Helix Piercings

Definition: Helix piercings (also known as rim piercings) can be anywhere along the curled ridge on the outer edge of the upper ear cartilage. Even an Industrial is essentially a double piercing through the upper and lower helixes. Helix piercings, like all cartilage piercings, are a little more difficult to heal, but still a relatively simple procedure for an experienced piercing technician.

The Helix Orbital is a piercing that is placed from side to side rather than front to back. The procedure requires piercing two holes rather than one. If pierced with a CBR, the jewelry "orbits" the helix like rings around a planet.

The Anti-helix is like other "anti-" piercings in that it is located directly across from the original. In this case, it would be along the curled ridge on the inner edge of the ear, closest to your head.

The range of jewelry for a helix piercing is as diverse as the piercings themselves. There are so many different ways in which the helix can be pierced, either by itself or in conjunction with other locations. A standard Helix piercing, though, usually starts out with a CBR or a small circular barbell.

A good gauge size is usually 16-14 gauge, but it depends on the size of your rim. You want something small enough to fit inside the curled edge without putting any stress on the cartilage. It's best to let your piercer determine what size would be best.
