Conventional Piercing Guide - Ear - Daith
Jun 30th 2012, 11:02

Conventional Piercing Guide
Ear - Daith

The daith is located just above the tragus, and the piercings are very similar. It is a piercing through a rather thick section of cartilage, which does make the piercing itself appear to be more dramatic. But the fact is, there is minimal pain with these piercings, and the aesthetic reward is certainly worth any discomfort.

The healing process can be a bit longer and more complicated than most other piercings. The daith tends to be a magnet for dirt and germs that are around us. And it also requires more attention simply because it is a larger wound than a thin cartilage piercing. It is imperative that you keep it clean and strictly follow your aftercare instructions.

Recommended Starter Jewelry: 16-12 gauge SSS or Titanium CBR or small Curved Barbell

Estimated Healing Time: 2 - 12 months

top 5 tribal
Jun 30th 2012, 11:02

Make a cultured decision before you ink one of the top 5 tribal design tattoos and styles. Tribal tattoos and their traditional rituals hail from many different cultures throughout the world. Dating back centuries, tribal tattooing can signify one's rank, wealth, symbolism and heritage.

In some tribes, the practice of tattooing involves spiritual rituals complete with scarification techniques. Other tribes use tattooing as a barrier of protection and use symbolism to ward off evil spirits or curses.

While modern tattoo machines make the art of inking tribal designs an easier and less painful quest, tribal tattooing will never bear the same meaning or significance without the trained hand of a knowledgeable artist who understands both the culture and symbolism of the tribe. For an authentic tribal tattoo you may need to travel to distant lands to a master in the art. Ritual tattoo practices may include chants and prayer and should be followed in the most traditional form. Be forewarned, without being part of the tribe many artists will rightfully refuse service.

Make sure you understand design symbolism before inking your body and pay respect to the cultures and their artful practices while planning a tribal tattoo design.

1. Maori

Image Cc micaeltattoo@Flickr
The native tribe of New Zealand is known as the Maori. Maori practice the ancient craft of Ta Moko; chiseling geometric spikes and spirals into the skin with an albatross bone to tell an individual story of geneaology. Worn with great pride, moko graces the faces of men and usually the lips or chins of women. Take heed, unless you're part of the pack, wearing moko is offensive to the native tribe. French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier caused a controversial stir on the runway when his models wore moko. Kirituhi is an acceptable form of Maori-style designs that bears no tribal meaning. If you must ink a Maori tribal-inspired tattoo, Kirituhi is the only sensitive and respectful way to do it.

2. Polynesia

Image CC my_tat2's@Flcikr

Tahitian, Tonga, Hawaiian and Samoan designs comprise the group of Polynesian island tattoos. Most all Polynesian tattoos include geometric patterns, lines and solid bands of black. Warrior spirited designs make up many Tahitian tattoos while Samoan tattoos were a necessary step for a boy to reach manhood. It's not uncommon for geometric designs to extend throughout the lower half of their bodies. A popular vacation destination, many people ink Polynesian-inspired native tribal symbols to show appreciation and love for the islands.

3. Borneo

Image CC Tajai@Flickr
If you want to connect deeper with nature you may consider one of the top 5 tribal design tattoos known as Borneo. Centuries old, Borneo tattoos are inspired by the Dayak people whom encompass the Kayan, Iban and Kenyah tribes. Borneo tribal tattoos were created from organic wood-block carved designs and became passed around throughout the tribes to depict the travels of the inked. Style ideas include intricate rosettes, insects and animals. Some tattoo designs even serve as a guide into the afterlife. Borneo tribal tattoos should be placed carefully on the body according to spiritual significance.

4. Haida

Image Cc Vectorportal@Flickr

Abound with a colorful burst of red, black and white ink, Haida tattoo designs celebrate the totem animals and spirit of the Pacific Northwest tribe. Folkloric in style, the raven and eagle are the most important Haida totem animals as the eagle is believed to have taken form from the great spirit, Ne-Kilst-Lass, while the symbolic raven is believed to have created the world. Many other Haida designs include totem trademarks such as the killer whale, thunderbird and bear. Haida tribal tattoos are commonly inked on the shoulders, chest and forearms.

