May I Speak to a Manager?

My Visit to High Voltage Tattoo, Home of Kat Von D and L.A. Ink

So, after pacing back and forth a few more times, feigning interest in the pinball machines and coffin seat at the front of the shop, I finally caught a young girl's attention and asked if I could please speak with a manager. Of course, she needed to know why first, so I explained that I was with About.com/New York Times and would like to take some pictures around the shop and interview someone if they had time. So, she went to go get the manager, and guess who it was? Mr. Personality himself! (Turns out his name is Dennis.)

Body Jewelry Materials
Feb 24th 2012, 11:04

There are a lot of different raw materials that can be used to make body jewelry. They come in a wide variety of substances such as metals, glass, plastics and organics. Some materials even come in different grades and qualities. When putting something on or through your skin, a subject of decoration also brings about the subject of health and safety. Some materials are more conducive to healing a new piercing, while others are only recommended for well-established piercings or short-term wear. It’s important that you familiarize yourself with the choices you have before you purchase body jewelry, as they are not all alike.

METALS
The safety or allergen risk of metal jewelry is largely determined by the amount of nickel it contains. Nickel is a metallic element that is not bio-compatible and causes a lot of healing difficulty and hyper-sensitivity issues when it is used in piercing jewelry metals. Bottom line when it comes to body jewelry â€" the lower the metal quality, the higher risk of difficulties.

  • Costume Piercing Jewelry
Many people can’t wear costume jewelry at all because of the high nickel content. Even “nickel-free” jewelry made for sensitive ears is not high quality metal and not recommended for new piercings or long-term wear. Some costume jewelry has even been found to contain lead. Simply put, cheap jewelry is not a good idea.
  • Sterling Silver
Sterling silver is only .925% silver and contains other metals that can cause irritation. It also oxidizes (tarnishes) when it comes in contact with air and body fluids. The fact that silver is soft increases the risk of small non-visible nicks and scratches in the metal that can become a harbor for bacterial growth. Sterling silver is recommended for well-established earlobe piercings only, and short-term wear. Silver-plated jewelry is not recommended at all.
  • Gold
Similar to silver, gold is soft and can have imperfections that can breed bacteria. “Higher grades” of gold (such as 24K), which are considered better because they contain less nickel, are actually softer and become a higher risk when worn in piercings. Solid gold is only recommended for well-healed piercings and for those that have a history of being able to wear gold without irritation. Gold plated, however, is not recommended.
  • Surgical Stainless Steel (SSS)
316L or 316LVM are the only acceptable grades of stainless steel for the use of body jewelry. 316L is implant-grade surgical stainless steel â€" it is probably the most common and most widely used metal for body piercings. 316LVM is the same as 316L, but has the added advantage of having been melted in a vacuum. That means it has a virtually flawless finish and less chance of even minor alloy inclusions, which can irritate the wearer. It should be noted, however, that even SSS does contain enough nickel to cause problems for someone very sensitive to it. Many European countries have banned the use of SSS for new piercings because of the high rate of allergic reactions. If you’re wearing SSS jewelry and are having problems with irritation or a new piercing that just won’t heal, it is possible that you have a very low tolerance of nickel and might want to try niobium or titanium.
  • Niobium
The next step up from 316L SSS. It’s a little heavier than SSS and also stronger. The price tag is also slightly heftier, but a happy medium between SSS and titanium for many. Niobium body jewelry is usually anodized (dipped in a chemical electrolyte and then exposed to an electrical current, which creates an array of colors depending on voltage and light refraction) Niobium is non-reactive and most people can wear it in new or healed piercings with no sensitivity issues.
  • Titanium
The hardest and highest grade of metal with virtually no presence of nickel (less than .05%). The strength of the metal makes it practically impervious to scratches and imperfections. Titanium is also the most expensive metal used for body jewelry, but is certainly worth the price for someone who is hyper-sensitive to nickel-containing metals and can’t wear anything else. Titanium can also be anodized and comes in a wide variety of colors.
Low-Quality Novelty “Body Jewelry”
Please beware of novelty shops and costume jewelry shops selling so-called “body jewelry”. Even if they have the best intentions, these store owners are not body piercing experts and many times purchase low-grade jewelry because they are popular and a quick-sell. Some of them might even claim to be 316L steel, but these items are often mass-produced by machines, not inspected for imperfections and potentially harmful. There is a reason these jewelry items are so inexpensive â€" high quality body jewelry costs more because better materials and quality workmanship are used to produce them. Don’t be fooled by imitators or lower prices â€" it’s just not worth it to end up with an infected piercing because of it.

