Reader Inquiry: How to Get Rid of Porn on My Computer
Jul 31st 2013, 13:33

Although not tattoo related, unless of course you are seeking tattooed porn ladies and gents, yesterday we had a reader search regarding "How to Get Rid of Porn on My Computer."

My first suggestion is to clear your Internet search history. From there you may need to use an anti-virus program to clean and scan your system. From there you should be OK unless you revisit these sites. But I mean, who does that?

I hope that helps.

Is it Wise to Get Someone's Name Tattooed on You?
Jul 31st 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

Although we sometimes joke about the humorous side of this issue (like the Norman Rockwell painting of the man with all his former girls' names crossed out as he gets yet another name tattoo) it is one that should really be strongly considered. Before you etch your significant other's (boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, etc.) name in your skin for all eternity, consider the seriousness of your actions. I've seen everything from disgust to desperation on the faces of people wanting to get a name tattoo covered up. Fortunately, many of you reading this article will have the opportunity to prevent that from ever happening.

Getting a tattoo is even more of a commitment than getting married. You can't divorce your tattoo! And even though you can cover up a tattoo, it will still always be there, and it will stand as a constant reminder. If you have it removed with laser surgery, more than likely you will have the scars to show for it. Your tattoo is for life. So, how much do you love that man/woman again? And anytime you go into getting a tattoo with the attitude that, "If it doesn't work out, I can have it covered/removed", you should not even be thinking about it in the first place.

The Jinx Factor?
Although I'm not usually inclined to be superstitious, there does seem to be a connection with name tattoos and following break-ups. Some people feel that getting their loved one's name tattooed on them would just be tempting the Gods of mayhem. Couples who swore their love would never die (ahem, Billy Bob and Angelina for example) are now scrambling to the nearest cover-up artist to erase forever the one they claimed undying love for. I'm not saying this will happen to you; I'm only advising that you give it some really serious thought before you make a decision you might regret some day.

Tattoo artist, Chris Long of Fairborn Tattoo in Fairborn, Ohio, gives his opinion on this in "An Artist's Perspective". Chris says, "Names as a tattoo are not always wrong but there are lots of reasons not to do it. Of course the name of a boy/girlfriend or significant other seems like a lasting tribute or commitment to that other person. However I have rarely done this type of tattoo on someone who didn't have some notion of the possible regrets one might encounter in the future. Names tattooed upon your body won't make you or the other person any more committed to each other and it is not like a shirt that you can take off. Think about it. I have of course covered up many names, the names of ex-lovers as the new lover stands by tapping their foot, a persons own name as they tell me they are tired of telling people they are not gay or wondering, 'how does that guy know my name?'"

Now, getting a tattoo of that special someone's name is a generous show of devotion, and if you decide that this is really what you want to do, I would not be one to stand in your way. You will, however, want to consider the personal feelings of the person involved. Make sure they don't object to you openly displaying your feelings for them.

Exceptions to the Rule
One of the few exceptions to the no-name rule is when you're getting a tattoo in memory of someone special in your life who has passed away. It's very unlikely you'd have any reason to change your feelings about them once they're gone. This is a very loving way to show that you will not forget someone from your past. However, if you plan to remarry or date again, the above advice may still hold true so bear that in mind. The other exception is your children - you will always love them no matter what and getting a tattoo with their names is a great way to show how much you care.

So, seriously consider the consequences before you choose to show your love in the most permanent of ways. Honestly, my personal suggestion would be to buy your sweetheart a teddy bear, and if you really want to have someone's name tattooed on you, save it for the names of your children. No matter what, you will always love them.

Tattoo Removal - Options and Alternatives to...
Jul 31st 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

There are a lot of reasons for possibly wanting a tattoo removed â€" the positive element of tattoo removal is that you are no longer burdened with a tattoo you seriously regret. If a tattoo is holding you back from getting a job you want or keeps you from attaining goals you have set for yourself, a little pain and scarring may be worth it to you. If you have a gang-related tattoo and are no longer associating yourself with that gang or any gang (good for you!), it would be in your best interests to have it removed. If you have a tattoo that symbolizes hate or prejudice, I hope that you will decide that it is time to let it go. If you are wearing a tattoo of a past love and now you have a new special person in your life, it would be unkind to your new love NOT to get rid of the old tattoo.

