Why People Get Tattoos
Feb 28th 2013, 11:17

Most of my articles are for either fans of body art or professionals in the business. This one is for the skeptic that just doesn't understand our love for living art. I even have a good friend who, after telling him of my latest tattoo asked, "Girl, why do you do that to yourself?" My reason is simple. I love art - of all kinds. When I discovered body art I thought it was the most exotic and beautiful medium I had ever seen. I get my tattoos based around things I love: fairies, butterflies, dragons and flowers for the most part. Being one who is actually learning to get into the business of tattooing, my tattoos are special not only for the designs, but also for who put them on me. My intentions are to get tattoos from artists around the world that I admire and respect.

I'm not the only one who has sentimental feelings about my tattoos! Most of us who are true fans of tattoo art put a lot of thought into the art we get. I recently received a letter from one of my fellow guides here at About that was such a prime example of this, I just had to share it with you.

Dawn Marie, our guide to 80's Music, got the above custom tattoo from Steve C. at Electric Dragonland in Hopkins, Minnesota. Here are her reasons for the design she chose:

The Cross: A symbol of her Catholic faith. She says, "Somehow bearing a cross on my spine seemed appropriate."
The nine stars: Represent the Nine of Pentacles, which is "the tarot card of fruition and seeking and obtaining goals, being disciplined and relying on yourself".
The heart: Symbol of love - self-explanatory, but meaningful nonetheless.
Zodiac Symbol: Aries, her astrological sign.
Yours, Yours, Yours: These words inside the ribbon is the title of her favorite Adam Ant song, music from the 80's, of course!
DMarie: Her nickname.

This tattoo is one that is a collection of significant and meaningful things in Dawn Marie's life, and she will always hold them dear. Now, she is able to display this devotion on her skin for all to see. By understanding Dawn's tattoo, you begin to understand Dawn herself. This one tattoo tells a story about her and her life without any words at all.

This may not have all been apparent at a first glance. Some tattoos have meanings that you will never know by just looking at them. Instead of judging the wearer of such a piece of art, ask them why they chose the design they did. You just might come to respect their reasons and have a new appreciation for the art as a whole.

If you happen to be the collector that just walked into a tattoo shop and picked something off the wall without any thought at all as to what you were doing, Dawn is a good example you should follow. Tattoos are forever, and if you don't get something close and dear to your heart, you will end up regretting it in the future. Take your time to think about what really inspires you and get your tattoos based on these things. You, also, will gain a new appreciation for the art you wear.

How to Fix the World's Worst Tattoo
Feb 28th 2013, 11:17

It happens. You may have made a tattoo mistake, or perhaps your artist wasn't up to par. Maybe your tattoo design was thoughtless, the application poor, or the placement just a bad idea.

What can you do when you are left with the world's worst tattoo? Don't worry, you have a few options. While none of the following ideas are inexpensive, they are all worthy of consideration.

Laugh it Off

It's not ideal, in fact it downright sucks, but finding humor in a bad tattoo might be your only option if it can't be fixed due to limited options or funds. Should that be the case, you may just need to accept it.

Cover it Up

If possible, seek out the advice of a specialized tattoo cover-up artist. Many tattooists make their name in their ability to remaster old and poor designs.

After fixing the Internet-made-famous tattoo design that went viral, Scott Versago has achieved international recognition for redesigning a bad portrait tattoo at Empire Ink in Akron, Ohio.

Now Scott can add portrait redesign specialist to his work, as well as good Samaritan. After hearing the story of a man who lost his wife in a house fire, and then went on to honor her, only with what turned into a terrible black and grey portrait design, Scott donated his time, skill and creativity and did the tattoo redesign for free.

To book an appointment with Scott Versago of Empire Ink, contact the studio here or visit them on Facebook :

Empire Ink

(330)928-9833

335 East Cuyahoga Falls Ave, Akron, OH.

For other specialty artists who focus on redesign, check the portfolios of artists in your area by visiting local tattoo shops. Once you find a promising artist, you can save money until you can afford the tattoo cover-up. Don't expect anyone to take pity on your bad tattoo, artists will expect payment for the services rendered.

Tattoo Removal

Last, and the most expensive option for fixing the world's worst tattoo,is to opt for laser or other tattoo removal services. While intense Pulse Light Technology, also known as IPL, is targeted as an option for tattoo removal, specialist's advice against it, and it's quite costly when compared to the more painful yet effective laser tattoo removal method. Besides cost prohibiting many people from seeking laser tattoo removal, the procedure is also deemed very painful, more than getting a tattoo.

