Apadravya
Jan 30th 2012, 11:04

NOTE: The following page contains content and material of a sexual nature which may be inappropriate for children and may be offensive to some adults. Please use this page responsibly.

Male Genital: Apadravya [See Picture]

The Apadravya is similar to the Ampallang, except that instead of a horizontal piercing through the penis glans (head) it is a vertical piercing. It has been mentioned in the Kama Sutra as an erotic piercing for both visual and physical arousal. Placement of the needle is also critical with this piercing or it could result in severe bleeding. If not treated immediately, it could result in death. Less severe possible complications are migration and/or rejection of the jewelry.

This piercing can be a slow and painful procedure due to the fibrous nature of the glans. The piercing can be placed through or around the urethra. The most important thing is to be sure that the corpus cavernosum is not damaged. (An experienced piercer will know this.)

Recommended jewelry: 14, 12, or 10 gauge straight barbell.

Expected healing time: 6 - 12 months

Sexual limitations: Two weeks abstinence and considerable care afterward until healed. A condom should be worn until it is completely healed.

Spore Strip Testing
Jan 30th 2012, 11:04

Are you considering getting a new tattoo or piercing but have concerns about the possible health risks associated with the procedure? If so, you may want to investigate whether the studio has test records documenting that their sterilizer has been tested with biological spore strips through an independent testing laboratory.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has recognized the risks associated with the use of small sterilizers in the tattoo and piercing industries, primarily in the potential transmission of blood related diseases such as tuberculosis, hepatitis-B, and HIV. If you were to receive a tattoo or piercing with un-sterile equipment previously used on an infected person, you could be at risk in contracting the disease. As a result, tattoo, piercing, and permanent cosmetic businesses are rapidly coming under new regulations governing the sterilization of equipment used in daily operations. These regulations outline requirements for testing sterilizers (autoclaves) with spore strips, also called biological indicators. Some states currently do not have regulations requiring spore testing. Some states that do have regulations do not actively audit the studios to ensure the testing is being done. Whether a tattoo or piercing studio is required by law to perform routine spore testing or not, it should be a part of their standard operating procedure. Routine spore strip testing not only ensures that the sterilization equipment being used is capable of sterilizing, but also is an indicator of the operator’s ability to run the autoclave correctly.

So what is a spore strip test and how does it work? A spore strip is a small piece of filter paper that is impregnated with thousands of bacterial spores. The strip is sealed in a permeable glassine envelope and is used to monitor the effectiveness of an autoclave sterilizer. When ran through a sterilization cycle, if the spores are destroyed, you can be assured that any potential pathogens on the items being sterilized have also been destroyed. Normally the studio owner contacts an independent testing laboratory to purchase a spore test kit through a mail-in program. On a routine basis, typically weekly or monthly, a spore strip is placed in the sterilizer with a normal load of packaged items to be sterilized. When the sterilization cycle is complete, the spore strip is mailed back to the testing laboratory for further processing. If the test result is negative growth, indicating sterility, an acceptable test report is mailed back to the business to be kept on record. If the test result is positive growth, indicating a sterilization failure, the business is contacted immediately by telephone and informed of a problem with the sterilizer. A positive (failed) spore test report is then sent to the studio and should also be kept on record. If a tattoo studio receives a positive sterility failure, they should quarantine all items that have been sterilized with that sterilizer and not use them on customers. Once the problem has been identified and corrected, the items should be re-packaged and re-sterilized. A sterilizer that has failed a spore test should not be used until the problem has been corrected and a negative (passing) spore test is performed. Most studios maintain a back-up sterilizer in the event that they have problems with the primary one.

If these procedures are followed, the studio has demonstrated that their sterilizer is working properly and that they are working to ensure your health and safety through proper sterilization practices. So if you’re planning on getting a tattoo or piercing, be sure to ask to see documentation that their sterilization equipment has successfully passed a spore strip test. The tattoo studio should willingly provide these records for your review. Most testing laboratories also provide a certificate for display at the studio to indicate that they actively participate in a biological spore strip testing program. If a studio has no certificate or records of routinely passing spore tests, there is no way you can be assured that their sterilization process is safe.

Prince Albert
Jan 30th 2012, 11:04

Definition: The "Prince Albert" is a male genital piercing that goes through the glans (head) of the penis and out through the urethra.

