Lost or Swallowed Jewelry
Jan 31st 2013, 11:16

Although most body piercing jewelry â€" especially CBRs and barbells â€" are usually pretty secure, it’s always possible for them to come loose. You should give your barbells a little twist every few days just to make sure they’re holding tight. CBRs should be checked occasionally to ensure that the bead is still held snugly in place.

But, if you should happen to lose the ball off of your CBR or the end off your barbell, don’t panic. Since some piercings, especially new ones, can close up quickly, it’s important that you don’t remove the jewelry. Instead, you need to find a way to temporarily hold it in place until you can get to a piercing shop and have it fixed.

Lost CBR Bead
CBRs usually tend to stay in place pretty well even if the ball is missing. If you have to wait a couple of days before you can get a replacement bead for it and you’re afraid the ring may fall out, wrap a piece of tape around the open section to close it up. This is not a healthy long-term solution, but you’ll be fine for a day or two until you can replace the bead.

If the CBR is in your mouth, take a small piece of chewed gum or dental wax and mold it to fit in place of the bead. Keep in mind that sugary gum kept constantly in your mouth isn’t good for your teeth; sugar-free gum would be better. Spicy gum like cinnamon or mint might burn against oral tissue, so go with something that isn’t harsh. And don’t go more than a day like this â€" get to the piercing shop as soon as you can.

Lost Barbell End
If you lose the ball end off of a barbell, you’ve got a good chance that the bar will manage to wriggle its way out quickly, so wad up a piece of chewed gum or dental wax and stick it over the end. Again, not a healthy long-term solution but should be sufficient to hold the jewelry in place for a day or so until you can get to the shop and have it repaired.

Whole Jewelry Fell Out
If the entire ring or barbell fell out and you’re afraid the piercing will close up on you before you can get to the piercing shop, you can try to re-insert the jewelry. If your piercing is healed, this shouldn’t be a problem at all. If it’s new, the tissue inside the fistula may still be raw and can easily be damaged by a misaligned insertion. You need to be very carefulâ€"move slowly and follow the exact angle of the original piercing. If you encounter any resistance, stop! You can realign the jewelry and try again, but don’t force it.

If you can’t get the jewelry back in, don’t try shoving anything else in there to hold it open. Just keep the open piercing as clean as possible (so you don’t introduce harmful bacteria inside the fistula) and get to the piercing shop as soon as possible. Even if the hole closes up a little bit, your piercer can sometimes use a taper to gently pry it back open so you don’t lose the piercing. Worst case scenario is that it closes up and you have to wait and have it repierced.

Swallowed Jewelry
If you have an oral piercing and something comes loose, it’s possible to accidentally swallow part or all of the jewelry. If you just swallow the bead from a CBR or a ball end off a barbell, which are both about the size of a pea, I wouldn’t worry too much. They are mostly smooth except for the tiny screw end on an internally threaded bar-ball, which doesn’t pose much problem and usually passes without incident.

Swallowing a whole CBR, depending on the size, may or may not cause a problem. Since the bead has to be missing to have swallowed it in the first place, then there is a small opening that could, theoretically, get caught on things on the way through the digestive system. But, since the edges are smooth and most of it is circular, it should pass without posing a risk of puncturing anything. If it’s too large to pass through the more narrow passageways of the digestive system, though, it could become lodged and create an obstruction.

Swallowing a barbell is a little more risky, and still most barbells pass through the system without incident. But because it’s longer and will have at least one small end that could poke through soft tissue, it is more likely to create a problem on the way through the digestive system than other types of body jewelry.

If you feel like you’re choking, gagging or can’t breathe, you need help to dislodge the jewelry immediately. If no one is around, you’ll have to perform the Heimlich on yourself. Now is a good time to learn how to do that, before you find yourself in danger.

Danger Signs
It may not be pleasant, but the only way you’re going to know for sure if the jewelry has passed through your body is to check your bowel movements. But unless you plan to go sifting through stool for a week, which may be necessary if you’re really worried, it’s very possible that you won’t see it.

If at any point â€" even a week after swallowing the object â€" you feel any pain or tenderness anywhere along the digestive line, have a fever, bleeding, or vomiting, get to the emergency room. If you’re a teen whose parents didn’t even know you had a piercing, this is no time to worry about getting in trouble. Internal damage can kill you.