If you have a tattoo that you wish to have partially or completely removed, you should first consider your options and decide which method might be best for you.

Laser Removal
Today, lasers are the most common method of tattoo removal. They work by targeting the ink with pulses of highly concentrated light that break the ink into tiny fragments, which are then cleared away the your own immune system. However, this isn’t all done with just one treatment. The more treatments you have, the more the laser can penetrate to destroy the ink. But, the more treatments you have, the more damage you do to your skin, causing painful blisters and scabs that can eventually lead to scarring. Experts in removal therapy say that technology has advanced to the point where scarring is minimal, sometimes non-existant, but this can vary depending on the situation.

On top of being physically painful (it has been described as feeling like being splattered with hot grease), laser removal can be painful to your wallet as well. Depending on your tattoo, you may need anywhere from 1-10 sessions, each costing in the range of $250-$850 per session. A large, professional tattoo in color could cost thousands of dollars to remove, and the effectiveness of the removal still isn’t guaranteed.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy
Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, or IPL, is a dermal enhancer currently being used in some spas. Instead of laser light, it uses high intensity light in pretty much the same manner. A gel is applied to the skin and then a wand is used to emit pulses of light onto the skin area being treated. This method is said to be less painful and more effective than traditional laser therapy, but there are many tattoo removal experts who do not recommend IPL. Even if it does work a little better, the bad news is that it also carries a heftier price tag â€" one clinic offering a price of $10 per pulse. Depending on how many pulses per session your tattoo requires, this could add up to a significant amount of money.

Other Medical Methods
There are other methods of tattoo removal, but most of them are so painful and ineffective that laser removal replaced them as soon as it became available. These other methods include dermabrasion, which would actually “sand” away the top layer of skin through abrasive friction. Another method is excision, where the tattoo would be cut away and the skin sewn back together. These methods have proved to cause much damage to the skin and result in severe scarring, and are only used today in extreme cases where laser surgery is not an option.

Do-It-Yourself Cream Removals
I have not personally tested any of the at-home cream removal methods I have seen advertised â€" even the ones that appear right here on this website. Honestly, I would not expect a whole lot from them. However, the Tattoo Removal Institute (which I am suspicious of being connected with Tat B Gone, but I can’t prove it yet) states that they have tested a few of these products, and found a couple of them to live up to their claims. According to their research, both TatBGone and Tattoo-OFF did show significant fading of the tattoos without any pain or damage to the skin. I am still very skeptical, but if you really need a tattoo removed and don’t have the money for surgery, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try one or both of these products. It’s not chump change, though â€" a 2 month supply of Tat B Gone is $125, and it takes several months to get the desired results, according to the Tattoo Removal Institute. A 2 month supply of Tattoo-OFF is $116.95. So, it isn’t inexpensive by any means, but certainly a lot more affordable than laser surgery. But before you shell out any money for these products, you might want to read some of the comments that have been sent in by people who have tried them. (next page)

Snug Piercings - Guide to Snug (Anti Helix)...
Jul 31st 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

Definition: Snug piercings can pretty much reside anywhere along the vertical inner cartilage ridge of the ear that runs parallel to the rim, which is also called the anti-helix. It's very closely related to the rook, which resides along the upper horizontal plane of the same ridge.

Most anti-helix ridges are shallow and can only accommodate a very small snug piercing. A micro curved barbell or CBR is required to gather as much cartilage as possible within the piercing, and a skilled artist is needed to create a piercing that doesn't put undue stress on each side of the ridge. Incorrect balance can cause irreversible damage to the cartilage.

Depending on the depth and thickness of your anti-helix, you could go as small as 20 gauge for your snug, and in most cases I wouldn't recommend anything larger than a 16 gauge. The length of the barbell or size of the CBR should be determined by your piercer to ensure proper placement and balance.

Penis Tattoo FAQ
Jul 31st 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

While certainly not for every man, some guys are interested in a penis tattoo. This tattoo placement conjures up a variety of thoughts, images and a host of questions. Do you have to be erect during a penis tattoo? What are some design ideas? Never opt for a penis tattoo for your first tattoo, rather build up your pain tolerance and knowledge with the following facts and tips.