5. Native American

Image CC ta sitch@Flickr
For the western spirit, A Native American tattoo pays tribute to the great plains and the natives. Dreamcatchers, shields, tomahawks, wolves, animal skulls and protective feathers are just some of the many tribal designs that can be inked to honor American mythology and heritage. As with all cultures, make sure you research Native American history thoroughly and pay careful respect to the heritage and beliefs of the people when selecting any of these top 5 tribal design tattoos.

Clavicle Piercings
Jun 30th 2012, 11:02

Definition: Clavicle piercings are named after their anatomical location, but are also often referred to as a Madison. A Madison is a surface piercing that, while attractive, is often temporary because it comes with a very high chance of rejection. The name comes from the first well-known person to wear this piercing - adult film starlet, Madison Stone(who now owns her own tattoo shop in California). It's positioned right above the sternum in the area known as the "jugular notch."

I'm not sure why clavicle piercings have such a high rejection rate; maybe it's because of the body's natural movement in this area and/or the flexibility of the skin. For whatever reason, very few of them ever heal completely. Even Madison Stone herself lost the piercing many years ago, and hasn't bothered to have it pierced again.

A "true" Madison is horizontal, adorned with a small curved barbell, surface bar, CBR, or circular barbell. However, anything but a surface bar puts more tension on the ends of the fistula, giving it an even greater chance at rejection. Directional variations, such as a vertical Madison, can also be done and may actually reduce the odds of rejection, especially if it's pierced by an experienced surface piercing artist and uses a surface bar for jewelry. If you want the best odds at not losing your Madison, that's what I'd recommend.

Healing time for this particular piercing can take months, or it may never heal at all. Pay close attention to your aftercare instructions and cross your fingers. Do not hang anything from your piercing; not even small charms. If you're one of the lucky few, you might get to keep your Madison for many years. If not, at least you can enjoy it for a while.

Also Known As: Madison, Jugular Notch Piercing

Addicted to Miley Cyrus Tattoos
Jun 29th 2012, 16:56

Are tattoos addictive? Just ask one serious Miley Cyrus fan if he thinks so.

A man who Twitter's under the name MileyCyrusCarl has adorned his body with over 15 tattoos ode to the pop sensation and he's confessed he's even planning more.

Here's the lowdown on this tattooed fan: He has one bicep portrait of Miley, her name inked across his forearm and her signature across his hands. On his clavicle and other parts he has more Miley name tattoos (in case he forgets?)

The sealer of the tattoo deal that I feel says it all is the word "OBSESSED" that's been tattooed across his arm. Obviously that seems to bear plenty of significance.

If I were Miley, I might even consider changing my name.

Thoughts?

Zodiac Cancer Tattoos
Jun 29th 2012, 11:01

Loyal to Hera the Greek goddess of women and marriage, Cancer zodiac tattoos can range from the traditional glyph symbol to stargazing pieces of art.

Zodiac tattoos are a good choice if their representation and traits are of value to you. Many people embrace their association to the stars and planets and choose a tattoo symbol that proclaims their astrologocal sign.

The Charming Crab

Those born between June 21st/22nd-July 22nd are Cancers, the fourth sign of the zodiac.

Nurturing, sensitive, imaginative, kind and loyal, Cancer the Crab is a mysterious and moody sign that is connected on an intuitive level, making them companions of great compassion. Getting them out of their shell can prove the most difficult and their dark moods may have you wondering at times whether they seek friendship or solitude.

Rest assured it is only the moon, as the watery sign is controlled by the gravitational pull of their planetary sign and they feel the constant changes pulling them in all sorts of directions. The Cancer sign is both blessed and cursed in which they feel all emotions deeply.

These intense energies make dark moods and emotional outbursts inevitable, but as the moon changes phase the Crab slowly calms and is once again at peace. Cancers are a family-oriented sign, usually sensual and incurable romantics. For these reasons they make some of the best lovers of the zodiac.