Portrait Tattoo Warnings

No matter the tattoo, always make sure spelling of names and words are correct, and that the symbols you choose represent what you actually intend. In addition, be very careful with portrait tattoo work. Spend time looking at artist portfolios and pay attention to fine details. An artist who specalizes in realism tattoos should be your first stop if you want a realistic portrait tattoo. Since most portraits are of a sensitive nature, this step is crucial in ensuring you like your tattoo and that it bears significant resemblance.

Benefits of Fixing the World's Worst Tattoo

Fixing the world's worst tattoo will have many benefits, first being an instant boost in your self-esteem. Once you've removed an embarassing tattoo design, you can begin to dress in ways that no longer aims to cover up your body and mistake. You'll also feel more confident if you have a design you can be proud of. Before you cover-up or modify a bad design, make sure your new tattoo bears some worthy significance and you'll be even happier with the end result, even if it is the second time around. After all, experience can always make you wiser.

Fairy Clipart for Tattoo Ideas
Feb 27th 2013, 11:17

Fairies (faeries) are another highly popular tattoo subject. They are probably a more sought-after design for women than men, but seeing as how the number of women being tattooed is steadily increasing, it warrants some discussion.

Fairies have different meanings for different people, just as with any other type of art. The nature of the fantasy, and the fact that many of us grew up on tales of small fairies doing great things, brings a certain amount of nostalgia to many of us. The desire to fly and have magical powers appeals to others. Maybe it is just their unabashed beauty, their closeness to nature, or their virgin-like purity. Whatever the reason may be, fairies and fairy art are seen more and more, making the decision when looking for a tattoo even more difficult.

In this feature, I am going to highlight some of the best websites I have found on fairy art. Going through all the lovely pictures and making a choice for a tattoo is still your job, but I hope you have as much fun browsing as I have! (Please Note: Some of the images may be copyrighted - please be respectful of copyright laws.)

Fairy Art by Various Artists
This is a private collection of fairy art done by various artists. These paintings and pictures display some popular fairies you may have already seen and are in high-demand by fairy lovers everywhere.

Mythical Menagerie
Be aware - there is music on these pages and the graphics load slowly. Despite that, this page deserves high praise for it's huge fairy gallery, featuring many different sizes, styles and artists.

Amy Brown Fantasy Art
Last, but certainly not least, is the works of Amy Brown. This site is actually a commercial site where Amy is displaying and selling these beautiful works of art. You can certainly get inspirational ideas here, but if you're not ready for the permanent version yet, you can take one of these lovelies home to display on your wall instead.

Aside from websites, there are also many, many books featuring even more fairies by the wonderful artists you will come to know with the above sites, such as books written by Brian Froud as listed at World of Froud. Check your local library and also check out some of the suggestions on the message boards.

Breaking the Stereotype
Feb 26th 2013, 11:16

Many "minority" groups have long complained about being judged solely on their appearance. People of these groups are automatically stereotyped into a class of certain expectations. The body art community is no exception. From schools to the work force to every day life, people with body art are generally perceived as rebellious, irresponsible, unintelligent and sometimes even criminal.

This kind of prejudice is no more acceptable than judging a person based on the color of their skin, their religion, or their gender. However, it does happen and those with body art are inspected under a close microscope of scrutiny. How we, as members of this community, react to the scrutiny is what will make the difference.

Gaining Trust
We learn from childhood that trust is something that must be earned. We were also taught that losing someone's trust is much easier than gaining it. Tattooed and pierced gang members and criminals have caused the general population to lose much of its trust for the illustrated people. It is also no surprise that humans tend to be wary of anything that is different from what they are accustomed to.

We are quick to admonish that these people need to change their attitudes, but we need to realize that we are responsible for bringing about this change. A child does not overcome their fear of dogs by being thrust into a cage of angry canines.

Cut the Attitude
I hear myself saying this to my kids a lot. "Cut the attitude." What does it mean? It means get the scowl off your face and stop acting like you're the most important person in the world. No wonder "mundanes" ("blanks" - people without bodyart) are afraid of us - if you walk around looking, acting and talking like a punk, you're going to be perceived as a punk.

We all know you're pierced and tattooed as a form of your self-expression. That doesn't mean you have to be angry at the world. There is obviously a side of you that appreciates creativity and art; nurture that side and stop always being on the defensive. Don't assume every person you meet is going to judge you, and don't assume you're better than them if they do.