1. Why Men Tattoo Their Penis

Some guys tattoo their penis because it fits into their overall body modification theme. Others do it because it feels a little rebellious and they want to add that element to their body art. Choosing to tattoo the penis is highly individual. Some people may tattoo this area in part of a couples theme design, while others go it alone and just go crazy with a silly idea. The reason and design suggestions are endless, but the facts remain the same. Keep reading.

2. Finding an Artist

Finding a tattoo artist that will do a penis tattoo will be your first challenge. Due to the sensitive nature of this tattoo placement, not every artist will be willing to honor your request. Others may be glad to do it but will charge accordingly, meaning they may ask for more compensation than they would for a tattoo that's placed in a less intimate area. Remember, your artist has to feel comfortable performing the work and that burden may cost more than a tattoo placed on your bicep.

3. Pain Tolerance

Yes, a penis tattoo will hurt. Some men enjoy this part of the process and actually seek it out for this reason alone, as a form of a fetish. While others simply like to add an element of surprise to their manhood. As with all tattoos, pain is relative. Practicing breathing and relaxation techniques while focusing on something other than the needle is the best way to cope. You should never opt for a penis tattoo as your first tattoo, rather build up to this area once you know your personal level of pain tolerance.

4. Do I Need to be Erect?

There are no silly questions, especially when it comes to penis tattoos. Your artist will hold your penis taut, and it should not be erect, rather firmly held and stretched so that the artist has full control for proper needle placement. If you become aroused, worry not. Simply apologize and carry on and try to relax. Your tattoo artist should expect this occurrence due to the sensitive nature of the location.

5. Design Ideas

Tattoo designs should always be well thought out, particularly if placed on the genital area. Whimisical and funny penis tattoo ideas include a Hammerhead shark, a pencil, a mushroom, a wad of money to blow, colored flames, Pinnochio , or an arrow. More obvious animal tattoo choices for this area include fire-breathing and dangerous dragons, a sinful snake , or a grand elephant's trunk. Any sort of design that mimics the natural positioning of your anatomy will be fitting. If you have any genital body piercings, try to design an idea around your other modifications for added style. One of the most popular ideas is a lover's name tattoo. Whether to prove your commitment, or make right of a past wrong, think twice before you ink a name.

6. Full Disclosure

Finally, after you've scoured the facts, made the decision and had the work, what do you do? Show it off? Penis tattoos are not at all common, so you can expect anyone who sees it to have varied questions and reactions. Some partners may be sexually turned on, while others, not so much. If you're entering an intimate relationship and things have begun to head South, you may want to disclose your body art, or be prepared for anything. You may pleasantly find that a penis tattoo enhances your sex life as it unleashes the wild sides of both you, and your partner.

5 Tattoos - 5 Experiences

Wow, after reading about all the losers who get stupid crap tattooed on them I really had to write in. I really shouldn't say that, though, because I have a few tattoos on me that aren't the most original or meaningful, but I've progressed.

OK- I have a total of 5 tattoos. I will recount the stories of them.

When I was younger I never, ever, thought that I would get a tattoo. I thought they were dumb, and only for people who were on a lower level than myself. Then I went to college. After attending the University of Wisconsin Madison for a semester, I wanted a tattoo. Probably to fit in, or feel different. Not really any deep spiritual meaning or needing. I thought for a few months about what I wanted, and came to a decision. I wanted a Phoenix with the word “Invictus” under it. Invictus is Latin for unconquerable. My wife, girlfriend at the time, had gone to a shop that she said was good. The Blue Lotus is very professional and hospital level clean. I went in and the artist who my wife was tattooed by wasn’t there, but I wanted this tattoo today, so I settled for one of the other artists. He told me he couldn’t do the phoenix design I had wanted the size I wanted, so I decided to just go with the lettering. The stencil went on my right shoulder and the process began. About ten minutes later it was over. I had my very first tattoo, small as it may be. I paid the man $50, and was on my merry way. I took immaculate care of it, washing and putting lotion on it.