Some famous Cancerians include the late Princess Diana, Tom Cruise, Liv Tyler, Sylvester Stallone, Courtney Love, Bill Cosby, Robin Williams, Meryl Streep, Harrison Ford and Tom Hanks.

Cancer Tattoo Ideas

Cancer Glyph The Cancerian crab glyph is often represented with two claws interlacing one another forming a 69 figure. This simple symbol looks well-placed on the inner wrist and works as a timeless unisex tattoo. Zodiac symbol tattoos also work on the bicep and the back of the neck where longer hair can keep ink hidden if need be.

Moon Designs Of course Cancer the Crab should rightfully have a moon tattoo as it is the ruling planet for this moody zodiac sign.

To display Cancer's ever-changing gravitational pull, the moon phases make a unique choice for a tattoo. Add stars and capture a night scene for a more fantastical tattoo design. A full moon can also be a clever choice for the moody Cancer who has a dark side. Or, opt for a simple collarbone tattoo in a crescent shape for a design that is symbolic yet easily disguised.

Sea Inspired Put that crab back in the water! Cancer tattoos can also depict the water element of their zodiac sign. Consider small fluid waves on your foot or anywhere they mimic your body's natural curvature, such as your ribcage.

Cancerian colors are blue and silver so consider using those in a sea or nautical inspired tattoos. Ships, anchors and Old School pin-up girls make likely choices for this creature of the sea.

Star Gazing The Crab's constellation is small, dark and faint, often being called the Dark Star of the zodiac.

Alluding to its high position and faint light by Dante in Paradiso, you can capture the darker side of your personality and have your tattoo artist ink the trail of Praesepe, a cluster of about 50 stars that make up Cancer the Crab exactly 577 light-years away from where you're standing. Then, to capture the romantic and sentimental side of your sign, be sure to include a poetic or inspired verse such as "I love you to the moon and back" amongst your stars.

Henna Designs
Jun 28th 2012, 11:04

An ancient form of body adornment, henna designs have many significant meanings.

While the art of henna tattooing is a cultural practice that dates back over 5,000 years, henna tattooing today is used as a popular form of expression for luck and happiness and can be found in many ceremonial practices, including Blessingways, marriages, births and battle.

Most all Henna artists will suggest that the practice of Mehndi is freehand and intuitive. Applying henna can be a deeply moving and communicative experience for both the bearer and the artist and opens a spiritual connection where a gifted blessing can be received.

Traditional Henna Placement

While henna designs can be applied nearly anywhere on the body, certain locations have special meaning and significance.

Henna that is placed on the palms of the hand allow the bearer to receive and offer blessings. Popular henna deigns for the palms include mandalas, sun and flower images.

Henna placed on the top of the hands can be suggestive of protection and often includes shield designs.

For men, the right hand is considered projective whereas the right hand is receptive and represents women. The feet are truly a spiritual place to henna, as they connect the body, mind and spirit with the earth.

Popular Henna Design Meanings

1. Sahasara: This ancient symbol unites the soul with a divine sense of force.

2. Peacock: The proud peacock symbolizes beauty.

3. Swans: Symbolize success and beauty.

4. Birds:Birds serve as the messengers between heaven and earth.

5. Dragonflies and butterflies: Symbolize change and rebirth.

6. Paisley designs:Intricate and scrolling paisleys can represent fertility and luck.

7. Flowers: Flowers and petals symbolize pure happiness and joy.

8. Vines and leaves: Vines and leaf henna designs often represent devotion and vitality and are perfect for marriage celebrations.

9. Eye: Ancient eyes in Mehndi art often represent the reflection of the evil eye, turning any evil wishes back onto the gazer while offering a spiritual form of protection. Popular for weddings or any other of life's journeys, a Mehndi eye is a comforting companion.

10. Snakes and lizards:Reptiles are often considered the seekers of enlightenment in henna practices.

Mehndi Celebrations

The art of Mehndi can be a very open and relaxing experience for the artist. Known as "henna sessions", some artists spend days depicting their blessings and wishes onto the skin in a time-honored tradition.

