Wedding ring finger tattoos are a popular and permanent token of love. Often worn in lieu of jewelry, ring finger tattoos make a beautiful and artful choice. While there are several things to consider including the proper healing of a hand tattoo, you should also decide if you think it's bad luck, and determine whether your partner will wear a matching lovers tattoo, and take part in the unique symbolism.

1. Placement

For wedding rings, the band is often worn on the left hand . People who are left-handed sometimes find comfort in wearing their ring on the right hand. For a ring finger tattoo, place the jewelry where you'll appreciate it best. Depending on the size of your tattoo, you may need to work with a larger finger, or whichever hand you prefer to tattoo.

2. Size

Once you've decided on a design idea you can determine the size. Your tattooist will likely adjust it as necessary so that it looks its best. The less details the better for a smaller piece, so stick with a simplistic design for a ring finger tattoo. In addition, consider the idea of a simple initial tattooed in a monogram style rather than a ring altogether. Both partners can honor their shared family name with a single letter finger tattoo.

3. Healing and Fading Hand Tattoos

As your ring finger tattoo heals it is subject to change. Many tattooists will not tattoo the hands for several reasons, and that being one. Hands are in constant motion, and in constant use. Because of this, it's very difficult to heal the area properly. The bottom of the hands are prone to much more use, and that means the bottom side of a hand tattoo could likely fade away. This could take weeks or years, but it is very probable. Your tattoo artist should explain this, and you should be prepared to agree to the risks associated with a hand tattoo.

4. Design Ideas

Because a less detailed ring finger tattoo will produce the best result, you may just opt for a simple black band. If that doesn't offer enough style, you can add filigree and small scrolls that are both romantic and old world inspired. Celtic knot tattoos make beautiful expressions of love. You could also add a small cross in the center of a band if faith is a firm presence in your union.

5. Bad Luck or Blessing?

While it has been said name tattoos and wedding bands are a prelude to break-up and serve as bad luck, you don't have to hold steadfast to those beliefs. If a wedding ring finger tattoo makes sense because of an inability to wear jewelry, or because your commitment feels more meaningful when it's permanent, then do it. Just make sure you find a skilled artist, view their portfolio and consider the risks. And you'll likely need a few tattoos, as most artists will not work on the hands as a first tattoo. Even for lovers.
