Step 1: Getting Ready | Before you color, you will want to bleach your hair to get the best color results. Dark hair will not show up these colors nearly as well as light hair. Bleaching also dries the hair causing the color to take better. Check the Bleaching Guide for more details. To color, you will need one bottle of Special Effects hair color (your choice of color), a pair of protective gloves, a plastic bowl and an applicator brush. This color is EXTREMELY concentrated - only squeeze out about 1/4 of the bottle at a time so as not to waste any. There is no mixing required with Special Effects - just put some in a bowl and you're ready to go! | | 
Step 2: Applying | Drape a towel around your neck (expect it to get ruined - don't use a good towel). You could do this yourself, but having a friend help you makes it a lot easier. Put the gloves on and start applying the color. Go as quickly as you can so it all covers evenly. At least with my hair, I found the areas right around my ears and around my hairline to be the most stubborn. There is plenty of color in that little bottle, so don't be afraid to use it. After you have completely colored the hair, just sit and wait for 15 minutes. You don't need to wear a heat cap or wait a long time - this stuff is so easy! | | 
Step 3: Rinsing | This part is more difficult than it sounds. You WILL need a friend to do this for you if at all possible. One thing you will notice about this color is that it bleeds a lot. You will need to rinse for several minutes with warm water before the water will start running even slightly clear. A friend will be able to see this a lot easier than you. Keep rinsing until the water runs clear. Then shampoo your hair to get the last bits of color residue out of your hair. I had to shampoo twice to get the bubbles to stop turning pink. Don't worry though - as much color runs down the sink, you don't lose anything on your head! | | 
Step 5: Finished! | After you have rinsed, shampooed and rinsed again, your hair is done. Towel dry (with a dark towel or one that you don't mind getting color on it). Then go look in the mirror and freak out! The first time I saw mine in the mirror I was in shock! Oh, in case you're wondering - this color here is called Cherry Bomb Red (by Special Effects). | Well, here is me with my Cherry Bomb Red! Actually I would call it more Cherry Bomb Pink than Red, but I love it! Some things to keep in mind are: Every time you rinse or wash your hair, it's going to bleed. Your hands will be pink if you use gel on your hair and rub it in with your hands. The color fades a little bit with each wash, and will last somewhere around 6 weeks. Don't wear good clothes or use good towels when washing or styling your hair. |
