This post goes out to a few fine men and you know you are, calling the kettle black. You are married to a soccer mom but somehow you think your tattoos make you a little cooler. So here's a wake up call. They don't. And I'm really tired of the industry using the term "soccer mom" to describe the mainstream popularity of tattoos amongst women of soccer mom age.
I am nearing my forties. I have two kids. I look damn good. I can think of a few other acronyms or terms to more accurately describe myself. Yet somehow this played out phrase is still be used to describe mothers of our generation.
NOW it's "exciting" that soccer moms are getting tattooed. First off, most of us "soccer moms" got tattooed about twenty years ago. We just didn't have the same abundance of talent and styles that have flooded the industry. So maybe some of these hot mommies are just now covering up their old designs. Or opting for something that's actually meaningful the first time around. Ever think of that?
My oldest son plays soccer and my youngest will as well. He also took martial arts and has many other hobbies and interests. We are not a world of SOCCER moms. Just because we are moms with kids, who may or may not play soccer. (Umm.. ever think of that too?) We are women, and at times like this we will roar.
So...on that note I'd like to pass the torch and start calling all of you middle age fathers soccer dads. Believe me, the trend can start. Women, the next time a man calls you a soccer mom, simply ask if he is a soccer dad and wait for his reaction. We will ditch this stereotype together. Like many tired terms and phrases such as BAM! BOOM! and the word EPIC, soccer mom is destined to cease when you stop answering to it.