How To Survive Your First Tattoo

How To Survive Your First Tattoo

Getting your first tattoo can be pretty scary. Here are some hints on how to make it a little easier on your nerves and to prepare yourself to make it a good experience.

Difficulty Level: Average      Time Required: N/A

Here's How:
  1. Pick a day you have plenty of time and don't have to rush, to keep stress down.
  2. Be confident in your artists' abilities.
  3. Bring along a friend if you want, but don't bring your kids.
  4. Take along some reading material or music for distraction.
  5. Focus on something relaxing, like a picture or a thought.
  6. Suck on hard candies to keep blood-sugar level up.
  7. Take slow, deep breaths to calm your nerves.
  8. Think about how great your tattoo will look when it's done!
  9. Ask your artist for a break any time you need one.
  10. Ask questions if you are concerned about anything your artist is doing.
  11. If it is painful, try not to watch. Sometimes that makes it hurt more than it really does.
Tips:
  1. Don't haggle price with your artist. That only shows disrespect and creates a bad relationship from the start. If your artist is annoyed, they may not be as gentle with you.
  2. You may, at any time, get up and walk away if you are not happy with your experience. Your artist is not in control, you are. If you believe they are not doing satisfactory work, do not let them continue.

Penis Tattoo FAQ
Jan 30th 2013, 11:16

While certainly not for every man, some guys are interested in a penis tattoo. This tattoo placement conjures up a variety of thoughts, images and a host of questions. Do you have to be erect during a penis tattoo? What are some design ideas? Never opt for a penis tattoo for your first tattoo, rather build up your pain tolerance and knowledge with the following facts and tips.

1. Why Men Tattoo Their Penis

Some guys tattoo their penis because it fits into their overall body modification theme. Others do it because it feels a little rebellious and they want to add that element to their body art. Choosing to tattoo the penis is highly individual. Some people may tattoo this area in part of a couples theme design, while others go it alone and just go crazy with a silly idea. The reason and design suggestions are endless, but the facts remain the same. Keep reading.

2. Finding an Artist

Finding a tattoo artist that will do a penis tattoo will be your first challenge. Due to the sensitive nature of this tattoo placement, not every artist will be willing to honor your request. Others may be glad to do it but will charge accordingly, meaning they may ask for more compensation than they would for a tattoo that's placed in a less intimate area. Remember, your artist has to feel comfortable performing the work and that burden may cost more than a tattoo placed on your bicep.

3. Pain Tolerance

Yes, a penis tattoo will hurt. Some men enjoy this part of the process and actually seek it out for this reason alone, as a form of a fetish. While others simply like to add an element of surprise to their manhood. As with all tattoos, pain is relative. Practicing breathing and relaxation techniques while focusing on something other than the needle is the best way to cope. You should never opt for a penis tattoo as your first tattoo, rather build up to this area once you know your personal level of pain tolerance.

4. Do I Need to be Erect?

There are no silly questions, especially when it comes to penis tattoos. Your artist will hold your penis taut, and it should not be erect, rather firmly held and stretched so that the artist has full control for proper needle placement. If you become aroused, worry not. Simply apologize and carry on and try to relax. Your tattoo artist should expect this occurrence due to the sensitive nature of the location.

5. Design Ideas

Tattoo designs should always be well thought out, particularly if placed on the genital area. Whimisical and funny penis tattoo ideas include a Hammerhead shark, a pencil, a mushroom, a wad of money to blow, colored flames, Pinnochio , or an arrow. More obvious animal tattoo choices for this area include fire-breathing and dangerous dragons, a sinful snake , or a grand elephant's trunk. Any sort of design that mimics the natural positioning of your anatomy will be fitting. If you have any genital body piercings, try to design an idea around your other modifications for added style. One of the most popular ideas is a lover's name tattoo. Whether to prove your commitment, or make right of a past wrong, think twice before you ink a name.

6. Full Disclosure

Finally, after you've scoured the facts, made the decision and had the work, what do you do? Show it off? Penis tattoos are not at all common, so you can expect anyone who sees it to have varied questions and reactions. Some partners may be sexually turned on, while others, not so much. If you're entering an intimate relationship and things have begun to head South, you may want to disclose your body art, or be prepared for anything. You may pleasantly find that a penis tattoo enhances your sex life as it unleashes the wild sides of both you, and your partner.

Do Tattoos Hurt?
Jan 30th 2013, 11:16

Question: Does Getting a Tattoo Hurt?

