on the type of tattoo I'm planning and the particular skills of each artist.

Every artist has their own specialty - some artists are best at portraits, some dominate in old school style, some are known for their macabre masterpieces and others are best at Celtic designs. Then it also comes down to finding an artist that you personally click with - someone you feel comfortable with, someone who translates your vision properly, and someone that you can see yourself spending a few hours or more with while getting your tattoo.

I can't tell someone who would be the best artist for them. I have my own personal favorites, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are the best artist for someone else. Take the time to interview potential artists and find out what their specialties are. Make sure you know what you want and find the artist you feel best suits your needs. Be willing to pay for quality, be willing to travel if necessary, and don't be afraid to walk away at any point from someone you don't feel 100% comfortable with.

Coming Straight from East L.A.: Tattoo Nation Movie October 2012
May 25th 2012, 13:12

tattoolan It's movie time folks. Get your popcorn, super sized soda, any bags of candy that you snuck in from the discount store and get ready to see tattoos on the big screen.

This is not reality TV it is actually reality, and we're headed to East L.A. to relive the history of tattoos. No, Cheech will not be there and neither will Chong, but hey, Danny Trejo, Ed Hardy and Mark Mahoney are in; so it's all good.

Tattoo Nation Movie will premiere in the United States October 2012. You can LIKE their Facebook page here and check back for updates. For now, submit your own black and grey tattoo pictures to keep the conversation going.

Tattoo Nation Movie follows three pioneering artists; Jack Rudy, Charlie Cartwright and Freddie Negret as they revolutionize and change the world of tattooing with their realistic single needle style.

Straight from their Chicano tattoo shops, some may say the world of black and grey tattoos were born in East L.A.

Swimming with a New Tattoo
May 25th 2012, 11:17

Question: How Long Do I Have to Wait To Go Swimming After Getting a Tattoo?

Answer: Tattoos should be allowed to heal for a minimum of 2 weeks - until all flaking and peeling is finished and all scabs have fallen off. Even then, you're taking a risk getting in a chemically treated pool or bacteria-infested pond or lake, especially if you stay for an extended period of time. A tattoo is not considered fully healed until a new layer of protective skin has grown over it - this process usually takes about 3 months. Until then, your tattoo is most vulnerable to all elements - bacteria, sun, chemicals, pollution, etc. This is why getting a tattoo during the summer is not recommended, especially for swimmers and beach bunnies! If you've already got the tattoo, all I can really recommend now is stay out of the pool for at least 2 weeks and then keep your swimming to a minimum if you absolutely must go, and make sure you clean your tattoo thorougly after getting out of the water. If you can hold out for the full 3 month perdiod, you'll be doing your new tattoo a great service and I guarantee that it will have been worth the sacrifice.

5 Sexy Tattoo Spots for Men
May 24th 2012, 11:02

These 5 sexy tattoo spots for men are sure to leave their memorable mark on anyone lucky enough to see your skin.

Tattoo placement is just as important as design selection yet many people turn their heads and roll up their sleeves opting for traditional tattoo locations.

Sure, armbands are classic and bicep tats are tough, but why not explore a few more suggestive parts of your body? Painful perhaps? Consider it pleasure. Your body has definition that begs for attention. Let's take a peek; have a seat and unbutton.

1. Chest

Cc Image JohnONolan @ Flickr

There's a basic rule for chest tattoos; make them grand. While classic design tattoos for this broad spot include hearts, old school images and banners, you can pretty much ink whatever you want on your chest. Think of something massive and masculine like a ship, a crest or a portrait design. Be bold and opt for a tribal tattoo or show off your wild side with an animal sure to bring out the beast in you. This spot is easy to cover up, just throw on your shirt and get ready for wild moments of tearing it off.

2. Hip

Cc Image (((okvlt@Flickr)
The lower hip is a suggestive area that hits quite close to home. A small tattoo can fit well in this area, making it a secretive and erotic spot to ink. Lovers names, personal oaths and symbols are befit for this location. Consider black ink tattoos, crosses and small astrological symbols for sexy design inspirations. If you made her a promise you can wear it here in the form of a Claddagh or scripted verse. If you play for the same team you can display your pride with a rainbow tattoo or the Greek Lambda symbol signifying your own liberation. This tattoo is for certain eyes only, so go ahead and spill a few secrets.

