When to Break Up with Your Tattoo Artist: The Telltale Signs
Sep 11th 2013, 18:13

There are many obvious signs that may point to a break-up between you and your tattoo artist. Are you ignoring the telltale red flags? Take a look at the following clues that it's time to kiss your artist goodbye, and move onto new talent. It's out there!

1. They no longer listen. Sure they have talent, but is their main agenda to express it rather than capture your ideas and suggestions? Don't forget you'll be wearing their masterpiece for a lifetime. Make sure your ideas coincide with your artist's. If you are on separate paths, perhaps it is time to bid farewell.

2. Me, me me: Have you ever had a talkative massage therapist? If not you're in luck, if you have, you get it. Your artist should be professional and partake in conversation that engages the both of you. If they're rambling on about their personal life, awards, cats or dogs or what they ate for lunch, maybe they aren't really paying attention to your body art. Although no one wants to hear your life story perse, the tattoo session is about YOU.

3. Unsterile: This is an obvious one. If your artist's safety precautions are questionable, the work should be refused. No questions asked!

4. Cancellations/No shows: Sure your artist likes to party like a rock star, but so do you, and you still showed up for your appointment. Fire any artist that makes reliability a non-priority. Your time and money are better spent elsewhere.

5. The work sucks: OK, they are your high school friend and this is a touchy subject. Just because you know an artist personally doesn't mean you should allow their amateur tattoos to mark on your body. With class, refuse amateurs and anyone practicing in the basement so to speak. Your body is worth so much more. Just tell them you have a few artists in mind for your next tattoo and they should get the hint. Even if you have to say it every single time.

Although breaking up with your artist is never easy, remember your worth! There is a sea of tattooing talent and you are certain to find the artist that makes both you and your body art a priority. That's something worth putting your money on.