Answer: Pain is really relative. Everyone has a different tolerancy to pain. I'm not going to kid you, though - it does hurt. Just not that much. Some have compared it to a "hot scratching feeling". But, people would not be returning again and again for tattoo after tattoo if it hurt that bad! Most of us are not into pain, but the beauty of the tattoo and the pride associated with wearing it far outweighs a little pin-stick here and there. Why Minors Shouldn't Get Ta...
Jan 29th 2013, 11:16

The more popular and mainstream tattoos and piercings become, the more teenagers want them. The problem is, it's not legal for minors to get tattoos in many states. The other problem is, most parents don't go for the idea at all. This puts teens in a position where they feel they have to make a decision for themselves, and they go seeking someone to tattoo and/or pierce them without the consent of their parents. This is where things can go terribly wrong.

The fact is, any tattoo or piercing "artist" (I use that term very loosely) who is willing to break the law and disregard the wishes of parents in order to tattoo or pierce a minor is already proving they have no concern for their "client". How can you trust someone with your health and safety who is already a criminal? Do you really want to get a tattoo by some scum with a "gun" and some ink just because he he'll do it cheap and not tell your parents?

If you don't want to listen to me, listen to one of your own peers. "Lucky Star" is 17, and she felt compelled to share her story and explain why she has decided to wait until she is of legal age to get a tattoo.

Before I begin my tale of horror I have one thing to say. Wait ‘til your 18, because it'll be so much greater if you do. That's going to be your right of passage. Trust me.

I’m going to be 17 next Friday and its killing me that I'll have to wait just one more year to get a tat. I've been wanting tattoos since I was 10 - no joke. And I've already planned out the ones I want and where they’re going to be on my body. But I know when I'm finally able to have a professional put that beautiful piece of artwork on my body that I've craved for soooo long, the feeling will be so sweet. Ok enough of that on to my scary story.

At the beginning of June my friend met this guy at work who said he would tattoo us at his home because he was an apprentice and he had the tools to do so at his house. I was sooooo excited and so was my friend. So that weekend while we were driving over to his house I started thinking about all the things that have been said about tattoo artists who are willing to tattoo minors. I became torn...the "should I or shouldn't I?" began a battle in my head 'til we pulled into the guy's driveway. My friend turned to me and said "are you ready?" and I was like "No, I'm not. I'm not going to go through with this. I'm just going to wait till I'm 18." My friend then called me a pussy and we went into the guy’s house.

The house was disgusting and the bathroom was even worse, and that’s where the dude tattooed a hibiscus flower on my friend’s pelvic bone. I sat on the couch and cried my eyes out because I thought I blew my chance to get inked. Boy, was I wrong.

After not seeing my friend for 6 days I went to her place to return some clothes I borrowed from her. As soon as I walked into the house she grabbed me and ran to the bathroom and showed me this disgusting blob that was once her hibiscus flower tattoo. It had become infected and patchy.

She ended up having to go to the hospital because the infection got really bad and she didn't want to fess up to her mom that she had gotten a tat underage in some dude's bathroom. I had to explain to her mom at the hospital about what went down. My friend is doing much better now and we've both learned a good lesson.

This hasn't scared either of us from getting tattoos. It just taught us to wait till we're of legal age. Well, to all of you who are still reading I say thank you (lol)...and hope that you learned something from my experience.

Lucky Star's experience is just one of many where young people find themselves in a dangerous situation simply because they can't wait a few months or years to get tattooed or pierced legally. Is it really worth risking your life for? Is a piece of jewelry or a picture on your skin worth dying for? If you think it is, that is exactly why you are not mature enough to get it. Grow up and come back later.

Hair Coloring Guide - Special Effects Hair Dye
Jan 29th 2013, 11:16

Hair Coloring Guide (using Special Effects from Hot Topic)

Step 1: Getting Ready

Before you color, you will want to bleach your hair to get the best color results. Dark hair will not show up these colors nearly as well as light hair. Bleaching also dries the hair causing the color to take better. Check the Bleaching Guide for more details. To color, you will need one bottle of Special Effects hair color (your choice of color), a pair of protective gloves, a plastic bowl and an applicator brush. This color is EXTREMELY concentrated - only squeeze out about 1/4 of the bottle at a time so as not to waste any. There is no mixing required with Special Effects - just put some in a bowl and you're ready to go!

