Top Five Reasons Not to Get a Tattoo Nov 4th 2013, 11:15, by tattoo.guide@about.com The following top five reasons not to get a tattoo may help aide in your decision for a piece of permanent body art. While the world of tattooing can be captivating and exciting, it's easy to leap before testing the comfort of the waters. Make sure you consider the following points and determine whether or not you are seriously ready for that tattoo, before it becomes an eternal part of YOU. 1. You Dislike Commitment  It's not just deciding upon a design that takes time, it's the commitment that follows. There are tattoo trends for example, currently feathers and dream catchers along with quote and verse tattoos, that hold the title for trendy rather than perennial designs. But that's not the only thing to worry about. Whether your design idea is hip, fashionable or just statement-making, do you really want to wear it forever? Of course you think you do, and you may even be ready to pay big to prove it. In this case it helps to consider some of your other vanity purchases and where they are at now. Are boots still in closet that you convinced yourself were the best purchase of last season? Worse yet, are they lost under a pile of a few more pairs that were just a little better in some way? If so, commitment may be your area of opportunity. Perhaps change is good for you, so don't tie yourself down. 2. You Can't Decide  On the flipside of the coin is lack of ideas and inspiration. Perhaps you greatly want a piece of body art but have no idea what fits your persona on the long-term horizon. There are so many talented tattoo artists, it can be easy to take them up on their own suggestions and visions and rock them solely because you like their work and tattooing style. That's OK and makes sense to some, especially those that collect work from many artists. But in the end if the idea wasn't yours, the suggestion your own and the style a natural choice, why on earth are you wearing it forever? Your tattoo artist certainly isn't. 3. You Don't Have Money  Besides having to pay for your tattoo, you should also include a tip for your tattoo artist for both their time and their talent. Is it a must? No. But it isn't with a hairdresser or a waiter either. It's just something you do when you receive services that you are satisfied with. Twenty percent of your total tab is always appreciated. If you can't afford that tab, maybe you can't afford the tattoo. Save your pennies and show your appreciation with this grateful gesture. 4. You Don't Know Who You Are Yet  Are you soul searching? That's wonderful. Use the years ahead to discover who you are, what you like, what your music genre is, and things that captivate you, whether than be art or flowers . Then record your memories internally. Read books. Watch films. Go on adventures and pick up little pieces of who you are and study them. Soon the ideas for tattoos that suit you will become crystal clear. Whether it be an insect tattoo, a horror tattoo or a portrait of your mother, know where you came from and who you are before you start inking images on your skin. You'll feel much more confident wearing purposeful tattoos. 5. You Are In a Mental State of Mind Any reputable tattoo artist will not work on anyone who is visibly intoxicated or impaired, but that doesn't mean your buddy down the street who just bought a machine off of the Internet won't want to play while you get to pay. Avoid garage tattoos, especially when alcohol or drugs are involved. From misspells to shoddy work, you're bound to end up with a tattoo you'll regret. In addition, take notice of your mood. Don't ever get tattooed when you are in the wrong mindset. Life, trouble and turmoil can easily affect your mind and inspiration, or lack thereof. If you're having a bad day it may make sense to tattoo a skull and crossbones with phrases about death or morbidity. Yes they can look cool, which makes it even more enticing. But remember your tattoo sends a message to the world. They sort of visually sum you up in one fell swoop. It's often best to deal with your demons alone. It's an inside job. Put your best face forward and go to your happy place before tattooing anything derogatory, morbid, or even offensive images. Focus on living without any regrets by planning carefully and being sober for the process. When the time and design are both right you'll know it. Trust your instincts. |