Legend says that an actual Prince Albert had this piercing, thus the name. However, this has never been proven and the actual origination of the name is unknown.

Some mistakenly refer to any male genital piercing as a Prince Albert, but this piercing is very specific and distinct from the others.

Also Known As: P.A. or PA (the letters are pronounced separately)

Can Stretched Hole Shrink Back
Jan 27th 2012, 11:04

Question: Stretched Ear Lobes With Gauges.

Stretched ear lobes and gauges, is it possible to remove the jewelry and have your ear lobes shrink back?

Answer: That depends on a few variables, such as:
  • How it was stretched
  • How much it was stretched
  • How long it has been healed
First, how it was stretched. If you stretched slowly and carefully, not causing any tearing or scarring, that will increase your chances of your ear going back to its normal size and shape. If you used a dermal punch, stretched too quickly, used heavy weights that stretched an abnormal shape or caused any scar tissue to form, then your liklihood of it going back is greatly diminished.

Secondly, how much it was stretched. If you stretch your lobe to 00g or smaller, you are a much better candidate for your ear going back to "normal". However, if you stretch your ear to a severely large size - like an inch in diameter - then your chances are much smaller that your ear will ever go back to the way it was.

Lastly, how long it has been healed. If you stretched your ear a year ago or a few months ago, your ear has a much better chance of shrinking back to its original size than if it has been stretched and fully healed for several years.

Keep in mind that none of these are hard and fast rules. Everyone's body is different and everyone heals differently. There is really just no way to know for sure if your piercing would go back to "normal" size if you decide to stretch and then try to go back. This is why stretching should be taken very seriously and not just done on a whim, because it very well may be something your "stuck" with for the rest of your life. If that makes you happy, then great! If that makes you nervous, then you might want to reconsider before you take this step.

How to Get a Safe Tattoo
Jan 26th 2012, 11:04

You've seen them; you've hated them; you've loved them. What are they? Tattoos! How many times have you walked into a tattoo shop, fantasized about all the cool things you'd loved to get, and walked out of the shop just as bare as when you walked in? You know you want to get a tattoo and don't know where to start? Well, don't despair; neither did I. Unlike many who stumble into a tattoo parlor after a night of downing the booze and arguing with their buddies about who's the toughest, I did extensive, and I do mean, extensive research on the subject before I was going to trust my precious skin in the hands of some maniacal witchdoctor with a tattoo gun and a thirst for blood. Well, to say the least, there are a million sources out there with all kinds of advice about what to do, where to go, etc. Of course, then there is the problem: who do you believe? My mission is to help you sort the facts from the fiction and to answer your most desperate questions about getting a tattoo.

Update: This article has evolved into an even more helpful tool for you to use in your quest for information, The Beginner's Guide to Getting a Tattoo. I'd like to invite you to click on over there to begin your exploration.

The Art of Mehndi - Making Your Own Cones for Applying Henna Paste
Jan 25th 2012, 11:04

Henna paste can be applied several different ways. Some use a toothpick and carefully place the design on bit by bit. Some use little squeeze bottles and apply it in smooth lines. The pre-mixed paste comes in tubes and is squeezed out easily. If you make your own henna paste at home, the choice is yours as to what you are the most comfortable with. I, personally, prefer cones. Cones can also be purchased pre-made, but they are very simple to make at home and also inexpensive. Cones are less messy, and they are disposable afterward so they require no cleanup. Here is a very simple way to make your own cones at home:

What You Will Need:

  • Small freezer bags - one will make 2 cones
  • Scissors
  • Scotch tape
  • Twist ties

Step One: Cut the freezer bag into squares

cutting the freezer bag into squares The size you make the cones is up to you, but you don't want it too big or it will be hard to handle. It also depends on the size of the freezer bags you start with. I usually cut the bags into 6" squares. Use a straight edge to make sure your corners are 90 degrees, as this will help in the actual folding of the cone.

Step Two: Make a funnel shape out of the square

Making a funnel shape out of the square This is not as easy as it sounds. The plastic is very slippery and you will want to wrap the square around itself in such a way that it completely overlaps (leaving no open spaces for the paste to squeeze out). At the same time, you need to leave a small hole at the bottom of the funnel, just large enough to allow the paste to squeeze out without difficulty. This might take some practice and becoming comfortable with the consistency of your henna paste and what size hole is required to get an even flow.