Now, tattooing had me. I was content with what I had, but I really wanted the phoenix. So about six or seven months later I decided to go in and get it. This time bigger and on my back centered between my shoulder blades. This time I did get the artist my wife had gone to. Rich, is great. Very good attitude and very willing to work with you to get what you want. I only wanted to spend $200 so he sized it accordingly. Later I found out that he made it bigger so that it would look better on my back. This is a true mark of an artist and not a businessman. He was willing to take a hit in his pocket just to make sure that it would look better. This tattoo was considerably more painful than my last ten-minute experience. I took about 2.5 hours. The spine and either side of the spine in the soft tissue are very painful areas. We finished and it looked great. I shook Rich’s hand and knew I would be back.

My next tattoo was a tribal piece. Yes, I like almost every other tattooed human on the planet has a tribal piece. It covered my left shoulder with broad sweeping lines. It was a much more pleasant spot to be tattooed than my back. I really have no good reason for getting this tattoo other than the fact that I liked the way it looked and I wanted to get another tattoo. It cost me $150, and Rich was now my official tattoo artist.

My next tattoo was born of loss and grief. When my grandfather died, I wanted something to remember him and my grandmother who had passed a year before. I told Rich my idea, an angel with wings spread and hands out, standing on a block with my last name and the dates they died. We spent a few hours drawing it up and tweaking it to my satisfaction. It was BIG, about 13 inches tall, six inches across and it was going right below my phoenix. I wasn’t looking forward to another back tattoo, but I was determined to create a lasting memorial to my grandparents. It took about 2 hours and 15 minutes. It was very, very painful. I think your frame of mind has a great deal to do with the amount of pain you feel. I was still upset about my grandparents, and the lower back is even worse than the upper. I have the utmost respect for girls who get tattoos on their lower back. It isn’t a walk in the park. By the end I was almost in tears, but then Rich said he was done. I was g! lad, and was ecstatic when I looked in the mirror. It was amazing. Rich was very pleased with how it came out as well.

So after a rather painful experience I took a bit of a break from getting tattooed, but sooner or latter that tattoo bug bites you again. Now I was getting serious about tattooing, so I wanted a back piece. A back piece is a full back tattoo. I had an idea of what I wanted and how to incorporate the phoenix and the angel into one big piece, so I sat down with Rich. We spent a couple hours one day and the a couple the next and came up with a really cool idea. It already looked like the phoenix was rising out of the angel, so we decided to have a run down, burning city scene down by the angel, and a blast wave of light and color all around the phoenix. A banner over the top with the last two lines of the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley would frame everything up. “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”

All told I think we spent a total of 25 hours on my back broken up in two or three hour sessions. As far as the pain issue goes, it increases as you go towards the center and down on the back. Also when I became engaged to my wife, half way through the back piece, we got matching tattoos. The phrase “love conquers all” in Latin was tattooed on our left arms right above the shirt line.

This brings us to my current project. I love tattoos, and I hated that no one could see mine. I had a f***ing back piece and no one in my Mechanical Engineering classes could see it. No one on the street knew how important tattooing was to me. So I mad a huge decision, I was going to get a sleeve. (A tattoo piece that covers an entire arm, cuff to shoulder.) I chose my right arm since only lonely Invictus was scrawled on the top of my shoulder. The idea for the tattoo came from the Herbert Draper painting, The Lament for Icarus. Rich made a few changes to it, and we began. The arm is so much less painful than the back. These sessions are much easier than my back piece sessions. So, I’m about 17 hours into my sleeve, and have about 13 more to go.

Here is a summary of what I have learned in my tattooing experiences:

1. Bigger is better. They are not just trying to make more money off of you. The parts of your body are bigger than you think, and putting a one inch by one inch tattoo in the middle of a sea of skin isn’t going to look as good as a nice big image that fills up the space. Also, the artist will be able to add more detail to a large tattoo.

2. It will cost you some money. I’ve spent thousands on my tattoos, but in the long run, they are cheaper than anything else you’ll buy. They last forever!

3. Odds are you’ll want to get another after you’re first. I don’t know why, but everyone I’ve ever talked to says that tattoos are addicting.