Personal Experience - Finding the Perfect Tattoo
Feb 21st 2012, 11:04

Finding the Perfect Tattoo

I have been fascinated by tattoos since I was a kid, and part of me always wanted to get tattooed. Of course, the other part of me, the one that kept nagging me over what family and friends would say, would always prevail.

As time went on, the desire to be tattooed simply would not go away; and as I got older, every time I'd see somebody with tattoos (especially somebody younger than me), I'd chide myself for being such a sissy!

The last straw came during the autumn of 1998 when one of by best friends pulled up his left sleeve and showed me the "broken heart with bleeding dagger" tattoo on his upper left arm and shoulder, which he told me was a birthday present from a tenant of his. This was at a stop for dinner during a round-trip drive from Connecticut to Pennsylvania and back to take his daughter home (his ex-wife has sole custody). He slept most of the way back (he had already worked a full shift before we left, and fortunately for me it was my day off), and when, after we pulled into his driveway, he said he didn't know how to thank me, I told him maybe he could get me a tattoo for my birthday. He didn't think I was the type, and said as much.

For the next year or so I searched through books, magazines and the Internet, looking for that perfect first tattoo. They say that if you are indeed worthy of being tattooed, then the tattoo gods will guide you to it. I must have been worthy, for finally, in a picture of a shop window in a Chris Wroblewski book, my eye was struck by an eagle on a flash board. This was it!

My approach was to proceed from the assumption that this would be my one and only tattoo (even though in the back of my mind I hoped that it wouldn't!), and considered all the things I would want in a tattoo if this indeed were to be the only one. I knew for certain that I wanted it to be "traditional" in concept, with the thick black outline, and as colorful as possible. What I ended up with was what I called an eagle with tropical plumage (although the artist considered it "tie-dyed", something which this child of the '60s didn't mind at all!).

Finally, on Friday, January 14, 2000, at 7pm, my lifelong dream of being tattooed finally came true. My friend came along with me (as he had done the previous Tuesday night to show the artist what I had in mind and make the appointment). I did not hold him to making it a (much belated) birthday present (he is paying child support, after all!); however, for Christmas, my father had given me two $50 bills in a card. I derived much satisfaction from the fact that those two $50 bills were among the other bills I handed over to the artist before we got started (this shop works solely on a "full amount in cash only" basis; and after seeing that recent Visa Debit Card commercial, it's easy to understand why!).

It seems that for many people who are considering getting tattooed, the one thing that holds them back is fear of how much it will hurt. Now, I am in no ways impervious to pain; but, believe it or not, the biggest surprise I got out of the whole tattoo experience was the realization of how much it DIDN'T hurt. Granted, I got the tattoo on my upper left arm and shoulder (which, as the artist told me, is probably the least painful area of the body for getting tattooed); but I simply did not find it to be painful at all. The artist had told me that I would feel the outlining more than the color-shading, but I found that the opposite was the case (maybe I'm just weird?). And even at its "worst", I simply could not characterize the sensation as being in any way "painful" (indeed, I found it to be stimulating in a most pleasant way!).

Will this be my one-and-only tattoo? Definitely not! Thinking in terms of a sun design for the other arm to complement the eagle, I again began a search, this time for that perfect second tattoo. This time it was on the Internet that the tattoo gods led me to two designs which I have put together as a sort of hybrid: a multi-colored "traditional" sun being eclipsed by a smaller Celtic-style sun (but this one replacing the green-gray and white inks with blank skin background to blue-gray and yellow inks with red background). When will I get it inked? Well, I'm now waiting on my friend. He too wants a second tattoo (a traditional "sword with snake"), and he wants us to get tattooed together; the problem is, he hasn't as yet scraped together the necessary funds (oh, those child support payments!); but as soon as he does....