3. Back

CC Image my tat_2s@Flickr

If you're ready for a sprawling tattoo design your back is where it's at. This tattoo spot is perfect for the guy who likes to take off his shirt, you know, on the beach or during an active run outdoors. Back tattoos are the key for a creative canvas and pretty much allow for endless design inspiration. Buildings, fantastical or horror scenes can make up some dark play on your back whereas mythical Phoenix and spiritual sun designs create a colorful canvas. Start small or add to your mural over the years. Back tattoos will need lots of sunblock, so lube up or cover up to keep your ink bold.

4. Leg

CC Image Blakespot@Flickr
Go ahead and show off your build with a thigh tattoo sure to make her cringe with delight. Leg tattoos can build upon your muscular frame, so hit the gym and then your artist's chair for a piece that's well placed on your upper thigh. For something powerful, thrust a fiery dragon on your leg or opt for a tribal piece. For lower calf locations, consider ships, flags, portraits and pinups designs that can wrap around or stand alone.

5. Penis

CC Image Roy Sinai @ Flickr
You put a tattoo where? Oh, right there. An in-between or around the scene suggestively placed genital tattoo flames with sex appeal. Hot ideas for this erotic spot include designs that incorporate a "trunk" theme such as an elephant or even a snake or sword design. This hypersensitive area is off-limits for many tattoo artists so you'll need to shop around and find a skilled and trusted professional for your genital tattoo. Of course, make sure it heals properly before it comes out to, you know, play. When paired with a Apadravya penis piercing, a genital tattoo can be the ultimate companion for Kama Sutra pleasure. Now go get inked somewhere sexy.

Cross Tattoos
May 23rd 2012, 11:02

Whether for religious, spiritual or fashionable purpose, cross tattoos remain one of the most popular symbols for both men and women.

This ancient symbol of both Mother and Father nature (depicted in the vertical and horizontal line) can represent many things, including the rising and setting of the sun as well as life and death.

It was the cross itself that was inked on the body of Otzi the Iceman, who roamed the earth around 3300 BCE.

While we'll never know what significance the cross bore during the Ice Age, the symbol itself has been around for quite some time and that makes it a significant symbol in history.

For many reasons besides faith alone, the cross has significance that ranges from spiritual to cultural beliefs.

What has become widely recognized as a symbol of the Christian faith, there are hundreds of different cross styles to choose from.

If you're considering a cross tattoo think ahead what sort of placement ideas may fit best. Due to their very sensitive and often very personal nature, a cross tattoo makes sense when it's placed in a visible location where you can actually see it and feel the comfort and peace in its presence.

Consider wrist, chest. arm and ankle tattoos for your cross and you're certain to feel a bit more connected to your faith or spirituality.

Types of Cross Tattoos

  • Christian Cross Tattoos
  • The most popular of cross tattoos, the Christian cross represents the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • Celtic Crosses
  • Introduced by Saint Patrick and also known as "Saint Luke's Cross", Celtic crosses are beautiful and ornate and are depicted as a standard cross with a circle around the center. The circle is believed to represent heaven, earth and eternal love.
  • Egyptian Ankh
  • Representing fertility and life, the Ankh pre-dates the Christian cross and is depicted as a traditional cross with a loop at the top.
  • Crucifix
  • The crucifix is a very prominent in the Catholic, Eastern Catholic and Orthodox churches and symbolizes the body of Jesus Christ being crucified on the cross.

    Choosing a Cross Tattoo

While many crosses bear significant Christian or religious beliefs, others offer nothing more than an individual expression of style. Gothic and Western rhinestone-enhanced cross designs are fancy takes on the cross and are worn merely for their fashionable statement.

Before you ink this ancient symbol, determine what significance a cross bears to you. The cross can be added to many tattoo designs to offer memorial peace and life to your body art; so plan this holy piece carefully.

Job Seeking With Body Art
May 22nd 2012, 11:02

The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew.â€" Abraham Lincoln

The current economic situation of the world can very well be called a “stormy present.” Unemployment and poverty are at an all-time high, and even those who are fortunate enough to still have a job are feeling the sting of reduced wages. The amount of available jobs versus the amount of people desperately seeking work is a staggering ratio of unbalanced proportion.

Pride vs. Practicality
Unfortunately, that often means that people with body art who seek work often find their applications and resumes at the bottom of an employer’s pile. It’s still considered an undesirable trait in most industries and professions, and prejudicial stereotyping abounds. If you have tattoos, piercings, or any other visible modifications, you’ve got an automatic strike against you when it comes to impressing a potential future employer. As much as it pains me to say this, we have reached the point of the proverbial “desperate times” that call for “desperate measures.” This series of articles are designed to help you seek and find a job, but I’ll warn you right now that you’re not going to like some of it.