4. DON’T GET FLASH. Think of something original and your own. Have a general idea and then have your artist design something for you. They will appreciate it, and then you’ll have something no one in the world has. Make your tattoo have some sort of meaning, not just “I want that one”

5. All the other crap everyone else always says: research your artist, make sure they are sterile, blah blah, after-care, blah blah blah.

So there you have it, a tattoo addicts confession. I hope you have a good experience with tattoos, and I hope you come to love and respect them as much as I do.

-Andrew

Battle of the "Scratchers"
Jul 28th 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

I've been reading a lot lately about "scratchers" fighting for their right to tattoo. A scratcher, basically, is someone who taught him/herself the art of tattooing without the benefit of an apprenticeship under a professional artist. This may sound harmless enough in itself, but "scratchers" have been scrutinized under a very close microscope lately, and have been coming under serious attack by tattoo artists all over. I thought I'd give the subject a little attention myself.

The art of tattooing has long been a trade which traditionally was handed down from generation to generation through apprenticeships. A student would work under the supervision and training of the master, and in return for free labor, the master would train the student. Needless to say, that long-standing tradition is gone. Apprenticeships these days are as follows: The student pays (usually a very large sum) in return for his education, and the master, in return....well, he STILL gets free labor. And many times, as I'm seeing a lot of now...the artists offering apprenticeships are NOT masters. Many times, they are new to trade themselves, and are using "apprenticeships" as a way to create revenue, rather than as a way to create future masters of the trade.

So, why apprentice? Well, unfortunately we live in a day and age where tattooing could literally be the death of a customer if proper procedures are not strictly carried out. Needles and equipment must be properly sterilized, cross-contamination and strict sterilization techniques must be adhered to, or disease can spread as quickly as wildfire.Spreading blood-born pathogens is a quick way to kill a client, AND the reputation of the entire profession of tattooing. If you think that the only thing you'd learn as an apprentice is how to stick a needle in someone...think again! There is so much to be learned, and many of these things simply cannot be learned just by reading a book. If you think you're ready to start tattooing on your own, answer the following questions:

  • What are the laws in your city/state on tattooing?
  • What certifications and/or licenses are required to tattoo legally in your city/state?
  • What is the procedure of operating an autoclave? What temperature must the autoclave reach and for how long?
  • What is a blood-born pathogen and how do you prevent the spread of it, and cross-contamination?
  • How do you thoroughly clean and disinfect needles and tubes before autoclaving?
  • What layer of epidermis of the skin must you NOT enter to prevent scarring of a tattoo?
  • What is plasma, and what does the leakage of plasma during a tattoo indicate?

These are only a few of the things that are absolutely necessary for a tattoo artist to know, and if you can't answer all of these questions with concise understanding, you are not ready to be a tattoo artist!Go get an apprenticeship!

Now, don't get me wrong..I don't think all apprentices need to be taught how to draw! Some of the most fabulous artwork comes from "scratchers" and new apprentices. The reason that western tattoos have evolved so much over the years is because so many new faces have been added to the roster, and because they didn't have someone standing over there shoulders saying "You can't do that!", they have found a wonderful world of variety, color, and effects that old school tattoos cannot hold a candle to.

The aforementioned, however, is not a reason to go off and try to learn how to tattoo on your own. Gain experience from a master, pay your dues, put in your time and dedication to the art, and learn how to do it right.

That also puts a burden on the tattoo artists already out there. You cannot look down on a scratcher if you turn away that eager young man/woman that came into your shop wanting an apprenticeship. If you want the next generation of tattooists to be trained in the traditional way, it is your responsibility to make sure that opportunity is there! And remember, too, your apprentice is not a walking cash flow. They are our future.

Hood Piercing Leads to Romance?
Jul 28th 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

The aftercare is relatively simple--Tyler made sure he went over everything with me and gave me a pamphlet to follow. I wash it thoroughly with Dial soap 2x a day, soak it warm water and sea salt 2x a day to draw out any infection, and keep my hands away from it (as well as anyone else's!). That last part is the hardest! I just want to look and touch it all day!

