The Piercing Bible Interview
Nov 17th 2013, 11:15, by tattoo.guide@about.com

The Piercing Bible Interview with Master Piercer Elayne Angel

Author of The Piercing Bible and Master Piercer Elayne Angel is just the person you'd hope to meet if you were interested in getting pierced. After all, she's pierced over 40,000 people in her career and her passion would put anyone at ease.

Perhaps it is the tattooed angel wings upon her back (which are registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office,) or her love and respect for the industry that puts her in a league of her own.

She's passionate, educated and she's got your back.

Elayne is a body modification enthusiast who began her profession at the Gauntlet, the first body piercing studio in the United States.

President of the APP, Association of Professional Piercers and Author of The Piercing Bible which is now in its fourth printing, let's chat.

Since you’ve been credited for starting the pierced tongue trend, what made you want to do it? (I confess; I did too)

Elayne: I already had quite a few body piercings already when I saw a photo of a man named Tattoo Samy. He was from Frankfurt, Germany and he had a tongue piercing that had been done in 1978 by Jim Ward, owner and founder of Gauntlet (the world's first piercing specialty studio).

The image was in a PFIQ Magazine which was published by Gauntlet, where I later worked. After I assisted Jim in doing a tongue piercing on a truck driver named Dennis in the early 1980s at a piercing demonstration I knew I had to have mine done.

Dennis didn't end up keeping his in, so after my tongue was pierced (I think it was 1985) it ended up being among the first to be permanently worn in the US. I believe I was also first to wear a tongue tip piercing, and to have multiple tongue piercings.

From viewing that first photo I was totally fascinated by tongue piercing and after I got mine I just loved it. One was so great, then two was more than twice as much fun, and that's how I ended up with so many. I was so incredibly enthusiastic and passionate about tongue piercing that I spread the word to encourage other people to try it.

I still wear all 5 of my tongue piercings. When I recently visited the dentist he asked me how it was possible that I had a mouth full of metal for literally decades, but no damage to my teeth. I explained that my piercings are properly placed, I wear jewelry that fits closely to my tongue (it is VERY IMPORTANT to downsize after initial swelling is gone), and I don't click the bars or balls against my teeth or chew on them.

Did your interest in body piercing stem from any medical passions?

Elayne:Yes! My father is a doctor, and my favorite dinnertime conversations were always about whatever interesting cases he'd seen in his practice.

I poured over all of his medical books as a child and was quite the amateur surgeon. As a young child I did "autopsies" on dead fish using medical instruments I got from my father. I also operated on tomatoes, which may be why I can't eat them to this day.

I think if I hadn't managed to create a career as a piercer, I would have gone into some aspect of the medical field.

As President of the Association of Professional Piercers; your most important duty is

Elayne: To oversee the direction of the organization and make sure we're fulfilling our mission of disseminating information about safe piercing.

The most important message in your book, The Piercing Bible:

Elayne: Educate yourself so you can make good decisions and get hygienic, successful piercings, because not all piercers are competent or conscientious.

How many book cover ideas did you play with? Be honest; which was your favorite?

Elayne: The book was not self-published, so I didn't really have much control of the cover art, the quantity of photos and illustrations, or even the number of pages in the book. In fact, when the publisher contacted me after receiving my proposal, my manuscript was 157,000 words. They asked if I could cut it down to 100,000! I told them that I really wanted to get the book published, but it would not be the comprehensive volume that needed to be available on this subject, even with the most judicious editing. Ultimately, we compromised at 133,000 words.

I'm happy with the current cover, but along the way the publisher's designer was playing with images of body jewelry to create some of the letters in the book's title. It wasn't working at all and I actually regretted signing the contract at one point. But it all turned out okay in the end.

If you could keep only one tattoo, it would be:

Elayne: Ooh, that's a tough question! I really had to ponder this one for a while because I really enjoy all of my tattoos.

I think it would be my mermaid tail. I just love the softness and the subtle variations of the colors, and the way the fins and scales accent my curves. Juli Moon did an exceptional job. Even though I consider it to be a single tattoo, it does cover my whole lower body--about 50% of me! So if I kept just that one, I wouldn't feel too naked.