Above & Beyond
Maybe you're not the angry type that walks around with a chip on your shoulder, but do you go out of your way to break the stereotype? This is something I personally am conscious of every day, especially when my body art is clearly visible. One time I moved a shopping cart out of the way of a lady that was trying to park her car. Another time I held a door open for an elderly man with a walker. Recently I returned a wallet that was left behind by the owner. These are not extraordinary things, but the look of pleasant surprise on the faces of these individuals proves to me that it made an impression. I did exactly the opposite of what was expected of me, and I earned a point of respect for the body art community.

The Power of a Smile
The simplest thing you can do everywhere you go and to everyone you meet is share a smile. It's really contagious - if you give someone a genuine smile, they are going to smile back. Dogs that walk around with their tails wagging and their tongues hanging out aren't scary. And a person walking around with a big smile on their face isn't going to pose any threat to strangers.

Random Acts of Kindness
There used to be a television show where the hosts would go out to commit "random acts of senseless kindness". They would go out of their way to help someone or just make them smile. For someone who is not outgoing in nature, this isn't easy, but the benefits to yourself and the people you reach will be immeasurable.

I would like for everyone that reads this article to try to go out of their way for just one individual this week, and remember to do it with a smile! Then, email me about it at tattoo@aboutguide.com. What did you do? What was their reaction? How did it make you feel? Do you think this could help change the world's perspective on body art, and would you do it again? Your experiences and reactions will be published in a future article for all to read. Good luck!

Tattoos Over 40
Feb 26th 2013, 11:16

I was 53 when I got my first one and will celebrate my 61st birthday with #4.

Each one has a special meaning to me and are in places that are not visible to everyone because they are a very personal thing to me. I am also a wedding and event planner and I'm not sure what my clients would think about this old grandma with tattoos. When my oldest daughter found out I had a tat she was furious, not because I had one but because I didn't tell her! Funny how that works.

I have never been sorry I have my body art and in fact my birthday tattoo will be the logo of the hotel I work at in Baja Mexico and my boss is paying for it. I love the La Fonda Hotel and Spa where I work so it is only fitting that I have it forever imprinted on my body. If you are interested in seeing my body art I will gladly send pictures because I am very proud of them.

Some will ask why I even bothered to get one at 53. Well that's an easy one. Because I could, besides that if I got one when I was 20 it would probably not look to good now but when I die my tattoo's will still look really good.

Nipple Piercing Facts and Care
Feb 25th 2013, 11:16

About Nipple Piercings

Once you get your nipple pierced, you'll need to practice proper nipple piercing aftercare to ensure your new modification heals as quickly and as comfortably as possible.

What is a Nipple Piercing?

Since the middle of the 1890's nipple piercing has been worn to enhance sexual arousal and provide constant stimulation, thus enlarging the size and attractiveness of the nipples.

While women primarily started wearing "Bosom Rings", in the 1890's, it's been rumored that Roman Centurions wore nipple jewelry under their leather breast plates long before to show off their bravery and fearlessness.

"Bosom Rings" worn by Victorian women were considered highly suggestive and erotic. Upper-class society women had both of their nipples pierced and then connected them with a dainty chain that spilled out from their low cut dresses and blouses.

While pierced nipples fell in and out of fashion ever since the Victorian era, they've never gone away. Worn by tribal members, different cultures, and by men and women alike, a nipple piercing holds universal and unisex appeal.

Today, nipple piercing is considered one of the most erotic and sexy forms of body piercings. It's a rather quick and easy piercing procedure, and several different jewelry styles can be worn to change the style and appearance of the piercing once it is fully healed, thus increasing the versatility and attractiveness of this body modification.

Where to Get a Nipple Piercing

Like all forms of body piercing, it is pertinent that you go to a professional body piercer for your nipple piercing, especially if you have special conditions such as flat or inverted nipples. These conditions may make a nipple piercing unfit for your anatomy. If for any reason a nipple piercing can not be performed, a professional and experienced piercer will be able to suggest a solution or alternative body placement before you experience a botched or misplaced piercing.

Some people are uncomfortable bearing their breasts for a body piercer despite the desire of having pierced nipples. If you find yourself in this spot, rest assured. Your body piercer has seen unmentionable body parts and won't even blink. If it helps, try to find a same sex body piercer and that may put you at ease.

Nipple Piercing Aftercare

Once your nipples are pierced, you can expect about a 6-8 week healing period at minimum. Depending on how active you are, your nipples may take longer to heal from accidental touching or rubbing during daily activity.

Larger breasts may experience a longer healing period since they're more likely to bump or experience friction during normal activity. Men and women with smaller breasts may find they have a much faster healing time than those who are more endowed.