Step 2: Applying

Drape a towel around your neck (expect it to get ruined - don't use a good towel). You could do this yourself, but having a friend help you makes it a lot easier. Put the gloves on and start applying the color. Go as quickly as you can so it all covers evenly. At least with my hair, I found the areas right around my ears and around my hairline to be the most stubborn. There is plenty of color in that little bottle, so don't be afraid to use it. After you have completely colored the hair, just sit and wait for 15 minutes. You don't need to wear a heat cap or wait a long time - this stuff is so easy!

Step 3: Rinsing

This part is more difficult than it sounds. You WILL need a friend to do this for you if at all possible. One thing you will notice about this color is that it bleeds a lot. You will need to rinse for several minutes with warm water before the water will start running even slightly clear. A friend will be able to see this a lot easier than you. Keep rinsing until the water runs clear. Then shampoo your hair to get the last bits of color residue out of your hair. I had to shampoo twice to get the bubbles to stop turning pink. Don't worry though - as much color runs down the sink, you don't lose anything on your head!

Step 5: Finished!

After you have rinsed, shampooed and rinsed again, your hair is done. Towel dry (with a dark towel or one that you don't mind getting color on it). Then go look in the mirror and freak out! The first time I saw mine in the mirror I was in shock! Oh, in case you're wondering - this color here is called Cherry Bomb Red (by Special Effects). I got it at Hot Topic and you can order it online at hottopic.com or you can see if there is a Hot Topic store in your area. Special Effects comes in a huge range of colors.

Well, here is me with my Cherry Bomb Red! Actually I would call it more Cherry Bomb Pink than Red, but I love it! Some things to keep in mind are: Every time you rinse or wash your hair, it's going to bleed. Your hands will be pink if you use gel on your hair and rub it in with your hands. The color fades a little bit with each wash, and will last somewhere around 6 weeks. Don't wear good clothes or use good towels when washing or styling your hair.

Meanings of Tattoo Symbols 2
Jan 28th 2013, 11:18

Continuing our look at symbols and their meanings, this article will explore the symbolism behind cemetery tombs and gravestone symbols, Astrological signs and symbols of the Zodiac, and the meanings behind many popular flowers. As with the other pages in this series, each link will bring you to the best resources I have found online that illustrate and describe these symbols.

Cemetery Tombs/Gravestone Markings & Statues
I was actually surprised to find out that even gravestone etchings and statues have meanings behind them and are not just randomly selected. Although this may seem an odd set of symbols to include on a tattoo page, I thought many of these would also make beautiful memorial tattoos. When looking for something really special to honor a loved one that has passed on, these pages may prove highly inspirational.

  • Cemetery Symbols
Great photographic examples of many statues and carvings. Click on the photo for a larger picture, or scroll down the page for the symbolic meanings.
  • Tombstone Carvings, Symbols & Icons
Genealogy guide, Kimberly Powell, has even more links to different sources of tombstone symbolism.

Astrological/Zodiac Signs & Symbols
Many of us believe that the stars and our place in them can actually describe or affect our personality, our mood and our future. These symbols also make popular tattoos, so it's good to have a clear understanding of what they mean.

  • Astrological Symbols
About.com's Astrology guide has put together this excellent visual glossary to help you find the meanings of many astrological symbols.
  • Signs of the Zodiac
What do the stars mean to you? Find out with this handy chart that displays the different signs of the zodiac and what each one represents.
  • Sabian Symbols
Holistic Healing guide, Phylameana Desy, helps you find the best resources of all 360 degrees of the Zodiac.

Flower Symbolism
Even flowers can sometimes have certain meanings behind them depending on type and even color. Of course, as pointed out in part one of this article, sometimes a rose is just a rose. However, if you'd like to dig into the deeper symbology of popular flowers and herbs, these sites will help you out.

  • The Lotus Flower
About.com’s guide to Holistic Healing, Phylameana Desy, provides a wonderful database of links to explore the meaning of the lotus flower.
  • The Meaning of Flowers
Even flowers, plants and herbs can have their place in the world of symbolism. Did you know Aloe signifies wisdom and integrity? Or that a violet stands for modesty and simplicity? Find definitions and characteristics that accompany these many beauties.
  • The Meaning of Roses
Even more specific than flowers, this site divides roses by maturity and color, and shares the significance and symbolisms behind them as individuals or combined with other colors.