I applaud anyone who stands up and says, “I don’t care. I’m not covering my body art for anyone.” Well, I applaud them as long as they can pay their bills and take care of their families. However, if pride and stubbornness are preventing you from being able to do those things, then your priorities need to be examined. The fact of the matter is this: you need money to survive, and you need work to have money. If that means going against your natural inclinations and shunning your rebellious side for a few hours a day, so be it. It’s time to “think anew and act anew.”

But there’s more to finding a job than just covering up your body art. In this job seeking series, I’m going to do my best to show you what your options are and how to make the most of them.

Body Art Friendly Employers

The good news is that more and more companies are shedding the old perceptions about body art and are changing their policies to at least allow some visible tattoos and/or piercings as long as they meet a certain criteria. As long as you’re not looking for a corporate position, you may be able to find a part or full-time job at one of these companies. So, the first thing you need to know is what career fields and companies are body art friendly. (Next Page)

Memorial Day Tribute and Battle Tattoo Ideas from Shakespeare
May 20th 2012, 13:11

memorial tattoo There are some things that should always be honored. That is your parents, your spouse and the men and women that have served to protect the safety and freedom of our country.

Memorial Day is the perfect time to remember a fallen brother or loved one that has given all.

Tribute and memorial tattoo ideas are endless. From dog tags, old school eagles, to emblems and Medals of Honor, you can depict your emotion and honor the military servicemen in so many ways.

Consider verses such as St. Crispin's Day Speech from William Shakespeare's Henry V:

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile," instead of a traditional military design.

Get inspired for battle tattoos and read some stirring literature and tattoo something that's just a bit deeper.

"If we are marked to die, we are enow to To do our country loss, and if to live, The fewer men, the greater share of honor."- William Shakespeare, Henry V

Salute!

Tattoo Artist Vents
May 20th 2012, 11:02

Note From Karen: When a tattoo artist makes a mistake, it becomes headline news. And yet, most tattoo artists deal with a lot of really annoying clients on a daily basis and no one ever pays attention. Every now and then, an artist gets to the point where they have taken as much as they can handle and they have to vent about the crap they are sick of putting up with. And yet, in between the curse words and yelling, there are words of wisdom that all of us should take to heart. Have a little respect for your artist and try to keep in mind that they are human beings, not slaves or robots. Here are some pearls of wisdom from a tattoo artist on the edge.

"Due to the recent surge of complete fu**ing morons getting tattooed by me (I stress, this isn't aimed at all of my customers; I still get to do great tattoos on a great bunch of folks, you guys who I like know who you are), I've decided to post my latest blog.

I don't know what your problem is where you think that just because you want a tattoo right that minute, that we should just drop everything we're doing, decide what you want, draw something up for you on a whim with no input from you, blow off our appointments to get you in for this mystery tattoo, be able to do a nice tattoo on you no matter how much you jump around regardless of how many times I tell you to stop, then you get an attitude with me because I'm the first person to actually tell you that you're doing something wrong by moving around as much as you are, then you don't even give me the respect to follow my aftercare instructions because your &*%# of a boyfriend told you not to because his buddy who does it out of his sh***y ass roach infested apartment knows how to take care of tattoos. I want to do the best tattoo I can, but it takes 2 to get it to look good. I do the tattooing part, but you have to do the part about actually thinking about what you want first of all, and sitting the f*** still. If you can't do your parts, then it tells me that you don't give a sh**, and if you don't give a sh**, why should I?

Unfortunately, I have to give a sh** because if that tattoo comes out all f***ed up, you're not actually going to admit to your friends that you moved around like you were in the back of a pickup truck traveling at high speeds through the woods. Hell no, you're just going to say that the guy at the Pisst Fish f***ed it all up.

So because of these people, I've decided to put up a somewhat sarcastic but partially true list of rules of conduct if you're interested in getting tattooed by me:

1. Make sure you have eaten within 4 hours prior to your tattoo. I will not tattoo you on an empty stomach.

2. Do NOT consume any alcoholic beverages within the same day prior to getting your tattoo. I will not tattoo you if I smell alcohol on you. The same goes for narcotics.

3. Dress appropriately for your tattoo. I cannot tattoo through clothing, and many times it gets in the way if it's too close to the tattoo.

4. Please be realistic on your expectations of a tattoo. I cannot do a quality tattoo on a client that moves excessively, is extremely sensitive to the touch, or is overly nervous.