Once your nipples are fully healed you can have fun changing your body jewelry styles. Remember, a piercing can close quickly. Once you remove your body jewelry the clock begins to tick. Within 24 hours a piercing can close, so reinsert your jewelry quickly or be prepared to re-pierce, this time through scar tissue, which may provide a bit more of a challenge.

Tattoos Over 40 - First Time Ink Experiences From Mature Adults Collector: Roger

I received my first and only tattoo last September on my 48th birthday. My 53 year old sister got it for me. She had told me several years back that if I ever found the pattern that she would get it for me. I went back to Indiana to visit with my pattern in hand. I returned to California with a platypus on my shin. I have loved the platypus since I was 10 years old. I know I'll never get tired of it.

The following Reader submitted story is being published for the sole purpose of providing experience and advice in relation to body piercing and modification. Please be advised the content is inappropriate for minors. Thank you.

***MATURE ADULT CONTENT****

There is a lot written about the G spot and how hard it is to find and assist your woman to orgasm.

Some time back my ex wife became very friendly with another woman. A friend, the usual one suggested that there was more to the friendship than that and that in that small town the lesbians were having their nipples, and some of them their clit hoods or even clits pierced.

I went away on business for about 10 days and returning advised my ex wife of the eta. I was told by her that she had had a surprise for me. She met me at the front door in the nude with rings in her nipples , a shaven clit and a hint of sliver down there and informed me that shortly after my departure she and her friend had had the piercings.

Initially the clit ring worked wonders and so did the nipple rings. At her suggestion I had a PA done and sex was better than before, but the friend was too great an attraction and we divorced.

I had a few other experiences but the orgasms did not come. I began thinking about the situation and the positioning of the clitoris as against the penis. I then went to my piercer and asked if it was possible to place a bead under the skin on top of my penis which would touch upon the clit.

To cut a long story short we did and now I have the most dramatic orgasms from any woman I have sex with.

Initially, they are intrigued by the PA with a lot of don't think that you are entering me with that. However, once I am in and sitting there the clit itself takes over and they start gripping and releasing and then riding and then in no time coming, as never before.

If you really care for your women you'll have the 'pearling' done. I have had one but think that a whole ridge of them down the shaft of the penis will do more than one only.

It's your choice but the logic is irrefutable.

Lord of the Rings Style Wizard and Fire Tattoo Design Meaning
Feb 22nd 2013, 09:37

lrings

Today I decided to do a little investigative work and found a random visitor queried the following in my internal search results:

What does a wizard tattoo with a ring of fire around it mean?

I decided to research this and even though my visitor did not submit a formal question, I'm hoping they'll return and see this magical post written just for them.

If you would like your future tattoo ideas analyzed, please submit them to Jodie @ tattoo@aboutguide.com.

Here we go:

Wizard and Wiccan theme tattoos have soared in popularity thanks to the epic written works of J.R.R. Tolkien with Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and author J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter.

Wizard tattoos can bear many meanings. They can serve to offer protection and liken you to a greater force. If you are Wiccan, a wizard tattoo is fitting for your beliefs and practices even though witches have slightly different backgrounds than the mythological wizard. Depending on the powers of the wizard, he may ward off evil spirits or serve up some much needed wisdom.

Consider tattoo placement when you opt for a wizard tattoo. The larger the area the better story to be told, so save some space and try to place your tattoo where you can add lots of imagery and fine details. Fantasy and wizard tattoos are often combined with other magical elements. From star tattoos, to the moon and blazen rings of fire, wizard tattoos usually have a fantastical style about them.

Wizards rely on several different elements to strengthen their powers. For some it may be the earth or water, others may rely on flame.

In magic, fire often represents energy and it is cast with the same purpose of the spell. A ring encircling a wizard could depict their magical force and mysterious powers.

In many tattoo designs, a ring of fire around a wizard just looks cool.

Don't you think?

Conventional Piercing Guide
Ear - Tragus & Anti-Tragus

Tragus

The tragus is a thick layer of cartilage just below the rook. Like the rook, some will be easier to pierce if the tragus is more pronounced. In those with a small tragus, it can be more difficult to pierce.

Some people report hearing a "pop" sound in their ear during the procedure, although this is not always the case. This sound can startle you, so be prepared and try to relax.

Recommended Starter Jewelry: 16-12 gauge CBR or mini curved barbell

Estimated Healing Time: 2-12 months

Anti-Tragus

The prefix "anti-" is used with piercing to describe a pierce that is located across from the original piercing bearing its name. For example, the anti-tragus is opposite the tragus.