Step Three: Taping the cone

Taping the cone After you get the funnel exactly how you want it, you will need to tape along the side edges where the plastic overlaps. Be careful not to move the plastic when you do this, or you will have to start over again. It's good if you already have a few small pieces of tape ready instead of trying to get it from the dispenser at this time. Tape all the way from the bottom to the top of the funnel.

Step Four: Filling the cone

Filling the cone Now you will want to put your prepared henna paste in the cone. Using a small spoon* seems to be the best way to do this. Carefully place a spoonful of henna paste into the cone, and press your finger lightly against it (from the outside) as you remove the spoon. Repeat until the cone is about half full. Filling too much can cause the cone to be hard to handle and burst due to excessive squeezing. *Note: Never use anything metal with your henna paste - use plastic or glass.

Step Five: Closing the cone

Closing the cone One who is experienced in using the cones (or even in using decorating bags) can usually just twist the end of the cone and apply the paste. This can become quite messy for one that is not used to it, though, because not applying the right amount of pressure and squeezing the proper way can cause the henna to come spilling out the top. The best thing to use in this case would be a twist tie. First, twist the bag itself in the direction of the overlapping fold. Then secure it with a twist tie, and you're ready to go!

And that's it! It takes a little practice, but making your own henna paste and your own cones is less expensive, and creates beautiful henna art without a lot of work.

How to Take Good Tattoo Photos
Jan 22nd 2012, 11:04

Taking a good, clean picture of your tattoo doesn't have to be difficult, but there are a lot of common mistakes people make that result in bad quality photos. Here's some tips on taking a shot of your tattoo that does the artist's work justice.

Difficulty: Average

Time Required: 10 - 15 Minutes

Here's How:

  1. Start with a clean, dry tattoo. Brand new tattoos that are still seeping blood or are covered with ointment are not going to produce a good photograph.
  2. Use a decent camera. Webcams and low quality digital cameras just don't take good pictures. A $10 disposable 35mm point-and-shoot will produce better results than a webcam.
  3. Get a friend to help. Don't try to take pictures of your own tattoos. You really can't get a good angle or proper distance from it when you're trying to reach around to photograph your own body.
  4. Proper lighting is important. For best results, go outside. That way you won't need to use flash and the natural light will produce the best color results. If you must be indoors, get near a window or under a bright (but not harsh) light source. Try to avoid having to use flash, which tends to cause glare.
  5. Don't get too close. Unless you have a macro function on your camera/lens, getting close to your tattoo will only result in a blurry image. With a typical point-and-shoot, it is recommended that you are at least 2-3 feet away from your subject. Photos can be scanned to create larger, high resolution photos later for a better closeup of the tattoo.
  6. Hold still! Shaking the camera or moving it before it has completed taking the capture will result in a blurred image. Hold still and keep still until the camera has completed taking the photo. This is especially important with some digital cameras, which tend to have a slower shutter speed.
  7. Take several pictures. Don't just snap one shot and be done with it. Move around, try different angles, different light sources, with flash, without flash, different distances, etc. The more pictures you take, the better your odds are that you'll end up with at least one really great shot.
  8. Use a photo editor for web images. Once you have a decent shot, you can enhance or improve the capture with a photo editing program. You can zoom in on the tattoo, crop out the background, enhance the colors, sharpen the image and make other adjustments. But be sure not to make so many adjustments that you reduce the original quality.

Tips:

  1. Although ointment can cause glare, an older tattoo may look muted if it is too dry. Apply a small amount of lotion and rub it in thoroughly to bring out the colors of your tattoo. Remove any excess lotion, though, to prevent any glare.
  2. Digital cameras have an advantage over film cameras because you can preview your results on the LCD screen. But even digital cameras need to be good quality - I recommend no less than a 5 megapixel camera.
  3. If you have glare issues, applying a thin layer of cosmetic powder can help to reduce light reflection from the tattoo.
  4. Blurry images are caused by moving the camera or being too close to the subject. Grainy images are caused by poor quality cameras or improper lighting. Glared pictures are caused by ointment on the tattoo or a harsh light source. Dark photos are caused by improper lighting or being too close to the subject.

What You Need:

  • A tattoo to take a picture of
  • A camera
  • A friend to take the pictures if the tattoo is your own
  • A little time and patience