Do you like the educator/author, piercer or role of the APP board position best? You wear lots of hats; which one fits best?

Elayne: Overall I think the educator hat fits me most comfortably--and that one seems to go along pretty well with everything I do. I have a passion for teaching and providing information. I love that my formative years in the industry under Jim Ward and Gauntlet fostered this type of free exchange. I'm always surprised when people are secretive about their industry knowledge because my whole career and lifestyle is based on openly sharing.

What’s on your iPod right now? (The song you keep replaying)

Elayne: It's a song called All I Want by E.G. Daily (who is a friend of my husband's) from her 1999 album "Tearing Down the Walls." It may be a little obscure, but I really like her music--and she's a really cool lady. If you're not familiar with her work, you should check it out!

You travel in a gypsy caravan and pierce. What’s the name your studio and how much do you charge?

Elayne: Well, more accurately, I fly in and out of Merida where I live to various places and pierce in the studios of my colleagues. I owned and operated Rings of Desire, Inc. in the French Quarter of New Orleans for over 12 years, and it closed after Hurricane Katrina. So when I'm home, I work full time online answering piercing questions, blogging, and sharing piercing information. And I pre-book the piercing appointments I do when I hit the road.

I usually fly somewhere, pierce like a maniac, and then come home to recover. I just got back from a five-day work trip to Philadelphia and I did 104 piercings on 87 clients. They came from 12 different US states and also Japan and the UK to get pierced by me. What an honor!

I'm traveling from out of the country, so regardless of placement on the body, my piercing fee is $100 for an initial piercing, plus the jewelry. Additional piercings on the same person in the same session are $50. each (plus jewelry).

You live in Merida, Mexico. Has your body art been influenced by the Mayan culture there?

Elayne: By the time I moved to Mexico I already had almost all of the body art I now wear. But my most recent tattoo was definitely influenced by Mayan art and culture. I got a sun ray design across the tops of both shoulders for my 50th birthday. I think it is sort of ironic and interesting that I ended up living in a place with such a strong tradition of body art and modification.

For every piercing trend that comes and goes, this one will always be timeless:

Elayne: Nipples. This was the most popular piercing when I first started working at Gauntlet in the 1980s, and I've done them throughout my career. Even though ninety-some percent of my current work is genital piercings, nipples are the next most common spot that I do.

Name your piercing that hurt the most (ouch) or felt the best.

Elayne: My conch (ear cartilage) piercing. It was done at 10 gauge with the old style Gauntlet needles, which weren't as sharp as they are nowadays. The back of the piercing looked like I had been shot with a small caliber bullet, and the crunch was heard across the studio. Not sure if this is TMI, but I have a clitoral glans piercing (not my hood) and it wasn't even as painful as my conch piercing. Then we made the mistake of putting a matte finish charcoal niobium ring in it. Oh, it was agonizing!

Do you think intimate piercings for women will become trendy?

Elayne: It's already happened. I can tell you that I pierced the hoods of an entire sorority when I had my studio in New Orleans! That was interesting.

As I mentioned, about 95% of the piercings I do are female genital piercings. That's my specialty and it has been for some years now. Interestingly, a large percentage of my clients are mature women who have no other piercings or body art. They are actively seeking sexual enhancement. This is definitely not a "trendy" type of thing for them. It is very private for many of these women, and they take the time to educate themselves and they are motivated by something that is deeply meaningful to them. "Trendy" fits with impulsiveness and something short-lived, but for most of my clients, it isn't about that at all.

Why are there angel wings on your back?

Elayne: I couldn't help it.

In the early 1980s I was inspired by seeing a woman who had a full back dragon tattoo. I was really stricken by the impact of a large, single-image back piece and began to consider getting one for myself. As I pondered what I might get, the idea came to me of neoclassical angel wings. It hit me like a ton of bricks and I knew I had to do it. I felt that it was right for me. I've always had flying dreams that were very positive and exciting for me. They felt really important in my life.