5. You must be at least 18 years of age to receive a tattoo from me. This also means you have to behave like a grownup when getting tattooed by me. You will be allowed to have 1 person join you for the procedure to keep you company, and that is all. You don't need an entourage, and the one companion doesn't need to hold your hand. This is not the time to be a Drama Queen, so don't act like one. The better you behave yourself, the better the experience is going to be for you.

6. All cell phones must be turned off during the procedure, including anyone accompanying you.

7. No food is allowed in the tattoo area, but a contained drink with a cap is.

8. Do not bring your children in the shop, and do not leave them in the car. If you have children, you need to get a babysitter during your tattoo.

9. If you do not speak English, bring a translator. I only speak English.

10. If you don't know what you want tattooed, I will not set up an appointment with you until you do. It's not my job to decide what you should get tattooed. If you can't even do the preliminary thinking part about getting tattooed, you're not ready to get a tattoo.

11. Think about what you're getting tattooed. They are permanent, and therefore should be thought about thoroughly. Don't get tattoos of images just because other people have done it. Do a little bit of thinking first.

12. Please keep in mind, not only have I seen Miami Ink, but I get asked several times a day if I have. It isn't necessary to ask me if I've seen it.

13. Please stop asking to get tattoos of other peoples’ tattoos. I won't do it in respect to both the artist and the client wearing the original. This also applies to pictures in my portfolio. Those tattoos already belong to someone.

14. Please follow your aftercare procedure accurately. If you lose your aftercare sheet given to you, you need to come back and get another one. Do NOT ask your friends or anyone else how to take care of your tattoo.

15. If you are sick, re-schedule your appointment. I don't want to bring your germs and other crap home to my family making them suffer because of your lack of common sense selfishness, or lack of respect for others."

3D Tattoo App Review
May 20th 2012, 11:02

The Bottom Line

Not entirely user friendly, especially for those who aren't web-savvy, but this is a great application with a lot of potential once you figure it out. It's always a good idea to try a temporary version of a tattoo before you take the plunge, and this is one way to see yourself as others would see you and that different perspective is really useful.

Pros

  • Offers several options, most of which are free
  • Even the paid options are very reasonable
  • Avatar creator's ability was highly impressive
  • You can log in directly through your Facebook account

Cons

  • Not the most user friendly for those who aren't web/app savvy
  • Not many pre-loaded tattoo options available
  • Preloaded images sometimes just show blank pages

Description

  • This is a newly developed program so minor glitches are bound to happen from time to time, but it seems pretty reliable.
  • Uses the Evolver Platform and is a web-based application so there's no software to load on your computer.
  • Images can be printed or shared once the avatar has been created.

Guide Review - Web Application Review - 3D Tattoo Preview by Obsessive Ink

When I first heard about the Obsessive Ink 3D tattoo preview application, I knew I had to try it out. It just so happens that I've been working on a facial tattoo design and had actually been wishing that I had access to something just like this. So, I headed over to www.obsessiveink.com to give it a try.

Once you've signed up, you can create an avatar in your likeness. There's two different ways in which you can do this - either use their program to create a face and body similar to your own, or upload a photo of yourself and allow it to create an avatar for you based on your picture. I decided to go the picture route, wanting to test the program for accuracy. I used my camera phone and purposely uploaded a somewhat blurry, not-so-hot image that still fit their guidelines, since I know most people aren't going to have fancy cameras to take sharp images with; I wanted to see just how well the program would adapt. I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the results - I think I have a pretty good idea of what I would look like if I were bald now, and I plan to never shave my head.

Once you have your likeness created, then you can use it to add tattoos and see how they look. Again you have two options - use one of the images they already have available in the application (a very limited selection) or upload an image of your own. There is a fee involved for this option, but it's only $1.99 to upload your own image and it gives you a lot more flexibility when it comes to designing something personal. Again, wanting to test the program's abilities and since I was creating something based on a tattoo I actually want, I chose to upload a drawing that I had done.

This is where I have to say that the program became a little less user friendly. It took me several trips around in circles before I finally figured out how to upload and then add my design to my avatar, which is why I took this short video of how to use the program once I figured it out. In my case, my scan wasn't the greatest so some of the paper surrounding the drawing was included in the final image, but all in all I was pretty impressed with the results and I can see a lot of potential in this application. I'd love it if they'd add the ability to "pierce" your avatar as well - I've been thinking of a septum ring and would love to see beforehand what my (bald) self would look like with one.