For Hindu brides, henna is applied during a Mehndi Rat session, where the bride-to-be is told all the secrets of a happy marriage and home by her surrounding female family and friends.

In Moroccan celebrations. henna is applied on both men and women in many forms of talismans for luck and protection. Moroccan celebrations can last for days and usually include food, dancing and music as the art is applied liberally on bodies to offer protection.

Learn the Craft

The best way to master the art of henna is to practice and learn the significance of the patterns and symbols traditionally used in Mehndi. Once you've learned a few basic sets you can practice the art on family and friends and perhaps even host your own celebration to share the gift of this ancient art.

Rook Piercings
Jun 25th 2012, 11:01

Definition: Rook piercings are located along the inner ridge of ear cartilage that runs down the center, parallel to the helix or outer rim. A piercing along the upper crux of this cartilage is called a Rook. It's basically two steps above your Tragus, with the Daith in between.

How well your rook piercings will go can depend on the anatomy of your ear. Some people have a very pronounced ridge of cartilage, which is easier to pierce but requires slicing through a larger amount of flesh. Smaller ridges don't have as much cartilage to pierce through, but can be more difficult for the piercer to get at. Either way, it's still a relatively simple procedure to an experienced, professional piercer.

All cartilage piercings share the same basic risks and aftercare mishaps. It's important that you follow your aftercare instructions carefully, and act quickly if you start developing any signs of infection. Avoid contact with makeup, perfume, hairspray and other irritants; change your pillowcase daily and cleanse your ear after using the telephone, earphones, earmuffs, etc.

Your piercer will need to determine what gauge is best depending on the prominence of your cartilage ridge. Proper sizing is very important for successful healing. As far as jewelry styles go, your choices are a CBR, mini curved barbell, or circular barbell.

If everything goes right, your cartilage should heal up in 4-6 weeks, but most people experience at least a couple hiccups along the way, which slows things down. Cartilage piercings are tricky, so they usually take 3-6 months to finally get a handle on.

The Tattoo Machine Does Not Make the Artist
Jun 25th 2012, 05:37

tatto artist Life is full of extremes. Good to bad, bad to worse, worse to, well you get the idea.

If you haven't checked out the poll about at-home tattooing, now is your chance to take a look at two extremes and cast your vote.

Tattoo machines are readily available for purchase by anyone and that's a pretty scary thought. No matter how easy the craft of tattooing may look, it really does take artistic talent and skill to operate a machine.

For example, take a peek at Synyster Ink's Facebook page where a Wisconsin "tattoo artist" is inking from what appears to be his own home under the same name and see for yourself what many, if not most at-home tattoos look like.

Then go ahead and vote on my poll located here in regards to the young at-home tattooer I ran into whom created quite a large display of well-placed designs on his partner with no intent to ever become a professional or practicing artist.

The differences are extreme.

For further reading, check out my tips for finding a professional and talented tattooist right here.

Remember folks, tattoos are permanent. Machines do not make the artist.

Young Love and Trusting Your Partner to Leave Their Mark: VOTE!
Jun 23rd 2012, 18:19

koi Every now and then you just have to take a leap of faith. My latest encounter with a young couple made me realize just that.

After looking at her collection of well-placed and artsy tattoos, I made a mention to her about them.

Turns out this pretty gal had a boyfriend responsible for all her ink, and he's no tattoo artist nor does he ever plan to be. He's artful and she bought him a tattoo machine just for kicks.

Together they have started a little journey of love onto their skins, having just inked matching Chinese "forever" symbols. Oh yes she took the machine to him too.

Young love can be sweet and painful, but is there such thing as regret?

Let's take a leap of faith and vote...

Hood Piercing Leads to Romance
Jun 23rd 2012, 11:01

The aftercare is relatively simple--Tyler made sure he went over everything with me and gave me a pamphlet to follow. I wash it thoroughly with Dial soap 2x a day, soak it warm water and sea salt 2x a day to draw out any infection, and keep my hands away from it (as well as anyone else's!). That last part is the hardest! I just want to look and touch it all day!