But this was the '80s, and there were not a lot of heavily tattooed women at that time. I visited the artist that did the bold dragon tattoo I so admired: Bob Roberts of Spotlight Tattoo in Los Angles. He drew a little sketch after I described to him what I was seeking and he totally shared my vision. I proceeded to think about it--every day--for the next year. When I still wanted it as badly as I had when the idea first came to me, I set an appointment and did it. I had NO idea I was embarking on something that would later spark a tattoo trend!

Is there a fetish world associated with body piercing?

Elayne: Yes, for sure, though obviously, not everyone who gets pierced takes this approach to it.

Does any form of body modification scare you?

Elayne: Anything to do with the eyes freaks me out--tattooing the sclera, eyelid piercings…. I just can't get past the risk of losing eyesight for body art or modification.

Your favorite page in your book, The Piercing Bible?

Elayne: Ah! There's over 300 pages in there, so that's really a tough question. It took me about five years to write the book. So each one of those pages is kind of like my offspring, together we went through a long gestation and painful delivery…. I can't pick just one.

So, the preface (page ix) is among my favorites because I get to be a little more personal and explain why I wrote the book.

I don't think I'd call it a "favorite" per se, but there's one I refer people to quite often: "The Worst Piercing Story" on page 119. It tells a cautionary tale of the disaster that happened following cheek piercings.

And another one of my favorites is actually the final page, which talks about being a liaison to the rest of the world when you're visibly pierced, and about the future of piercing.

What makes a great body piercer?

Elayne: A person with a deep passion for piercing and a true love of people, coupled with fine technical skills and an abundance of experience. Patience and empathy are crucial, and when combined with sound communication skills produce an important quality: a soothing bedside manner.

How can body piercing enhance or distract from less desirable features; such as facial scars, prominent nose, off-set eyes, etc.

Elayne: Here's a brief excerpt from The Piercing Bible that addresses this question:

Aesthetics

Jewelry will bring attention to the area in which it is worn. If your ears resemble those of Dumbo the Flying Elephant, you might not want all eyes drawn to them with conspicuous jewelry. (Or maybe you do!) Perhaps an eyebrow piercing to bring the focus away from your large ears would be preferable?

Conversely, if you have never liked the shape or size of your nose, you might consider customizing your nostril with jewelry to make it more pleasing to you.

Then again, if you have a lovely nose, why not embellish it with a glimmering jewel? Whether used to downplay, modify, or highlight a particular feature, your piercing can be personally empowering and gratifying.

Gaze in the mirror and envision how a piercing will look on you. Would a ring or stud be best? Does a subtle ornament suit you or would bold jewelry look better? Ask some trusted friends for their opinions. A professional piercer is also a good resource if you have doubts or concerns.

If she wasn’t a body piercer, Elayne Angel would be:

Elayne: A medical professional; probably a doctor like my dad. [Already answered above.]

You moved to a twin city after losing your Louisiana piercing studio from Hurricane Katrina and relocating to Yucatan. Was that intentional?

Elayne: No, it was completely a coincidence. Or at least I didn't realize it at the time. Not only are they sister cities, but they are both located on the same longitude! And we bought our house in Mexico just a few weeks before Katrina hit! So we were actually planning to move. My only unanswered question was what I was going to do with my piercing studio, and the storm answered that for me.

Speaking of sisters, what is your best “sisters” tattoo design suggestion? I need some creative inspiration for my next article.

Elayne: How about a matching, traditional "Mom & Dad" tattoo? I also liked this butterfly design (two halves of a butterfly that placed together make whole), or some other that makes a new complete image when the tattoos are adjacent to one another. It is a cute "sister" concept.

Thank you for the interview and best wishes for continued happiness and success with The Piercing Bible.

Elayne: Thank you so much! The Piercing Bible is in its fourth print run, and actually sold more copies last year than the first year it came out, which is pretty amazing! And it is also available as an eBook. I'm thrilled that people are reading it and getting well educated about piercings.

I also wanted to recommend Jim Ward's book Running the Gauntlet, which is fascinating, and it is a great read for pierces who have an interest in the history of the industry.