Its healing nicely and isn't sore at all. There has been no crusting or swelling. And Tyler did a great job, as he explained when he was done..."the ball will rest nicely on your clit, so you'll get some sensation from it," as if he knew! I really enjoy walking more now, to say the least!!!

All in all, I think this piercing was the best birthday present I could ever have given myself. And I am fortunate that my new friend was experienced with piercings and that NY Adorned was where I had it done. Tyler was EXCELLENT! I was so pleased that I gave him $20 tip, to which he said, "Aww, you are so sweet." Man, what a cutie.

So, if you are considering such a piercing, I highly recommend it, and I am not into piercings, tattoos, etc., in general. So, if you are in the NYC area, you should check out www.nyadorned.com -- good luck!!!

Profile of Tattoo Artist Sailor Jerry
Jul 27th 2013, 11:12, by tattoo.guide@about.com

Sailor Jerry at Sea:

Step right up and I'll tell you a tale about Sailor Jerry ; and his legendary tattoos.

Sailor Jerry was in fact, actually a sailor. His style of tattoos are known as old school tattoos but they are really not that old.

Sailor Jerry, born Norman Keith Collins in January of 1911, was a sailor and a rugged tattoo artist who spent many wild and partying nights at sea. Booze, stories and legends made their way onto matey's arms and legs in tribute to their time spent aboard the merry ship.

Norman Keith Collins learned the art of tattooing as he traveled overseas. Spending many years in Hawaii, Asian-inspired designs of hula girls and pinup women became signature to Sailor Jerry's style. Tigers, anchors and compass designs began to brand his designs.

Sailor Jerry's work was so colorful and unique that eventuallu other artists began to steal his signature style, including his name. and his work was often stolen. Sailor Jerry had business cards stamped "The Original Sailor Jerry" to put an end to copycats throughout the United States.

Regardless of the competition, Norman Keith Collins was the coolest, toughest and most legendary artist of his time and his art depicted so many different meanings. It's no wonder Sailor Jerry appealed to the masses and changed the stereotypes of tattoos.

Famous Old School Designs:

You may have heard of old school tattoos , but what are they? Well in short they are a style of traditional tattoos. Cursive fonts, banners, stars, anchors and pinup ladies represent some of the most well-known designs of old school tattoos.

Many people who bear Sailor Jerry style tattoos incorporate their look into a canvas of sleeves since the designs flow so well into one another. People involved in certain sub-cultures such as rockabilly or punk lifestyles will often brand old school tattoos as part of their image. Women bear pin-up styles just as much as men. If you have a fondness for retro styling and simple hearts and banners, old school tattoos may be for you. Today, Ed Hardy apparel depicts the fashionable side of old school tattoos. Trained under Sailor Jerry himself, Ed Hardy was one of three guys Sailor Jerry took under his wing. In other words, those three guys were pretty cool.

Patriotic Roots:

Love. Kills. Slowly.

During World War II, soldiers and sailors took to Sailor Jerry's location in Honolulu, Hawaii to get inked. Memorial tattoos, eagles and Mom tattoos gained popularity as a tribute of hope and brotherhood. Sailor Jerry's work became a worldwide symbolism of American unity during the otherwise somber times of war.

Men who never dreamed of getting tattooed stood in line with their military cuts and paid tribute to Mom. It felt right. And it somehow changed the world of tattoos.

Life and Passing:

Sailor Jerry passed the torch to three proteges before his death in 1973. Mike Malone, Zeke Owen and Don Ed Hardy all established a tattoo reputation worthy of Sailor Jerry's approval. His instructions were simple. One of three men take over the shop after his death, or the place got burnt down to ashes along with his famed designs. Luckily, the shipped stayed afloat and Mike Malone took over.

Today, his proteges have gone separate ways. Don Ed Hardy continues to oversee artists at his Tattoo City shop located in San Francisco. Sadly, Mike Malone committed suicide with a single bullet in 2007 after leaving a simple note, "Time to check out."

Some would call Sailor Jerry a true pirate. Thankfully, he left a treasure of talent behind known as old school tattoos. With a talented artist at your hand, you can bring to life some of the most celebrated pieces of old school art amd wear these signature designs however you'd like. Like many, you'll likely opt for more.