Its healing nicely and isn't sore at all. There has been no crusting or swelling. And Tyler did a great job, as he explained when he was done..."the ball will rest nicely on your clit, so you'll get some sensation from it," as if he knew! I really enjoy walking more now, to say the least!!!

All in all, I think this piercing was the best birthday present I could ever have given myself. And I am fortunate that my new friend was experienced with piercings and that NY Adorned was where I had it done. Tyler was EXCELLENT! I was so pleased that I gave him $20 tip, to which he said, "Aww, you are so sweet." Man, what a cutie.

So, if you are considering such a piercing, I highly recommend it, and I am not into piercings, tattoos, etc., in general. So, if you are in the NYC area, you should check out www.nyadorned.com -- good luck!!!

-Victoria

Reader Question: Victorian Cameo Jewelry Tattoo Placement
Jun 22nd 2012, 20:16

cameo If there's such a thing as a romantic and ladylike tattoo, a cameo design is just that. I've opened a box of reader questions with my latest Cameo Tattoo article and now I'm serving up my response with some serious Southern charm. My latest reader needs more design and placement inspiration for a cameo tattoo.

QUESTION

I know I've wrote you before but your my go to guide for tattoos.

I still like the idea of getting a collarbone tattoo (thanks to 5 Sexy Spots for Girls) and now my new favorite idea comes from the Cameo Tattoos article. My question is how do you put a cameo on the collarbone? How big should it be? No matter where I get my tattoo I want it hidden, for no one but me.

Still haven't decided on color leaning towards no color.I have time to narrow it all down and decide and am open to any ideas you have on this subject.

ANSWER

First I say thank you for being a loyal reader. I love to hear that you're excited about the new direction of the site. Feedback is important and invaluable and of course in its truest form when it comes from you, the reader.

You want to talk jewelry tattoos? You got it.

I love your idea of a cameo and agree keeping it small in scale is the only way to capture the demure look that you're after. However, detail is so important with a cameo and you're going to sacrifice too much if you opt for such a tiny size. I would recommend a different placement for your cameo if you want to keep it hidden. Perhaps an upper/outer thigh would make a sultry choice?

I stopped by Sara Mae's Southern Hospitality Tattoos shop in Round Rock, Texas and asked for help with your cameo tattoo concerns.

Sara loves Victorian inspired tattoo art and has her own drafting table right aside her framed paintings and antique collection of China pieces.

First I might suggest you take a flight down South and meet Sara yourself since she seems perfect for the job. But in the event that can't be done I brought some of Sara's Southern charm to you.

Sara recommends your cameo be no smaller than 4 inches in diameter to best display the intricate details of the piece. For colors, Sara recommends black and pink, gray and pink, or even the beautiful purple and black combination depicted in her own work above.

Sara will not work in white ink and does not recommend lighter colors unless you have fair skin. For placement on the collarbone, go right above or below depending on your body. Your artist should help in this process from beginning to end so take your time and seek out the right artist for the job.

Jewelry tattoos offer the perfect chance to add a birthstone color or even a zodiac color element. If you're seeking a relationship tattoo this is yet another way to bear significance to your loved ones without inking names.

The collarbone area is noted to be sensitive but personal experience always varies. Your tattoo artist will help you find the meatiest part of your body and hopefully you can entrust their judgment and recommendation. If not, go somewhere else.

Feel free to come back with questions or comments anytime and thanks for writing. I hope you wear your jewelry tattoo well.

Swimming with a New Tattoo
Jun 22nd 2012, 11:15

gypsyWelcome summer. It's time for long nights and lots of memories.

If you've just been tattooed make sure you stay out of the water and the sun.

For best results allow your tattoo to heal for at least two to three weeks before exposing it to chlorine and other microscopic bacteria found in water. For even better results, you should kick it poolside in the cabana for the remainder of the year.

Movies, art, museums and libraries play host to a wonderful variety of indoor activities.