Tattoo and Pain Coping Advice
Nov 17th 2013, 11:15, by tattoo.guide@about.com

If you're planning on your first tattoo, you'll likely need tattoo pain and coping advice to feel comfortable with the process from start to finish. It's important to remember everyone handles pain differently. It's difficult to explain how much a tattoo hurts or even how to handle it as there are many diferent methods and variables that come into play.

Here's the good news. You can do it. Look around you at all the people who have been inked and you'll see just how many others have endured and survived the process, many of which have gone back repeatedly for even bigger and more detailed designs. Hence the phrase that tattoos can be addictive.

Tattoos are a painful pleasure. Yes they hurt, but since it's self-inflicted many people find the pain bearable once they know what to expect. Unlike a tragic accident or the natural pains of childbirth, a tattoo is premeditated, pre-planned, and you can even select a body area that's less sensitive for your first tattoo. All of these things can help make you feel much more in charge of the tattooing process which is helpful in handling the experience.

How to Cope

Mind over matter is really the key to dealing with any sort of pain. If you focus on the discomfort and invest your energy there, you are much more likely to feel every single sensation and react strongly to it. Try to relax and practice breathing techniques that help center your mind and body and put you at ease. Some people like to listen to music during their tattoo. If you have a music player and headphones and you don't obstruct your tattooist as he works, this will work wonders to take your mind off of the sensations.

Products for Pain Management

In addition to basic relaxation methods, many artists will use a numbing cream on the area being tattooed to help alleviate some of the discomfort. Ink-Eeeze manufactures a wonderful product that many artists rely on specifically for larger or more painful areas. While some people prefer to go without a numbing product, others believe the added help is beneficial in getting though the design process. Another thing to consider is artist touch. Some artists have built a reputation for their gentle hand. If you hear of one that is rumored to have a gentle approach you may find them worth it, especially for a first, or a detailed piece located on a sensitive area.

Areas to Avoid

If you are going in for your first tattoo, don't push it and opt for one of the more painful tattoo spots. Instead, opt for a tattoo on one of the least painful areas of the body, such as on your arm, outer thighs and legs.

Size Considerations

In addition to tattoo placement, be mindful of the size of your tattoo. Larger pieces are best avoided until you are familiar with tattoo pain. In the event that you choose a larger piece, your artist may find it necessary to break the process into several sessions as needed to help you cope with the discomfort.

Your first tattoo should be of an average size so that you can better handle and tolerate the event. Once you've added a few tattoos under your belt so to speak, you can begin to plan on areas and pieces that are much larger in scale with full confidence that you can sit through the session, some of which may be hours long. Even then, you may find it necessary to work in increments anyway. Many people have large unfinished tattoos. Sometimes this is because they have artists who are not available due to traveling or convention work. Other times it is because the tattoo became unaffordable and painfully unbearable. If you plan ahead and are reasonable, you should be able to complete the tattoo process the first time, and with proper aftercare, reap a beautiful result.

soccer dad

This post goes out to a few fine men and you know you are, calling the kettle black. You are married to a soccer mom but somehow you think your tattoos make you a little cooler. So here's a wake up call. They don't. And I'm really tired of the industry using the term "soccer mom" to describe the mainstream popularity of tattoos amongst women of soccer mom age.

I am nearing my forties. I have two kids. I look damn good. I can think of a few other acronyms or terms to more accurately describe myself. Yet somehow this played out phrase is still be used to describe mothers of our generation.

NOW it's "exciting" that soccer moms are getting tattooed. First off, most of us "soccer moms" got tattooed about twenty years ago. We just didn't have the same abundance of talent and styles that have flooded the industry. So maybe some of these hot mommies are just now covering up their old designs. Or opting for something that's actually meaningful the first time around. Ever think of that?

My oldest son plays soccer and my youngest will as well. He also took martial arts and has many other hobbies and interests. We are not a world of SOCCER moms. Just because we are moms with kids, who may or may not play soccer. (Umm.. ever think of that too?) We are women, and at times like this we will roar.