Henna Paste Recipe
Jan 28th 2013, 11:18

After using the pre-mixed henna paste in the tubes, I just wasn't happy with the results I was getting. I started reading up on henna paste recipes, and found out that they are about as abundant as chicken soup recipes! So, I started experimenting, and after a few failed attempts and some that came out OK but not wonderful, I tried one more time and came up with one that I was extremely happy with. I will share my recipe with you here if you'd like to give it a try, but feel free to be creative. There are a lot of different ingredients you can use to create nice, vibrant color results.

My Henna Paste Recipe

  1. Sift out enough henna to make about 1-1 and 1/4 cups dry, sifted henna powder.
  2. Take 2 packets of instant coffee singles (the ones that look like tea bags) and boil hard in about 1 and 1/2 cups of water until it boils down to about 3/4 of a cup of dark liquid.
  3. Mix just enough coffee into the powder to create a thick paste. The hot liquid will make the powder ball up a little, so be sure to mix it until it is well blended and smooth.Add about 2 tablespoons lemon juice; fresh is best.
  4. Add about 5 drops of Eucalyptus Oil.
  5. Add about 5 drops of Clove Oil.
This should make a thin paste, but you don't want it runny. If it is too runny, add a little more sifted henna powder. If its too thick, add a little more coffee, or plain water.

Allow to settle and cool for about 2 hours.

That's it! It's a great, simple recipe, and above is a picture of the results I got with it. This one was already five days old when I took the picture.

Note: I got an email from a reader who said this recipe was too large and wanted to know if it could be reduced. The above mix will make quite a large batch of henna, which is great if you plan on doing a lot. But, if you're just looking to make a little to try it or only do something small, the recipe can be halved or even quartered. The nice thing about henna paste is that it's not an exact science - thus the wide variations. Use these ingredients as a guide, but don't be afraid to experiment. You never know what you might come up with!

Storage: Left-over henna paste can stay fresh for about two weeks in the refrigerator, if it is tightly sealed. It can last two months or more in the freezer. Just warm it up a bit before you are ready to use it.

OK! So, now you've got the recipe. What next? The next article will discuss making cones for applying the henna paste.

Male Piercings and Sex
Jan 28th 2013, 11:18

For Your Partner's Pleasure
If you're a man and have considered getting a genital piercing for the purpose of pleasuring your partner, you may wonder which piercings provide the most stimulation or how one piercing may be preferred over another by your mate. This is perfectly normal, and frankly commendable considering that one's own pleasure is many times the primary concern when it comes to sex.

Unfortunately, there's no real cut-and-dry response as to which piercing may be the best choice. It can depend on several factors such as the gender of your partner, the nature of your sexual routine, whether or not you use prophylactics (condoms), and whether or not your partner is turned on by the idea of you being pierced. It also should be noted that sometimes it is advisable to remove genital piercings during sex, so the type of piercing you have may be a moot point during the sexual act itself.

Women have two major erogenous zones in the genital region - the clitoris and the elusive "G-spot". Any piercing that comes in contact with either of those areas may improve the stimulation felt there. However, that depends greatly on your technique and ability to stimulate those regions in the first place. A piercing doesn't suddenly turn you into a mad love-making genius. You've got to know what you're doing before you go adding extra hardware to your toolbelt.

If you have a male partner, a piercing that directly stimulates the anus or perineum will probably be the most pleasurable to them. However, since the use of a condom is strongly recommended during anal sex, that may affect how a piercing stimulates your partner.

For Your Pleasure
There's nothing wrong with wanting to get a little extra pleasure out of the sexual experience for yourself, too. If you're interested in getting a piercing that will provide you with more enjoyment, you will need to condsider your own preferences. Where are your erogenous zones? What do you find visually and physically erotic? Which piercing do you think would provide you with the most sexual gratification? It's a very personal decision, and not one anyone else can really help you make.

The best way to come to a decision about what piercing to get is to talk with your partner and fully research the different piercings available. If you try a piercing and find that it doesn't stimulate you or your partner as you had hoped, it can always be removed and another attempt at a different piercing can be made.

personal experience - vertical hoood piercing

Vertical Hood Piercing

Yesterday I finally had my navel pierced and went back today to get my vertical hood piercings.

I went to Basement, Ink. in Oak Forest, Illinois. This is where I plan on getting a tattoo which is supposed to start in a couple of weeks.

