Question: How Do I Choose a Meaningful Tattoo?

I would like a tattoo that has personal significance. Each time I look at tattoo designs I like the actual image but can't relate to it. How can I plan a tattoo that has more symbolic meaning to me?

Answer: Tattoos are a beautiful way to express your uniqueness and individuality. You are right that the abundance of tattoo designs and ideas can make it difficult to choose a significant tattoo rather than just a design that you like. Many people select their art just for that reason and there is nothing wrong with that. Sometimes you just like a tattoo because you like it.

However if you seek something more rewarding on a personal level that really represents your life, you'll need to channel your thoughts and come up with a unique idea.

Birthdates and wedding dates and other significant marks are one example of a more meaningful tattoo. These dates can also be written in different characters such as Roman Numerals. Zodiac symbols are always significant and will not change, so they make an ideal suggestion. Along with birthstones, every birth month has its own flower and animal. Either of which can be significant. You can also go the route of the Chinese horoscope and tattoo the one of twelve animals that represents your birth year. You can read more about the Chinese zodiac here.

Portrait tattoos of children, spouses and parents also make very meaningful tattoo designs. These tattoos looks very timeless when done in the black and grey style. You can also frame your portraits with filigree details that will create more of a Victorian cameo style. You can also place pictures in a locket for a beautiful jewelry inspired tattoo. If you have portrait work done, it is imperative that you seek a talented artist in this style of tattooing. Portraits can be very bad. Be sure to look at their portfolio and also seek out artist recommendations from reputable sources.

Verse and lettering tattoos can express your favorite sentiment and be worn as a daily affirmation. Placed on your inner wrist or forearm where it is most visible, script tattoos can be inspired by song verse, poetry or book quotes. If you have children you may consider asking them to write their names. You can then tattoo their handwriting on your body for a really personal name tattoo idea.

If you are lost of design ideas or just can't seem to decide on the perfect fit, take the time to find an artist that will work with you to create something unique. Once you've revealed a few personal considerations, most tattoo artists will begin to brainstorm a design based on your desired placement, size and then your interests or hobbies. No matter how good their suggestion is, make sure it really fits you before committing. Don't be in a hurry to commit to a design, especially if you want a tattoo with meaning.

Tattoo magazines provide plenty of visual inspiration. Keep a tattoo notebook filled with all of the design ideas that you desire and then when the time is right for your next piece of art, you have plenty of ideas and musings ready to work with. You should also consider where you want to place your tattoo as that will influence your meaningful tattoo design. Some people group several meaningful tattoos together or even plan their next tattoos with a larger scope in mind. This is really the best way to proceed with your body art. Once you have a plan of your art style you can begin to get inspired for design ideas that you can be certain will bare more significance and meaning later. Favorite movies, book characters and even video games also inspire meaningful tattoos. From Pokémon to superheroes, the tattoo industry has broadened in both style and talent. Today's artists are exposed to many more opportunities within the industry as it becomes more socially acceptable. Planning a tattoo with meaning is worth it. You'll be wearing your body art for a lifetime, so choose accordingly.