So...on that note I'd like to pass the torch and start calling all of you middle age fathers soccer dads. Believe me, the trend can start. Women, the next time a man calls you a soccer mom, simply ask if he is a soccer dad and wait for his reaction. We will ditch this stereotype together. Like many tired terms and phrases such as BAM! BOOM! and the word EPIC, soccer mom is destined to cease when you stop answering to it.

To all my SOCCER DADS...how many tattoos do YOU have? Cast your vote below. (And yes I must confess, considering the season I almost called you Football Dads. Almost.)

End of rant. Kick it!

Standard Upper and Lower Lip Piercings
Nov 16th 2013, 11:12, by tattoo.guide@about.com

Definition: Standard lip piercings are pretty simple - a single piercing just outside the perimeter of the upper or lower lip that is decorated with either a CBR, circular barbell, or labret stud. It can be a single piercing or multiple piercings - there are no rules. Some of them may have special names like Snake Bites, but they're all really just variations of the standard lip ring.

There are some things you should know before getting a lip ring, though. Most lip piercings, except the vertical labret, are both external and oral, meaning that you'll have to care for it with two sets of treatment. So, it's a little extra responsibility when it comes to keeping it clean and encouraging it to heal.

Also, since a portion of the jewelry is inside your mouth (whether it be the back side of a ring or the flat disc of a labret stud), that always poses a risk of damage to your teeth and/or gums. It means you need to be extra diligent about your dental care and check every day for signs of wear or deterioration. If you see any, you should probably remove the piercing. I know that's not a pleasant prospect, but severe tooth damage and gum erosion is painful, costly, and sometimes irreversible.

Another thing I like to stress, particularly with lip and oral piercings, is don't smoke! Your body heals much better when you don't smoke anyway, but lip and oral piercings get particularly irritated by cigarette smoke and all the nasty toxins that are in it, not to mention it hurts like hell.

You should also know that a piercing fistula for a CBR or circular barbell will be somewhat curved, while a labret stud piercing is straight. Because of that, it's not a good idea to try to switch jewelry styles, because they won't rest properly in the healed fistula, which could irritate it.

I recommend nothing smaller than a 16 gauge piercing for the lip; 14 gauge for those with full lips.

Neck Tattoos on Women
Nov 16th 2013, 11:12, by tattoo.guide@about.com

Question: Neck Tattoos on Women

Is there something bad about getting a neck tattoo? My friend wants to get a tattoo that starts at I guess it would be the base of the neck and runs down part of her spine. Her husband says that is "gang" like. What do you think?

Answer: I think this is a personal opinion. I understand your friend's partner's concern as the neck is a very prominent area. I would recommend that she start the tattoo closer to her hairline at the back of her neck so that it can be covered more easily should she decide to. Then she can wear scarves, a longer hair style or even collared shirts to basically keep this sort of tattoo discreet whenever she feels.

As far as a gang tattoo placement, you are right that the neck is a common spot. But that does not mean that she will look like a gangster simply because of it. Most of her style will be based on the way she carries herself, dresses and the types of clothes that she wears. I've seen many organic or nature inspired tattoos on earthy gals that run clear up their backs and to their necks and you would never think they were in any sort of gang so it really comes down to style.

Decision choices are also going to play a big part of the consideration in a neck tattoo. If you are not already familiar with, be sure to read Five Popular Tattoo Art Styles. Gang style tattoos are often the original prison style tattoos as documented in the movie Tattoo Nation. These designs include fine line black and grey roses, hearts, portraits, stars and of course script tattoos. If she opts for something like feathers , cherry blossoms , a tree tattoo or a dragon for example, her design would not have that traditional look to it, and could rather be quite colorful and interesting. Another feminine option is a permanent Henna style tattoo if she likes delicate and intricate flowers with vines.

Next I'd like to remind your friend to take the time to seek out a reputable tattoo artist for the job. If she already has some ideas, great. If not, a tattoo artist can help her decide her options regarding the tattoo placement. Make sure you look at the artist's portfolio and ALWAYS follow their proper tattoo aftercare instructions.

Because of this large tattooed area, wearing a sunblock with a minimum of SPF 30 is necessary to prevent fading of her tattoo. Especially during summer and swimsuit season where her back and neck will be exposed to the elements.