I'd been reading the forum at Tattoo/Body Piercings for a little while now and visiting the personal sites of some of the regulars. They are tattoo artists and piercers themselves. I've lost the fear of the unknown and felt very comfortable about what to expect so, got my piercings.

Normally I can't stand to have anyone touch my navel at all, its too sensitive but, I thought navel piercings are beautiful and I knew I would like to wear one. They are, it is and I do.

Joe did the piercing and he took his time to explain to me about the aftercare, what to expect, how it might feel and to answer any questions. He also told me about his license and how only two piercers in Illinois have his license. He assured me that if I ever purchase a ring from anywhere that I can bring it back to him to sterilize and he'd put it in for nothing.

I liked it so much and read the first hand experiences about vertical hood piercings that I knew my next piercing would be that.

I called the shop today to ask how long someone should wait between getting their navel and having their hood pierced. Joe wasn't in today but Terry was. I recognized his voice from being in the tattoo shop and he was also the very first person I met there when I went to see about my tattoo design in the first place.

Terry said that he is the piercer who does the genital piercings and that he'd be happy to do it for me right now if I wanted to come in.

I told him I was a little nervous and that I was going to take a shower to cool off first, (it was hot here today.)

He laughed and said that he would appreciate that.

He consulted with me and suggested that getting a gem barbell may not be the best to start off with so I got a surgical steel with balls on it.

Whew, that was nothing like the navel piercing. No way. I think I made it difficult for him also because reflexively I pushed away from him while he was piercing! I told him I was sorry. He said it was no problem at all because he continued with the piercing. Once I caught hold of my reflex I stopped pushing myself away and he had no problem finishing it up.

That totally surprised me. I mean, I think if my feet were not in the stirrups maybe I couldn't have gone anywhere.

So, you might want to keep it in mind to force yourself not to push yourself away from you piercer!

Terry was very kind about it and said not to worry. He did a great job and I am surprised by how pretty I think vertical hood rings look.

My suggestion is to really be certain that this is something you want. To do some research, know your piercer, and enjoy it.

It surprised me more than hurt because I knew it would be sensitive.

I was really surprised that neither my navel nor my hood piercings bled.

The navel piercing is for myself for my birthday gift, (37.) My vertical hood piercing is my happy divorce present, and the upcoming tattoo is a special way for me to honor my dodem.

Good luck, happy studying and researching, welcome to Tattoos/Body Modifications and enjoy your new adornments and art.

-Jennifer

Job Discrimination
Jan 26th 2013, 11:19

I got a part time job back in February. Up until now I have been wearing short sleeves. I have no obscene or racist ink or anything gang related. Recently my 2 day a week job was cut to one day a week and the other day my boss said, "You know, the customers all seem to like you, but a lot of them have said something about the tattoos. Could you please wear long sleeves from now on?"

What I want to know is do I have any rights at all? I have done nothing but go to work every day that she has asked me, done my job (more than perfectly, according to her), and been as nice as possible throughout all of this.

Answer: Unfortunately, tattoos and piercings are not (yet) protected by labor and/or discrimination laws. Employers are well within their rights to avoid hiring people with body art, ask you to cover them up or fire you if you don't. It's a disappointing truth and it's one of the many reasons I caution my readers about where they place their ink because it could damage their chances of getting the job of their choice. Since most of us need to work in order to survive, that's a sacrifice that sometimes has to be made.

If you have body art and need to find work, you have two basic options:

1. Find an employer that doesn't mind your body art - better yet, find one that considers it an asset.

or…

2. Cover it up at the employer's request in order to keep your job.

There are several companies (chains that exist nationwide, too) that not only approve of body art but encourage it as a way of connecting with their customer base. Alternative shops, cocktail bars, eateries that include entertainment, etc. Not only will these places accept you for who you are, but they're a hell of a lot more fun to work at than some stuffy flower shop.

Some of the places around me that are body art friendly are B.D.’s Mongolian BBQ, Dave & Buster’s, Hot Topic, Torrid, Target, Aeropostale, Barnes & Noble, Borders, Claire’s, Spencer’s Gifts, Sally Beauty Supply, and probably many others. It’s just a matter of getting out there and finding them. Or maybe you could even find a job as a counter girl in a tattoo shop â€" if they have a problem with your ink, the world has officially turned upside down!