After that, I'm considering a dolphin armband below the sun (inspired by a coffee mug my friend has!), and then....

My advice to anyone who has ever wanted to get a tattoo (especially anyone who is seriously considering getting a tattoo): DO IT! Of course, before you do, be absolutely certain about the design and where you want it, and that you choose your artist wisely and well. My one and only regret about the whole experience is that I didn't do it years ago. When I see my tattoo now (and look at the design of that still-to-be-inked "hybrid sun" and contemplate how that dolphin armband would look below it), I think of the joy it brings me now, tinged with the thoughts of how much more joy it would have brought me had I not waited so long.

May the tattoo gods be with you!

-Ron

Battle of the Scratchers
Feb 18th 2012, 11:04

I've been reading a lot lately about "scratchers" fighting for their right to tattoo. A scratcher, basically, is someone who taught him/herself the art of tattooing without the benefit of an apprenticeship under a professional artist. This may sound harmless enough in itself, but "scratchers" have been scrutinized under a very close microscope lately, and have been coming under serious attack by tattoo artists all over. I thought I'd give the subject a little attention myself.

The art of tattooing has long been a trade which traditionally was handed down from generation to generation through apprenticeships. A student would work under the supervision and training of the master, and in return for free labor, the master would train the student. Needless to say, that long-standing tradition is gone. Apprenticeships these days are as follows: The student pays (usually a very large sum) in return for his education, and the master, in return....well, he STILL gets free labor. And many times, as I'm seeing a lot of now...the artists offering apprenticeships are NOT masters. Many times, they are new to trade themselves, and are using "apprenticeships" as a way to create revenue, rather than as a way to create future masters of the trade.

So, why apprentice? Well, unfortunately we live in a day and age where tattooing could literally be the death of a customer if proper procedures are not strictly carried out. Needles and equipment must be properly sterilized, cross-contamination and strict sterilization techniques must be adhered to, or disease can spread as quickly as wildfire.Spreading blood-born pathogens is a quick way to kill a client, AND the reputation of the entire profession of tattooing. If you think that the only thing you'd learn as an apprentice is how to stick a needle in someone...think again! There is so much to be learned, and many of these things simply cannot be learned just by reading a book. If you think you're ready to start tattooing on your own, answer the following questions:

  • What are the laws in your city/state on tattooing?
  • What certifications and/or licenses are required to tattoo legally in your city/state?
  • What is the procedure of operating an autoclave? What temperature must the autoclave reach and for how long?
  • What is a blood-born pathogen and how do you prevent the spread of it, and cross-contamination?
  • How do you thoroughly clean and disinfect needles and tubes before autoclaving?
  • What layer of epidermis of the skin must you NOT enter to prevent scarring of a tattoo?
  • What is plasma, and what does the leakage of plasma during a tattoo indicate?

These are only a few of the things that are absolutely necessary for a tattoo artist to know, and if you can't answer all of these questions with concise understanding, you are not ready to be a tattoo artist!Go get an apprenticeship!

Now, don't get me wrong..I don't think all apprentices need to be taught how to draw! Some of the most fabulous artwork comes from "scratchers" and new apprentices. The reason that western tattoos have evolved so much over the years is because so many new faces have been added to the roster, and because they didn't have someone standing over there shoulders saying "You can't do that!", they have found a wonderful world of variety, color, and effects that old school tattoos cannot hold a candle to.

The aforementioned, however, is not a reason to go off and try to learn how to tattoo on your own. Gain experience from a master, pay your dues, put in your time and dedication to the art, and learn how to do it right.

That also puts a burden on the tattoo artists already out there. You cannot look down on a scratcher if you turn away that eager young man/woman that came into your shop wanting an apprenticeship. If you want the next generation of tattooists to be trained in the traditional way, it is your responsibility to make sure that opportunity is there! And remember, too, your apprentice is not a walking cash flow. They are our future.