Neck tattoos are not for everyone. Just like a hand, wrist or face tattoo they are not for the commitment-phobic and they make a bold statement. Hopefully with some time and suitable thought she can find a design that will reflect her personality and without any doubt, add to the individual that she is.

I hope this helps and best of luck!

Top 5 Bohemian Inspired Tattoos
Nov 16th 2013, 11:12, by tattoo.guide@about.com

The following top 5 bohemian inspired tattoo designs are perfect for your wandering and wild spirit. From feather tattoos to gypsy girls, it's fair to say that not all that wander are lost.

Bohemian, in definition, is an artist or writer who sets about in life following their own course of unconventional living.

Whether you park your gypsy caravan out back, or simply adore the lifestyle and fashion of this unbridled group, a bohemian inspired tattoo is a meaningful choice that depicts change for cause, a spirited lifestyle and vagabond roots.

So long as a compass on your wrist is there to remind you there's no place quite like home, you're bound to feel connected to someplace, even if it's merely where you hang your hat.

1. Peace symbols

Peace must be found within before it can be found anywhere else in the world. Whether you're part of the original 1960's Woodstock era, where peace-loving hippies today proudly share stories of bra-burning, or just a free spirit who wants to promote the sense of inner well-being, a peace tattoo is just that, peaceful.

2. Feather tattoos

Feather tattoos are yet another whimsical bohemian inspired tattoo design that's sure to sing to your wandering spirit. For the true nature lover, a bird or feather tattoo can represent many different things. An owl, for example, can offer protection in the night sky while an Old School eagle feather can represent bravery and Americana pride; perfect for your peace-loving spirit.

3. Compass tattoo

North, south, east or west, a compass tattoo knows your heart best. Embrace your love of travel and adventure with a design depicting direction. Whether you're pioneering a new life path or simply want to remind yourself there's no place like home, a compass tattoo will keep you from losing your place in this world.

4. Dream catcher

Image Cc Ishawalia@Flickr
Bearing origin from old Native American legend, a dream catcher spins a web for nocturnal peaceful slumber. When hung over the bed, Sacred Hoops, as they are still sometimes called, were believed to trap all bad dreams within their web so that only peaceful dreams could pass through. Dream catchers incorporate feathers and often beads. Think about personalizing these small details to make your tattoo even more dreamy.

5. Gypsy girl

An old school gypsy girl tattoo takes the cake for the top 5 bohemian inspired tattoo designs. Even if you're not connected to an original old school gypsy, you can add symbolic details to your girl to make her all the more significant. From changing her hair color to adding jewels in birthstones and scarves with small zodiac symbols, there's many ways to personalize her so that she feels right at home, and speaks to your gypsy soul.

Top 8 Tattoo/Body Art Magazines
Nov 15th 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

Tattoo magazines aren't cheap, so the last thing you want to do is spend several dollars on a zine that isn't worth it. Here's my picks for the best tat rags on the bookstore shelf.

Skin & Ink

Although you won't get a heaping helping of pictures in this periodical, you will get enough to satisfy your craving. Along with high quality photos, you will also be able to feed your mind with information and articles that deal with the historical and signifant aspects of body art in society. It's a perfect blend of eye candy and meaty material.

Tattoo Flash

All pictures, NO ADS, all color. If you want flash and tattoo pictures, you will not be disappointed. This magazine is huge and packed full of both photos and drawings. You'll occasionally find some light reading about a particular artist or collector, but for the most part it is all art.

Skin Art

Skin Art is a real "in your face" kind of magazine. The pictures are large, bold and colorful. They feature some excellent artists and are not afraid to showcase art on the dark or wild side. But you do have to shuffle through a lot of ads to get to the good stuff.

TATTOO

This magazine has been around for a long time and continues to meet the demands of its readers. They'll keep you up with who's who and what's hot, along with entertaining you with plenty of pictures and artist profiles.

Tattoo Savage

Wrapped in plastic and packaged like an adult magazine, you'd expect to find hard core modifications and pornographic photos. But it's actually put together very professionally and features some superb tattoo artistry. Some of the artwork may lean toward the bizarre side, but most issues I let my own kids look at.