So stay inside, plan your next body art piece and give your tattoo some summer love; out of the sun. Once you venture to the great outdoors and back into the bodies of water, be sure to reapply sunblock liberally to prevent skin cancer and maintain the color and vibrancy of your tattoo.

Swimming with a new tattoo is a DON'T. Stay in the shade and cover up.

How Much Do Tattoos Cost?
Jun 22nd 2012, 11:01

Question: How Much do Tattoos Cost?

Answer: When it comes to tattoos, you get what you pay for. Yes, there are plenty of people tattooing out there that will ink you cheap, and you'll be crying to a real artist to have it covered up. Look for quality, and be willing to pay for it. NEVER haggle over the price of a tattoo. It is disrespectful to the artist. If you can't pay for quality, don't bother. This is not a bargain bin. It is a piece of art you will wear for life.

Cameo Tattoos
Jun 22nd 2012, 11:01

Cameo tattoos are an intricate choice for the true romantic. Channel the charm of a bygone era with a design that's historical and detailed.

Cameo tattoos can depict personal meaning and be drawn from exact portraits for even more sentiment.

Add jewelry to your body and keep it there. Cameos are always classy.

History of Cameos

Cameos can depict many meanings. From desire and love to honor and prestige, cameos trace 300 years B.C. in Egypt from carvings much like ancient petroglyphs. Once the popularity of seashell carving grew, cameos have come to showcase the beauty and profiles of women in a much more elegant manner.

Enchanting gods and goddesses and biblical representations have been showcased in cameo carvings. Eros, the Greek god of love created the universe with Chaos. While women once wore cameos to invite the flirtations of suitors, many infamous men have been captivated by their beauty as well.

Pope Paul II's own death was attributed to the excessive wearing of cameo jewelry. Legend believes his hands were so cold from the many stones he wore that he eventually caught the chills and suffered an untimely passing.

Napoleon was also lured by the beauty of cameos and wore a piece to his own wedding. Eventually he opened a school in Paris to teach the art of cameo carving.

Depicting Loved Ones in Cameos

Mothers, daughters and wives make obvious choices for cameo tattoo depictions. Work with an artist and scavenge up the best portrait photograph that you can find for the best result. Consider adding special details to your cameo tattoo to make it even more meaningful.

Birthstones and favorite colors can be incorporated into a cameo design for more sentimental value. Rosary beads or a strand of pearls can showcase the cameo design for a jewelry inspired tattoo. Consider ankle and wrist placement for something unique.

While many cameo pieces represent female form don't limit your ideas to just that. Mythical beasts and creatures can be drawn into cameo shapes and so can imagery such as flora and vines. Butterflies, battle scenes and enchanting forests can house finer tattoo designs such as mushrooms, helmets and military commemorative sentiments.

Placement of Cameo Tattoos

Men and women can both wear cameo tattoo designs. Bear in mind the ideal placement of your piece will depend on many different things.

Try to visualize your body canvas years down the road and perhaps any additional body art that may eventually be added. Your tattoos should work together to create an even and flowing canvas.

For this reason, cameos can be placed in areas that have natural curve for a flattering and attractive tattoo. Lower back regions and hips make sensual placement for cameo tattoos.

For a more fashionable tattoo statement, place your cameo right where you can enjoy the beauty of its detail. Collarbone and inner wrists are edgy places that suit the design of a cameo and the steampunk lifestyle well.

For men, bicep cameos can be a new spin on the traditional Old School pin-up girl designs. Or consider a back tattoo and incorporate a much larger piece. Chest pieces can also be a hot way for men to showcase the fine details of a cameo.

Add Small Details

Rather than ink your love with a name tattoo, consider a cameo for a less obvious form of devotion. Weddings dates can be inscribed upon cameos for personal meaning and lovers can choose matching cameo designs for a unique take on a couples tattoo. Timepieces can also be scribed into your design, so consider a special moment and mark it eternal in a depiction of stone, shell or marble.

Honor her true beauty and ink the silhouette of her bust and you'll have a piece of her heart forever.