But, assuming that maybe you are trained as a horticulturist/botanist and want to work in the field you are trained in, there are still lots of flower shops out there. Why subject yourself to the hour cuts and verbal aspersions from this one place when you might be able to find something much better right around the corner? Not all flower shop people are pretentious. Especially ones you find in more artistic or alternative parts of town.

It’s all about what kind of image the employer wants to portray and even if they don’t have anything personally against body art, I suppose they may view it as “casual.” If it’s not a t-shirt and jeans kind of place to work, then tattoos and piercings probably aren’t going to fit in either. I’m not necessarily saying that I agree, but I can kind of see where they’re coming from. If it’s meant to be a professional environment, then tattoos are sometimes perceived in the same realm as denim and sneakers. If they can ask you not to wear jeans, they feel it’s pretty much the same thing to ask you not to “wear” (or show) your body art.

If you have the time and resources to learn a new skill, then there are fields of work that are more ink-and-piercing friendly, such as IT, cosmetics, mechanics, construction, and bartending to name a few. If you don’t have the money to learn one of these skills yet, but you want to, then you might just have to put your picket sign down and cover up the ink long enough to earn the money if that’s what it takes to reach the goals you make for yourself. It’s up to you if you don’t like your current situation â€" either put up, cover up and shut up or take the steps necessary to change it.

When my family and I moved to Indianapolis, my husband had to shave his beard and cut his 16-inch long hair to be even considered for a decent job. He is highly intelligent, a hard worker, honest and reliable, but the hair and beard stopped him in his tracks everywhere he went in search of a job. Was it fair? No. Would he have been justified if he rebelled and refused to change on the basis of his own freedom of expression? Probably. But he also might have ended up flipping burgers for half the pay he ended up with after putting aside his own ego and losing the hair. Now he’s got a great job that is okay with his beard, pierced ears and tattoos. Progress happens, albeit slowly. Sometimes you just have to be patient.

Removal of Tattoo Waste
Jan 26th 2013, 11:19

Anything that comes into contact with bodily fluids (blood, plasma, mucus, semen, etc.) that cannot be sterilized must be disposed of. But you can't throw bio-hazard materials into a regular trash can, because then it could harm someone it comes in contact with at the waste management facility, or end up in the water supply or on a beach somewhere. Medical waste must be discarded in a separate bag or canister marked clearly as a biohazard.

Needles of any kind must be discarded in a sharps container. A sharps container is a plastic container, usually red, with a biohazard symbol on the outside. Just like the one in the doctor's office labeled "hazardous waste". The entire container is disposed of once it is full.

Things used by tattoo and piercing artists that qualify as hazardous waste (after use) that cannot be sterilized include (but are not limited to):

  • Tattoo needle sharps
    • Protective gloves
    • Paper towels
    • Plastic protective covers (used to cover the tattoo machine, cord, soap bottles, etc.)
    • Ink caps and leftover ink in caps
    • Cotton swabs
    • Any leftover ointment removed for use

Except for the actual sharps on the end of a tattoo needle bar, anything metal can be sterilized in an autoclave and reused. This includes piercing needles, tapers, needle bars and tattoo machine tubes.

Putting CBR Ring Beads Back In
Jan 26th 2013, 11:19

Question: Putting The Bead Back In A CBR.

How do you put the bead back in your CBR jewelry?

Answer: If you had to take your captive bead ring jewelry out or the ball bead popped out somehow, putting them back in can be tricky, but it can be done. I still can't get the darn things in and out myself and usually have to call on my dear husband for help. However, it can be done and I have written How to Insert and Close CBR Jewelry with instructions on how - for those with greater dexterity than myself.

Meaning of the Claddagh
Jan 26th 2013, 11:19

There are a couple of possible legends that explain the beginnings of the Claddagh symbol, which you can read about on the Claddagh History and Folklore Page. But the meaning of the symbol seem to be standard throughout all texts. Basically, it's a collage of elements that represent love, which is why the Claddagh ring is considered the traditional Irish engagement/marriage ring. The same ring can be worn different ways to represent your current relationship status.

The hands represent trust and friendship, while the heart stands for love and the crown signifies loyalty/fidelity. The circular shape of the ring, which can also be drawn into the design, stands for eternity. Sometimes the Claddagh is also accompanied by a cross, which represents faith. So, the Claddagh has many significant meanings all wrapped up into one pretty design.