Tattoo Revue

While this magazine has sometimes been guilty of putting lousy art on their front cover just because the model was attractive, it's still a pretty good publication. With more color photos and convention coverage, it's an enjoyable publication to browse and read. Not a lot of substantial information or content, but good pictures and quality art.

International Tattoo Art

Although this magazine is actually published right here in the U.S.A., it reaches out and gets a much more global feel of body art. You'll read about conventions overseas and all the wonderful artists on opposite ends of the Earth. The only problem with this magazine is their recent decision to take it upon themselves to censor their magazine by covering nipples and genitals of the collectors and the art.

Tattoos For Women

Although this isn't a really dynamic magazine for it's content or pictures, I had to include it in my top picks list. The body art world is so male-dominated, I really appreciate the effort that goes into making this magazine just for women. The pictures are mostly submissions, so the photo quality is sometimes lacking, but the models and the art are as real as life. I'd call this the most "down to earth" body art publication.

Male Genital: Frenum Piercing

The Frenum is a very popular male piercing, second only to the Prince Albert. Its quick healing time and minimal pain and complications make for a very desirable piercing. The needle pierces through the flexible skin of the underside of the shaft just behind the glans (head) of the penis. There are two other variations of the frenum piercing: The lorum (lower frenum placed at the base of the shaft near the scrotum) and the ladder (several frenum piercings from the base of the shaft to the top).

Lorum Piercing The Lorum is a lower frenum placed at the base of the shaft near the scrotum. Care and healing times are essentially the same, but care should be taken to keep clean, dry and free of pubic hair during healing time.

Frenum Ladder A frenum ladder is a row of several frenum piercings from the base of the shaft up to the top. How many piercings you can wear on your ladder depends on shaft length and skin resilience.

Recommended jewelry:12 to 10 gauge straight barbell, curved barbell or captive bead ring.

Consideration should be given to the gauge size of the jewelry. If you choose to wear captive bead jewelry during sexual intercourse, the piercing should be stretched enough to hold a smaller gauge jewelry to ensure that the bead will be held securely in place. If not, the bead could actually be lost during sexual activity.

Expected healing time: 2 - 4 months

Sexual limitations: Abstinence for at least one week, and careful sexual activity afterward. A condom should be used throughout entire healing process.

Labret Piercings - Guide to Labret Piercings
Nov 15th 2013, 11:11, by tattoo.guide@about.com

Definition: Labret piercings are located directly under the center of your lower lip. They're decorated with stud jewelry (not a ring); otherwise it would just be called a lip piercing. Because it pierces the lip horizontally front to back, it's both a facial and oral piercing, meaning you have to care for it two different ways.

Lowbrets are just like labret piercings, but they rest lower down the chin, being pierced just above the connective tissue that attaches your lower lip to the bottom of your gum line. A lowbret can be centered like a labret, or can be pierced two or three times along this lower gum line. It can be pierced horizontally so that the jewelry protrudes directly out from the source, or it can be angled downward so that a long spike can be worn.

Whether you get a labret or lowbret, you're running a risk of damage to your teeth, gums or both. The flat disk on the back of the labret stud jewelry can rub against the surface of your gums and, depending on the placement, even scratch your teeth. For those who have an oral fixation (meaning you can't resist the urge to play with a foreign item in your mouth) this isn't a good piercing option. It's the constant playing and manipulating of the jewelry that seems to cause most damage rather than the simple existence of the piercing. If you can leave it alone, it probably won't cause you much trouble. It's just important to keep a constant close eye on it and remove the piercing immediately if you start seeing signs of damage. Tooth enamel erosion can lead to sensitivity and decay. Gum recession causes the roots of your teeth to be exposed, which is very painful. Allowing a piercing to continue damaging your teeth and/or gums could lead to a serious and irreversible problem.

Starter jewelry should be a 16 or 14 gauge labret stud. There are typically two different disc sizes, so if one size causes problems you can try going smaller or larger and see if that solves the issue.
